Neither Arm nor Imagination is a universal winner. Arm is the stronger fit when a chip team values a broad platform spanning CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and system IP, plus established mobile and automotive relationships. Imagination is compelling when configurable graphics IP, multi-core scaling and targeted display or automotive designs matter most. These are GPU-IP suppliers—not makers of interchangeable retail video cards—and the right choice depends on the SoC workload, software, safety needs, license and schedule.
What are you comparing: Arm Mali and Immortalis or Imagination IMG?
Arm and Imagination both license semiconductor intellectual property for other companies’ chips. Arm’s graphics families include Mali and Immortalis; Imagination is best known for its IMG and PowerVR graphics IP. A chip designer licenses IP and integrates it into a system-on-chip (SoC). Consumers generally encounter the resulting GPU inside a phone, Chromebook, vehicle system or other device—not as a standalone graphics card.
The comparison is therefore about design fit and the complete implementation, not a simple retail-spec contest. GPU performance and video capabilities depend on the licensed configuration and how the chip vendor integrates it, including the software stack and other SoC components.

| Video and codecs | A codec-by-codec comparison with Imagination is not stated in the cited company materials. | A codec-by-codec comparison with Arm is not stated in the cited company materials. |
| Independent head-to-head results | A neutral, controlled Arm-versus-Imagination benchmark and a current comparative video-GPU market-share figure are not stated in the available company materials. | |
Which is better for graphics performance?
There is no evidence here to support saying Mali, Immortalis or IMG is categorically faster. Peak figures from different vendors are not a controlled comparison: results need to match the GPU configuration, process node, power limits, software, resolution and actual workload. A vendor’s performance claim should not be treated as an independent result.

For a design decision, ask both vendors and the prospective SoC integrator for results on the same representative workloads. For graphics, that might mean the target user interface, game scenes, rendering APIs and sustained thermal conditions. For video, test the codecs, formats, resolutions and concurrent display or compute tasks the product must support. Seek measured performance per watt and per silicon area under those conditions rather than comparing headline peak numbers.
What the product families suggest about fit
Arm: a graphics option within a wider compute platform
Arm’s advantage is breadth: GPU IP is part of a portfolio that also includes CPUs, NPUs and system IP. That can be attractive to teams seeking coordinated access to several parts of a chip platform. Arm’s 2025 review points to Immortalis-G925 in MediaTek’s Kompanio Ultra for Chromebook Plus devices and says Arm GPUs planned for 2026 will add dedicated neural accelerators intended to bring AI-powered, PC-quality graphics to mobile. Those are roadmap and deployment statements from Arm, not independent performance comparisons.

Imagination: configurable graphics IP across product categories
Imagination describes IMG B-Series as scalable, multi-core graphics IP. Its BXE is positioned for user interfaces and entry-level gaming; BXM for mid-range mobile gaming and digital-TV interfaces; BXT for higher performance through data-center use; and BXS for automotive designs intended to support ISO 26262 requirements. Imagination also describes secure multitasking through HyperLane virtualization and related DXS, DXT and CXM products for use cases including automotive safety, ray-tracing configurations and HDR interfaces. These are vendor product descriptions; they do not establish comparative results against Arm.
Imagination’s annual-report material says C-Series adds ray tracing and describes CXT as extending its decentralized multi-core architecture toward laptop, desktop and cloud gaming. The same report characterizes Imagination as having a strong position in Android smartphones and a leading share in automotive HMI GPUs. Those market-position statements are Imagination’s own, not neutral market-share measurements.

Does either GPU have an advantage for video?
“Video” can mean rendering 3D graphics, displaying a user interface over video, driving one or more displays, or decoding and processing particular video formats. Those are related but distinct requirements. The available company materials do not provide a codec-by-codec Arm-versus-Imagination comparison, so they do not establish that one GPU family supports more formats or delivers better video playback.
For a real SoC selection, confirm the planned chip’s media blocks and display pipeline with the chip vendor. Ask which codecs, profiles, bit depths, resolutions, HDR modes and simultaneous streams are supported, and whether the relevant work is handled by dedicated media hardware or by the GPU. Confirm the required driver and operating-system support on the exact SoC. A licensed GPU IP family alone does not answer those integration questions.

How to assess automotive and industrial designs
Automotive and industrial projects need more than graphics throughput. Teams should check functional-safety scope, evidence and integration responsibilities, isolation and virtualization needs, lifecycle support, and the target display and HMI workload. Imagination identifies BXS as an automotive product designed for ISO 26262-capable applications and describes HyperLane secure multitasking; these are company claims that need validation against the project’s safety case and chosen configuration.
Arm’s 2026 Form 10-K says its automotive share is highest in technologically advanced areas such as in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). This is Arm’s disclosure, not independent market-share research, and it does not prove that a particular Arm GPU meets a given safety requirement. In either case, request documentation for the exact licensed IP, implementation and toolchain rather than inferring certification or compliance from a family name.

Licensing, ecosystem and commercial context
Arm’s 2026 Form 10-K states: “Our primary business is licensing our IP products to semiconductor companies, OEMs, CSPs and other organizations to design their chips.” It says Arm receives a per-unit royalty on substantially all chips shipped and describes GPUs and NPUs as complementary products. Arm also offers several access models, so a design team should compare the specific license, support, royalty and delivery terms available for its project rather than assume one standard arrangement.
Arm reported FYE25 revenue above $4 billion; its Q4 royalty and licensing revenue each exceeded $600 million, and full-year royalty revenue exceeded $2 billion — Arm, 2025. These are company-level financial figures, not GPU-specific revenue, market share or evidence of a graphics-performance advantage.
Comparable public license pricing, royalty rates and support terms for Arm and Imagination are not stated in the company materials summarized here. Request project-specific terms, IP availability, verification collateral, software and driver commitments, and the support plan. These affect total cost and schedule as much as the IP label does.
Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Define the workload. Specify graphics scenes, frame-rate and power targets, display configuration, video formats, and whether AI acceleration is part of the requirement.
- Request comparable evidence. Ask each vendor and SoC partner to test the same workloads on target configurations, with power, silicon area, software version and test conditions documented.
- Validate the software path. Confirm API and operating-system support, driver maturity, developer tools, update ownership and integration responsibilities for the intended SoC.
- Check safety and isolation. For automotive or industrial use, map safety evidence, virtualization, secure operation and certification responsibilities to the specific design.
- Compare commercial and schedule risk. Review license structure, per-chip royalties if applicable, support obligations, IP delivery timing, implementation effort and fallback options.
- Decide on the integrated chip, not the brand alone. The chosen GPU must work with the SoC’s media hardware, memory system, display pipeline, process node and thermal budget.
When each is the better fit
- Favor Arm when platform breadth and access to CPU, GPU, NPU and system IP are central, or when the project values Arm’s established mobile and automotive relationships.
- Favor Imagination when configurable graphics IP and multi-core scaling align with the design, or when a specific IMG family and its display, automotive or virtualization capabilities fit the target product.
- Keep both in contention when the decision hinges on performance per watt, codecs, driver support, safety evidence or licensing economics: those require workload- and contract-specific confirmation, not a universal brand ranking.
