The Astute class is the Royal Navy’s successor to the Trafalgar class: a larger, newer nuclear-powered attack submarine design with video-based horizon scanning, the Sonar 2076 suite and land-attack capability. The strongest published size comparison is historical: the Ministry of Defence said in 2014 that Astute was 50 per cent bigger than the then-current Trafalgar class. Exact, matched specifications for both classes are not established by the official sources cited here.
How Astute and Trafalgar differ at a glance
| Feature | Astute class | Trafalgar class |
|---|---|---|
| Role and generation | Successor to Trafalgar in the Royal Navy’s attack-submarine role; nuclear-powered and conventionally armed, according to the Ministry of Defence’s 2025 update. Source | Predecessor class. The Royal Navy described the transition to Astute in May 2022; that account is a dated snapshot, not a current fleet-status statement. Source |
| Published size evidence | 97 metres long and 7,400 tonnes, according to the Royal Navy’s class page. Source | No directly matched official length or displacement figure is established here. In 2014, the Ministry of Defence described Astute as 50 per cent bigger than the then-current Trafalgar class. Source |
| Horizon scanning | Uses high-specification video technology rather than a traditional optical periscope arrangement. Source | The 2014 government comparison identifies Astute as the first Royal Navy submarine class without optical periscopes, but does not provide a broader matched equipment specification. Source |
| Sensors | Official class material identifies Sonar 2076, including hull and towed arrays. Source | A comparable Trafalgar sonar specification is not stated in the official sources cited here. |
| Weapons | Official descriptions name Tomahawk land-attack missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. The Royal Navy says HMS Audacious is provisioned for up to 38 weapons in six 21-inch tubes; that individual-boat description should not be treated as a class-wide capacity figure. Class source; Audacious source | A like-for-like Trafalgar weapon-capacity figure is not established in the cited official material. |
Astute is larger, but the comparison needs a date qualification
The Royal Navy gives Astute’s length as 97 metres and its displacement as 7,400 tonnes. The Ministry of Defence’s 2014 announcement said the class was 50 per cent bigger than the Trafalgar class then in service. That percentage is an attributed comparison from 2014, not a current independent measurement or a matched table of both classes’ dimensions. The cited sources do not establish an exact Trafalgar length or displacement that can be set beside Astute’s figures.
Astute changed how crews scan the horizon
Astute uses high-specification video technology for horizon scanning instead of the traditional optical periscope arrangement described for earlier Royal Navy boats. The 2014 Ministry of Defence announcement called it the first Royal Navy submarine class without optical periscopes. That establishes a notable design change, but not detailed specifications for Trafalgar’s optics or a complete comparison of the two classes’ sensor systems.
Astute’s published sensors and weapons
Sonar
The Royal Navy identifies Sonar 2076 as part of Astute’s equipment, including hull and towed arrays. The official sources cited here do not provide a directly comparable Trafalgar sonar specification, so a claim about the precise degree of improvement would go beyond the available comparison.

Weapons and strike role
Astute’s official descriptions name Tomahawk land-attack missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. The Ministry of Defence’s 2025 update says the class is conventionally armed: nuclear propulsion does not mean the submarines carry nuclear weapons. The Royal Navy’s HMS Audacious page specifies provision for up to 38 weapons in six 21-inch torpedo tubes for that boat. That is an individual-vessel description, not a verified capacity comparison with Trafalgar or a figure to generalize to every Astute boat.
Propulsion, endurance and missions
Astute is nuclear-powered, allowing it to operate submerged for extended periods; GOV.UK says it can circumnavigate the globe while submerged and make its own oxygen and drinking water. The Ministry of Defence’s 2025 update describes missions at sea and for land attack, as well as support to maritime task groups and special forces. These capabilities explain the class’s operational role, but the cited sources do not provide a quantitative, like-for-like endurance comparison with Trafalgar.

How the two classes fit into the fleet transition
Astute replaced Trafalgar in the Royal Navy’s attack-submarine role. In May 2022, the Royal Navy reported that HMS Talent and HMS Trenchant were decommissioning and said HMS Triumph remained in service at that point. That is a historical status report; it should not be read as a current inventory. Fleet numbers and the construction or delivery stage of individual Astute boats can change, so dated class pages and updates should not be combined as though they describe one moment.
The Ministry of Defence’s 2025 annual update reported an Astute Programme value of £12.2 billion and said five of seven boats had been delivered at the time of that report. Those are programme and delivery figures, not submarine specifications or a current count of operational boats.

What the official comparison does—and does not—establish
The available official material supports a clear generational comparison: Astute followed Trafalgar, is documented as larger, replaces the traditional optical-periscope arrangement with video-based scanning, and has published sonar and weapon capabilities. It does not provide a complete matched technical data sheet for Trafalgar and Astute. In particular, the cited sources do not establish comparable Trafalgar figures for length, displacement, crew, speed, reactor, weapons capacity or sonar, so those figures should not be inferred from Astute’s specifications.
