ASUS firmware was reported to add a Core Flex menu for manually configuring when a dual-CCD Ryzen 9 7900X3D or 7950X3D switches work between its two CCDs. The feature was described in February 2023 for an X670 beta BIOS; it is not a setting guaranteed to appear on every ASUS AM5 motherboard or BIOS version. To change CCD behavior, first check the support page for your exact board and confirm that its current BIOS exposes the relevant control.

What ASUS Core Flex does

Core Flex is a firmware-level control reported for dual-CCD Ryzen 9 7900X3D and 7950X3D processors. Its purpose is to let a user configure conditions for moving a task from one CCD to the other. The February 23, 2023 HotHardware report, based on screenshots shared by HXL, described possible triggers such as core current and memory activity: HotHardware’s report.

These processors have two CCDs with different strengths: one carries 3D V-Cache, while the other can reach the processor’s full turbo clock. That split can matter because cache-sensitive workloads and workloads that benefit from higher clocks may favor different CCDs. AMD had also worked with Microsoft on Windows scheduling across the two CCD types. Core Flex was described as operating in firmware and being OS/driver agnostic; that does not establish that it will improve performance in a particular workload.

Which Ryzen CPUs and BIOS versions are covered?

The reported Core Flex menu was intended for Ryzen 9 7900X3D and 7950X3D systems using an ASUS X670 beta BIOS. The report does not establish a universal BIOS version, nor does it confirm availability across all ASUS motherboards. BIOS interfaces and features vary by exact board and firmware release.

ASUS’s April 19, 2024 announcement listed updates for X670, B650 and A620 AM5 boards. It gave BIOS 2007 for several X670E ROG Crosshair and ROG Strix boards and BIOS 2613 for many TUF, PRIME and A620 models. Those are examples from that announcement, not versions required for Core Flex or a recommendation to install them now. Check the current support page for your motherboard model before updating. ASUS’s April 2024 BIOS announcement includes model-specific examples.

How to check your ASUS BIOS and configure CCD behavior

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model in BIOS, Windows System Information, or the product label. Do not select a BIOS file based only on the chipset name.
  2. Open the board’s product support page on the ASUS support site, select the BIOS and firmware section, and review the latest release notes and instructions. Download only the file for that exact model.
  3. After updating according to ASUS’s instructions, enter BIOS setup and look for a Core Flex or related CCD control. Its presence and location depend on board and BIOS implementation; the available evidence does not establish one universal menu path for Ryzen 7000X3D systems.
  4. Change only the controls you understand, save the settings, and verify the resulting processor configuration and behavior in Windows. If the system becomes unstable or the change does not help your workload, restore the prior setting or load the BIOS defaults using the board’s documented recovery procedure.

ASUS separately documents a path for disabling individual core bits: AMD Overclocking → Manual CPU Overclocking → CPU Core Count Control → CCD 01 Bit Map Down Core Control. In that example, 0 disables a core bit and 1 enables it. The procedure is illustrated with a Ryzen 9 9950X, so the option and labels may differ or be unavailable on Ryzen 7000X3D boards. See ASUS’s CCD core-control documentation before using it. Disabling a core bit is not the same as configuring when firmware moves tasks between CCDs.

Core Flex versus Windows scheduling

Approach Where control happens What is established What to consider
Core Flex Motherboard firmware Reported as configurable CCD-switching behavior, with example triggers including core current and memory activity. Availability depends on the motherboard BIOS; manual settings need to be evaluated against the user’s workloads.
Windows scheduling Operating system and related software AMD worked with Microsoft on scheduling across the two CCD types. It provides an automatic alternative; the sources do not quantify its performance against manual firmware control.

The available sources publish no controlled performance comparison or benchmark proving a gaming uplift from Core Flex. Treat it as a way to adjust firmware behavior, not as a guaranteed speed boost. Measure your own relevant workloads before deciding whether a manual configuration is preferable to automatic scheduling.

BIOS safety and rollback

ASUS says its AM5 Ryzen 7000 BIOS updates follow AMD guidance and include a 1.3 V SOC-voltage cap. This is platform safety guidance, not evidence that every BIOS file adds Core Flex. ASUS directs users to obtain the latest BIOS for their exact motherboard model; review its instructions and release notes before flashing. See ASUS’s AM5 BIOS support guidance.
