AT&T–AlienVault acquisition timeline

Date Event What was announced
July 10, 2018 Agreement announced AT&T and AlienVault said they had approved the acquisition. Financial terms were not disclosed, and closing was expected in the third quarter of 2018.
August 22, 2018 Transaction completed AT&T confirmed the acquisition had closed. AlienVault CEO Barmak Meftah became president of AT&T Cybersecurity Solutions and CEO of AlienVault.

Why did AT&T buy AlienVault?

AT&T wanted to combine AlienVault’s threat intelligence and detection technology with its own security portfolio. AT&T described the deal as a way to connect threat detection, prevention, response, remediation, managed-security services, and network visibility.

The strategy also addressed a customer-size gap. AT&T said the combined offering could bring enterprise-grade security capabilities to millions of small and medium-sized businesses, not only to large enterprises that traditionally purchased extensive security services.

What did AT&T get from AlienVault?

Unified Security Management

AlienVault’s Unified Security Management platform provided threat detection and incident-response capabilities, along with compliance features described in AT&T’s acquisition announcements. USM was intended to consolidate security monitoring and response functions rather than require customers to assemble every capability separately.
