Choose Argos if you want Storybook screenshots captured in CI and reviewed through a hosted service; choose Loki if you want to keep reference images in your repository and manage their comparison and approval workflow yourself. Both compare screenshots with accepted baselines, but they make different trade-offs in review, storage, setup, and ownership. The available documentation does not establish that either is more accurate, faster, or less flaky.

How Argos and Loki handle screenshots and baselines

Visual regression testing captures Storybook stories as images and compares them with a known-good baseline. A difference gives the team a way to review a possible visual change; it is not, by itself, proof that the change is a bug. Storybook describes this general snapshot-and-baseline approach in its visual testing documentation.

Argos: CI capture with hosted review

Argos’s Storybook integration captures stories in a real browser during CI and uploads the screenshots to Argos for review. Its addon documentation currently lists Storybook 8 through 11. It recommends the Vitest integration for Storybook 9 or later, with Vitest 4 or 5, and also documents a Storybook Test Runner integration for Storybook 8 or later. Check the live Argos Storybook addon documentation and your exact versions before adopting it; compatibility listings can change.

This workflow puts screenshot review in a hosted service. Review Argos’s current documentation for its baseline behavior and account controls, and plan for the service and account to be part of your CI workflow.

Loki: repository-managed references and diffs

Loki’s documented flow creates reference images, compares new captures against them, generates diffs, and lets the team approve intended updates. Its guide recommends checking reference images into Git and notes Git LFS as an option. This gives the team direct ownership of the baseline files, while making image storage, diffs, approvals, and CI setup its responsibility.

Loki’s README lists Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator targets. Treat this as the project’s documented target list, not a guarantee for every current Storybook, browser, operating-system, or simulator version. Verify the configuration your project needs.

Practical differences to weigh

Decision Argos CI Loki
Where review happens Screenshots from CI are uploaded to Argos for hosted visual review. Generated diffs and approval are part of a workflow managed around the project’s reference images.
Baseline ownership Hosted-service workflow; consult current Argos documentation for baseline behavior and account controls. Reference images are kept in Git, optionally with Git LFS.
Documented Storybook compatibility The addon page lists Storybook 8–11; Vitest integration is listed for Storybook 9+ with Vitest 4 or 5, and Test Runner for Storybook 8+. The reviewed setup materials do not establish a complete current compatibility matrix.
Documented capture targets The reviewed addon material establishes real-browser story capture, but not a comparable multi-platform target matrix. README lists Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator.
CI responsibility CI captures and uploads screenshots for hosted review. The team builds Storybook, runs Loki against it, manages references, and approves intended updates. The CI guide shows --requireReference to fail when a reference is missing.
Published price information Argos’s pricing page lists a free Hobby tier up to 5,000 screenshots and Pro starting at $100/month with 35,000 included. These are vendor-listed terms, not a project-specific total-cost estimate. The reviewed materials describe an open-source, self-managed workflow but do not quantify CI, storage, or maintenance costs.

How to choose for your team

Prefer Argos when hosted review fits your process

  • You want screenshots captured in CI and uploaded for review in a service rather than building a repository-artifact workflow.
  • Your Storybook, test runner, and browser versions match Argos’s current integration documentation.
  • You have estimated screenshot volume and checked the current plan and any applicable overage terms.

Prefer Loki when you want to own the baseline files

  • You want references checked into the project, with Git LFS available if appropriate for repository storage.
  • Your team is ready to own image updates, diff review, approval, and CI maintenance.
  • A documented Loki capture target, such as an iOS simulator or Android emulator, is relevant—but you have verified it for your actual stack.

Validate the choice against your project

  1. List the exact Storybook, Node, browser, and runner versions used in local development and CI.
  2. Decide whether reviewers should use a hosted interface or review diffs alongside repository-managed references.
  3. Identify required browsers and platforms, particularly if simulator coverage matters, and validate the specific configuration rather than relying on a general target list.
  4. Estimate capture volume from the number of stories, viewports, and CI runs. Compare Argos’s live pricing with the CI runtime, storage, and maintenance work your Loki setup would require.
  5. Run a representative suite in your own CI and examine how fonts, animations, asynchronous states, and environment differences affect repeatability.

Neither the cited product documentation nor the available comparison evidence supplies a controlled head-to-head result for visual accuracy, execution speed, flakiness, or maintenance effort. Treat stability as something to validate with your own stories and CI environment, not as a settled advantage for either tool.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative to try first

If your need is a general website screenshot service rather than a Storybook baseline-review workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a direct replacement for Argos or Loki’s Storybook baseline and diff-approval workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Loki’s setup-guide date prove that the project is abandoned?

No. The getting-started page’s displayed update date alone does not establish the project’s current maintenance status. Check its current releases and issue activity before relying on it.

Can either tool guarantee that every visual difference is a regression?

No. A screenshot difference identifies a change to inspect; the team still needs to decide whether that change is intended.
