The ATI Radeon HD 4670 was a $79 mainstream graphics card announced by AMD on September 10, 2008. It brought a 320-processor, 55nm GPU, typically paired at launch with 512MB of GDDR3, to the sub-$100 market. At the time, it generally outperformed Nvidia’s GeForce 9500 GT in contemporary tests. Today it is mainly of interest for restoring or building older PCs, and the exact card’s interface, memory, outputs and condition matter more than its old benchmark reputation.

What was the ATI Radeon HD 4670?

The HD 4670 was part of AMD’s Radeon HD 4600 series, announced on September 10, 2008. AMD set its launch MSRP at $79 in the United States, positioning it in the mainstream graphics market below $100. The price was the launch MSRP, not a statement of what used or refurbished cards cost today. AMD’s September 2008 announcement gives the launch context and pricing.

Its GPU used a 55nm manufacturing process and AMD’s TeraScale architecture. Contemporary reporting described it as having 320 stream processors; ATI’s reference guide likewise lists 320 processors for the HD 4670. Those specifications explain the card’s place in its era, but they do not predict how well a specific card will work with a current operating system or game.

How fast was it compared with the GeForce 9500 GT?

In 2008 testing, AnandTech found that the HD 4670 beat the GeForce 9500 GT in many tests. Reviewer Derek Wilson also described it as competitive with the GeForce 9600 GSO in cases where it did not outperform that card. These are period comparisons, not modern benchmarks; performance depended on the game, test settings and the rest of the system. AnandTech’s 2008 review contains the contemporary assessment.

The practical takeaway is that the HD 4670 was a strong value-oriented choice at its launch price, rather than a high-end gaming card. AnandTech cautioned that buyers prioritizing gaming performance would need a more powerful GPU. No current game-performance figure follows from those historical tests.

What specifications and features did it offer?

Specifications varied by board partner and configuration, so the model name alone does not identify every card’s memory or ports. ATI’s reference guide lists GDDR3 or DDR3 memory and 512MB or 1GB configurations. Typical launch cards used 512MB of GDDR3, but buyers should verify the exact board rather than assume that specification applies to every HD 4670.

Feature What the sources establish
GPU processors 320 processors, as listed in ATI’s reference guide and described in contemporary reporting.
Memory ATI’s guide lists GDDR3 or DDR3 and 512MB or 1GB; typical launch cards used 512MB GDDR3.
Power AMD specified less than 60 watts for the HD 4670. Board implementation can differ.
API and video features GIGABYTE documented DirectX 10.1, PCI Express 2.0 and UVD 2 for its GV-R467D3-512I.
Outputs GIGABYTE’s GV-R467D3-512I has a native HDMI port. Other models may differ; check the specific card.
Multi-GPU support GIGABYTE documented CrossFireX support for the GV-R467D3-512I.

These board-specific features are documented in GIGABYTE’s GV-R467D3-512I product specifications. ATI’s period HD 4600 reference guide provides the family-level configurations. AMD’s launch material describes the card as below 60 watts; a quoted comparison in the same announcement says both the HD 4670 and GeForce 9500 GT operate around 75W. Those statements use different power descriptions, so they should not be treated as a directly comparable measurement of every retail board.

Can an HD 4670 still run a retro gaming PC?

It may suit a period-correct build or an older PC whose existing software and hardware are compatible, but the historical specifications do not establish current Windows driver support or compatibility with any particular modern game. Check the requirements of the operating system and games you intend to use, and confirm that the exact card fits the computer before buying.

Pay particular attention to the interface. Although GIGABYTE’s cited model is PCI Express 2.0, the HD 4670 name alone does not guarantee that every listing is a PCIe card: legacy variants and listings can differ. Match the card’s PCIe or AGP connection to the motherboard and confirm that its bracket and dimensions fit the case.

Which HD 4670 version should you buy?

There is no universally best version based on the GPU name alone. For example, GIGABYTE’s GV-R467D3-512I is a documented 512MB GDDR3 PCIe 2.0 model with native HDMI, but another card may have different memory, outputs, cooling or interface. Choose based on the requirements of the machine you are restoring, not an assumption that every HD 4670 has the same configuration.
