Atlas VTT turns Obsidian into a desktop virtual tabletop for organizing maps, tokens, scenes and campaign notes in one vault. The core software is free and can work offline with local files, but it is not a mobile app or a like-for-like online multiplayer replacement for hosted VTTs.

What Atlas VTT does inside Obsidian

Atlas VTT is a virtual tabletop plugin for Obsidian. Instead of keeping a campaign’s maps and notes in a separate hosted game service, it works with content stored in the Obsidian vault. The project describes Atlas as free, open and hackable, and the Obsidian Community listing says local assets work without network access.

A map image becomes a scene. You can align a square or hex grid automatically or manually, place tokens, and use fog of war. Atlas also includes dice, initiative tracking, counters, clocks, timers and game-system presets. Notes can be pinned to locations on a map and opened while you remain in the scene. If you use the optional Fantasy Statblocks plugin, creature notes can also supply tokens.

For a game master, the DM screen can keep an adventure note alongside creature statblocks. A separate player window can show the map without exposing GM information, which makes Atlas useful when players are gathered around a table with a second display.

Is Atlas VTT really free and offline?

The core plugin is free. Atlas is released under the GNU AGPL version 3, and its creator’s About page says the license permits streamed, recorded and paid games. The official description presents it as open and hackable; the Obsidian Community listing says it has no account requirement, telemetry or advertising.

Offline use applies to local vault content: maps, tokens and other assets stored in the vault can be used without a network connection. If you choose to use an external image URL, Atlas downloads that image. Submitting an issue report is another exception because it sends report data to the project endpoint. Offline does not mean every optional action is local.

Atlas stores its content in an atlas-vtt folder at the vault root. Treat it as application data: the troubleshooting guide warns against moving or renaming the folder because Atlas expects it in that location.

  2. Choose Browse, search for Atlas VTT, select it and install it.
  3. Enable Atlas in the Community plugins list.
  4. Open the command palette and run Atlas VTT: Open dashboard.

For a first session, create a collection, import a map and make a scene, place tokens, then show the map to players. Atlas’s documentation describes this as the basic setup path.

Can Atlas replace Foundry, Roll20 or Owlbear?

That depends on how you play. Atlas’s strongest fit is an in-person game where you want campaign notes and tabletop materials together in Obsidian, or a local-first setup that does not depend on a hosted service for local assets. It is not a direct substitute if you need a browser-based or mobile VTT, or if you expect online multiplayer features: the documented player view is a separate window for displaying a map, and the available information does not establish online multiplayer parity with hosted platforms.

Consideration Atlas VTT Hosted VTTs
Hosting and privacy Uses files in an Obsidian vault; local assets can work offline. The Community listing says there is no account, telemetry or advertising. Typically use accounts and hosted data; details vary by service.
Platform Obsidian desktop on Windows, macOS or Linux; Obsidian mobile is not supported. Browser and mobile availability varies by service.
Campaign integration Maps and related material live alongside Obsidian notes and Markdown links; optional Fantasy Statblocks integration can provide creature tokens. Usually organized in a separate VTT service or database.
Remote play Documents a separate player window for a second display at the table. Online multiplayer requirements are not established. Remote-play features vary by service.

Atlas is also open source under AGPL-3.0-only. That can matter if you want to inspect or adapt the software; it does not, by itself, establish feature equivalence with another VTT.

Does Atlas VTT work on mobile?

No. Atlas does not run in Obsidian’s mobile apps. Its documented support is for Obsidian 1.8.7 or newer on desktop Windows, macOS and Linux. If you need players or a game master to use a phone or tablet as the tabletop interface, Atlas is not the right fit based on its stated platform support.
