For a conventional Windows desktop, x86 is the safer default if you rely on specific legacy software, specialist devices, or games. Windows on Arm can be a good choice when you have checked that your essential apps and hardware work on it. Arm support has expanded and Windows can emulate many x86 and x64 apps, but emulation does not guarantee compatibility—especially for drivers and some games.
This is a compatibility recommendation, not a claim that one architecture is always faster, cheaper, more efficient, or easier to upgrade. Those comparisons depend on the specific desktop and workload.
What ARM and x86 mean for a desktop
ARM and x86 refer to processor instruction-set architectures: broadly, the different instruction languages that software is built to run on. The processor brand is a related but separate detail. Qualcomm describes Intel processors as typically used in desktop PCs and based on x86, while Snapdragon processors are RISC-based. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon FAQ explains the distinction.
For a Windows desktop buyer, the practical question is not which architecture is theoretically better. It is whether your operating system, applications, drivers, and peripherals support the specific PC you plan to buy. This comparison concerns Windows on Arm; an Apple Silicon Mac is also Arm-based, but it is not a Windows on Arm PC.

How Windows on Arm runs applications
Windows on Arm runs Arm64 applications natively. It can also run many x86 and x64 applications through emulation, which translates instructions so software built for those architectures can run on an Arm-based Windows PC. Microsoft describes these platform capabilities in its Windows on Arm documentation and guide to how emulation works.
Native support and emulation are not interchangeable guarantees. An app may install and run under emulation but behave differently from a native Arm64 version, and compatibility can depend on the app and its version. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes the Prism emulator for improved performance with emulated apps. That describes a platform capability, not a promise that every program works or performs equally well.

Native Arm apps are increasingly available
Microsoft lists native versions of Microsoft 365 apps and applications such as Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve in its Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ. Arm’s PC Computing and Windows on Arm page also identifies applications with native Arm64 Windows versions. Treat vendor app lists as a starting point: check the exact app, release, and features you need.
Microsoft reported on August 25, 2026, that its “Works on Windows on Arm” catalog contained over 7,000 verified apps and games. That is Microsoft’s count of entries in its catalog, not an independent audit or a measure of every app’s performance. Microsoft’s announcement describes the catalog and ongoing ecosystem work.

Where compatibility can break
Drivers and peripherals
Emulating an application does not make an incompatible hardware driver work. Windows on Arm requires suitable drivers for hardware and software that depends on them. Microsoft cautions that drivers for hardware, games, and apps must be designed for Windows 11 Arm-based PCs; a device that depends on an unavailable driver may not work fully.
Before choosing an Arm desktop, check the manufacturer’s support page for each essential device or tool, including printers, scanners, audio interfaces, specialist input devices, security software, assistive technology, and virtualization products. Microsoft says most printers are supported, including Mopria printers, but advises checking specific hardware when uncertain. A Windows inbox driver or an Arm-compatible driver from the manufacturer may be required.

Games and anti-cheat systems
Do not assume that all games either work or fail. Microsoft warns that certain games may not work when they rely on anti-cheat drivers that are not made for Windows 11 Arm PCs. Check the exact game and its publisher’s current compatibility information, with Microsoft’s compatibility catalog as a starting point. A game’s main program running under emulation does not prove that its anti-cheat component will work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the architecture that fits your workload
| Your situation | Practical direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| You depend on a particular legacy app, specialist driver, or peripheral | x86 is the safer default | Confirm support for the exact program, device, and Windows version before buying either kind of PC. |
| Your essential apps have native Arm64 versions | Windows on Arm is a reasonable option | Check that the needed features and versions are available, and verify all device drivers. |
| Your essential apps are x86 or x64 only | Arm may still work through emulation, but check first | Test or confirm the specific app and version; do not treat the ability to emulate as a guarantee. |
| You play games that use anti-cheat or other low-level drivers | Decide title by title; x86 is the lower-risk default if support is uncertain | Ask the publisher about the exact game and anti-cheat system on Windows on Arm. |
| You are choosing based on speed, price, power use, or upgradeability | Compare complete desktop systems, not architecture labels | Use comparable configurations and workloads; these factors are not determined by ARM versus x86 alone. |
A practical compatibility check before buying
- List the must-haves. Write down the applications, games, peripherals, and specialist tools you cannot do without, including exact product names and versions where possible.
- Check app architecture and support. Look for an Arm64 version from the software publisher. If there is none, ask whether the x86 or x64 version supports Windows on Arm and whether the features you use work under emulation.
- Check every driver-dependent device. Consult the device maker’s support page or contact its support team for Windows on Arm driver availability. Pay particular attention to older or specialized hardware.
- Verify games with their publishers. Confirm support for the exact title and anti-cheat system rather than relying on the game’s ability to launch.
- Compare the actual PCs. Once compatibility is clear, compare the configurations against your budget, workload, ports, and expansion needs. The sources cited here do not establish a general performance, price, power, or upgradeability winner.
Do not confuse Windows on Arm with macOS on Apple Silicon
Apple Silicon Macs use Arm-based processors, but that does not mean they are Windows on Arm desktops. Qualcomm says macOS is designed for Apple hardware and processors and has no official support on Snapdragon processors in its Snapdragon FAQ. If your intended operating system is Windows, assess a Windows PC’s own support rather than inferring it from the word “Arm.”
