The Asetek WaterChill Xternal (model 03-L-7004) was a mid-2000s external liquid-cooling kit for retro PCs. Its separate enclosure combined a radiator, pump, reservoir, four fans, an LCD and USB software control, with period-listed blocks for the CPU, graphics card and chipset. The documented CPU sockets are Intel S478/S775 and AMD S754/S940/S939; the available documentation does not establish compatibility with modern processors or current PCs.
What was the WaterChill Xternal?
Unlike a modern all-in-one cooler built around a radiator and pump mounted inside a PC, the Xternal used a standalone aluminum enclosure connected to the computer by coolant tubing, Molex power and USB. Bjorn3D’s December 2006 review described the unit sitting on top of an ATX case. HotHardware’s August 2006 review listed its dimensions as 182 × 480 × 102 mm and empty weight as 4.27 kg (9.41 lb), so it was a substantial piece of equipment outside the case.
The enclosure contained a Black Ice Pro dual 120 mm radiator, four 120 mm low-noise Adda fans, a 12 V WaterChill Xtreme pump, a 160 cm³ reservoir with a viewing window, and a 20-character LCD. HotHardware also listed 10 mm (3/8-inch) outside-diameter tubing, power consumption of 7–12 W, maximum flow of 1020 l/h and maximum head of 240 cm. These are specifications published in the 2006 review, not new measurements of surviving units. HotHardware’s WaterChill Xternal review
What came in the kit?
The documented package was intended to cool more than the processor. HotHardware listed three blocks: the WaterChill Antarctica CPU block (CPU01/A), a VGA block (VGA01/P1), and a chipset block (NB01/P1). Its descriptions said the VGA block was for Nvidia GeForce and ATI Radeon cards and the chipset block for Intel, AMD, SiS and VIA chipsets. Those are broad period descriptions, not a precise compatibility list for every card or motherboard.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Bjorn3D’s review listed a 3 m tube set, PCI shield and power-extension hoses, fittings and mounting parts, anti-algae additive, thermal compound and a manual among the package contents. A reviewer’s particular setup used only the CPU block: the reviewer considered the motherboard heatsink adequate and did not want to modify a graphics card in a way that could affect its warranty. That describes one installation, not a general recommendation to leave out the other blocks. Bjorn3D’s WaterChill Xtreme review
Which processors did the CPU block support?
HotHardware’s socket list for the CPU01/A block is limited to the Intel Socket 478 and Socket 775 platforms, and AMD Socket 754, 939 and 940 platforms. This identifies the era of hardware the kit was designed to serve. The list does not validate fitment on contemporary Intel or AMD sockets, and the available material does not establish that adapters or replacement mounting hardware exist.

Is it suitable for a modern PC?
There is no documented basis here to recommend the Xternal for a current PC build. Its published CPU-block mounts are for legacy sockets, and the period’s general VGA and chipset descriptions do not establish compatibility with present-day graphics cards or motherboards. No current support, spare-parts supply, replacement-part compatibility, or modern performance testing is established.
For a retro system matching one of the documented sockets, compatibility still depends on the exact block, mounting hardware, tubing and fittings included with the particular unit. The 2006 package description cannot establish what a seller has today. Treat it as a legacy component whose condition and completeness need to be verified, not as a ready-to-install modern cooler.

What should a second-hand buyer verify?
Documentation gives a useful checklist, but cannot establish the state of an individual used kit. Before buying or powering one, confirm the actual contents and condition rather than relying on an original-box list or a listing title.
- Check that the enclosure, radiator, pump, reservoir, fans, LCD and intended cooling blocks are present, and note any missing or substituted parts.
- Confirm the CPU block’s socket mount matches the target retro motherboard; do not infer modern fitment from a general compatibility claim.
- Inspect the tubing, fittings, reservoir and blocks for cracks, corrosion, deposits or signs of leakage. A historical package list does not prove that tubing or coolant remains usable.
- Ask whether the pump and all four fans operate and whether the LCD and USB control function. The reviews describe these features, but do not verify their operation on any unit available today.
- Establish what power and connection cables are included and whether the seller has safely tested the system. Do not assume replacement fittings, fluids or parts will match without confirming their dimensions and compatibility.
What do Asetek’s historical figures mean?
Asetek’s undated historical WaterChill page describes the WaterChill family as its first water-based liquid cooler and gives a 50,000-hour operating rating and 200 W heat-dissipation rating. Those are retrospective manufacturer statements about the family, not independent test results or measurements of a particular Xternal unit. Asetek’s company history
