AT&T has acknowledged that some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones on its network may fail to connect for calls, texts, or data, and it has urged customers to install the latest iOS update. The warning includes possible failures to call 911. Reports say some customers still had service problems after installing iOS 27.0.1, and Apple’s AT&T carrier settings update 72.1 had not been confirmed as a fix as of October 2, 2026.
What AT&T said about the iPhone 18 Pro Max problem
On October 1, MacRumors reported that AT&T had texted some iPhone 18 Pro Max customers, warning that their phones might not complete calls, texts, or data connections—including calls to 911—and advising them to install iOS 27.0.1. MacRumors reported on the customer notice.
On October 2, an AT&T spokesperson told MacRumors that Apple had released a software update to address an issue that “may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls on a small number” of iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. The spokesperson advised AT&T customers with the model to install the latest available software and said AT&T was working with Apple. These are statements attributed to AT&T by MacRumors, not a separate public statement from Apple. Read MacRumors’ October 2 report.
How to check for the updates AT&T and Apple identified
Install the latest available iOS version
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
AT&T specifically advised customers to update. However, MacRumors reported that some affected users continued to have cellular problems after installing iOS 27.0.1. The reported release notes for that iOS version listed fixes for other bugs, not a specific AT&T connectivity fix. Check for AT&T carrier settings 72.1
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Wait briefly for a carrier settings update prompt, if one is available, then follow its instructions.
Apple released AT&T carrier settings version 72.1 on October 2, up from version 72.0.2. MacRumors reported the release but said it was unclear whether it resolved the service issue. A prompt may not appear if no update is available to your phone. MacRumors’ report on carrier settings 72.1 gives the reported check path.

MacRumors also reported that Apple began requiring iOS 27.0.1 during iPhone 18 Pro Max setup. That setup requirement does not demonstrate that the update resolves AT&T service failures. See the October 2 report.

What to do if calls, texts, or data still fail
- Contact AT&T or Apple for device- or account-specific help, or visit an AT&T or Apple store. The available reporting does not establish a universal repair or replacement entitlement.
- Plan for emergency contact another way. Because AT&T’s reported warning includes possible 911 call failures, do not assume emergency calling will work from an affected phone. Keep access to another working phone or another available way to contact emergency services if cellular calling is unavailable. The reported AT&T notice and AT&T’s later statement both mention the emergency-call risk.
What is known—and what remains uncertain
Reports describe intermittent or persistent trouble connecting to AT&T for calls, texts, or data; some phones may enter SOS mode. Earlier reports also mentioned complaints involving eSIM provisioning. These accounts establish that complaints exist, but they do not provide a reliable count of affected customers or show what proportion of AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max users are impacted. MacRumors’ initial report, its follow-up, and its report on user complaints do not establish an incidence rate.
The cause had not been confirmed by October 2. Reporting noted that the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Qualcomm cellular modem, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s C2 modem worldwide, as does the iPhone 18 Pro Max outside the United States. It was not established whether this hardware difference contributes to the AT&T problem; the reports do not show that a modem defect, eSIM provisioning, software, or carrier configuration is the cause. Apple had not publicly commented in the cited coverage. MacRumors’ October 1 report and its user-complaint coverage describe the unresolved questions.
