Do not assume they are safe. If a backup application, agent, plug-in or management service received a malicious or compromised update, it may have held the same administrative rights as the backup system. That can expose or destroy connected repositories, catalogs, retention settings, encryption keys and credentials. Treat every recovery point reachable from the affected software as untrusted until you map the compromise window, preserve evidence and complete an isolated restore test.

Your best immediate protection is a recovery copy the software could not reach: an offline copy or storage with technically enforced immutable retention. Keep that copy disconnected from the suspect management plane while you investigate.

What a backup-software compromise can affect

Backup software is usually trusted to read production data, write to repositories, change retention policies, manage catalogs and call cloud or storage APIs. A malicious update running with those permissions can therefore do more than corrupt one backup job. Depending on the product and account design, it could:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Delete, overwrite or encrypt recovery points that are online and writable.
  • Change retention, replication or immutability settings where the service account is allowed to do so.
  • Alter catalogs and indexes so valid files appear missing or restores select the wrong point.
  • Read backup data or copy encryption keys and cloud credentials.
  • Use management-server trust relationships to reach agents, repositories or production systems.
  • Plant modified files in a backup set that later reintroduce malware during recovery.

These possibilities do not prove that your installation was attacked. They define why connectivity and privilege matter. A repository that the affected software could not authenticate to, resolve on the network or modify is a stronger candidate for preservation than one continuously connected with shared administrator credentials.

Do these six things first

  1. Contain access. From a clean administrative system, isolate the backup server, agents, management console and service accounts from production and the internet where operations allow. Disable scheduled jobs and integrations that could spread the update or continue destructive actions. Do not reconnect an offline copy to the suspect console merely to inspect it.
  2. Preserve evidence. Export logs, update packages, installer hashes, vendor advisories, endpoint alerts, authentication records and accurate timestamps. Record every host that received the update, the installed version, job history, repository changes, retention-policy changes, catalog activity, key use and restore activity. Preserve originals read-only where possible.
  3. Rotate secrets from a clean system. Change backup-console accounts, repository credentials, cloud and API keys, storage administrator passwords, service-account secrets and encryption credentials. Revoke old sessions and tokens. Review privileged groups and remove paths that let production identities administer backups or let backup identities administer production.
  4. Map the recovery window. Identify the newest recovery point created before the suspected compromise, then list copies that were offline, air-gapped, logically isolated or under immutable/WORM retention during the relevant period. Record creation time, storage location, retention lock and the identity that could modify each copy.
  5. Verify before use. Check repository and object-storage integrity metadata, backup-application consistency checks and available malware scans. These checks can find corruption but cannot certify that a sophisticated attacker did not alter a valid-looking file.
  6. Restore in isolation. Test the strongest candidate in a quarantined network with no route to production. Scan the restored operating systems and applications, validate identity and configuration dependencies, and only then plan a controlled production recovery.

If no trustworthy copy remains, avoid destructive cleanup or mass deletion. Preserve systems for incident response and forensics, obtain the vendor’s compromise timeline and indicators of compromise, and involve qualified responders before rebuilding.

Which backups are safer?

Assess each copy against six questions: Can the compromised software or its credentials reach it? Can anyone delete or shorten retention? Is the media and site separate from production? Are encryption keys independent? How often is a restore tested? Can the copy recover identity, applications, configuration and data together?

Recovery-copy type What protects it What can still go wrong How to evaluate it now
Online repository managed by the affected product Fast access and normal backup controls The compromised service may delete, overwrite, reconfigure or exfiltrate it Treat as potentially exposed; compare logs, hashes, retention and access history with the compromise window
Disconnected external drive The software cannot reach it while it is unplugged; physical separation limits remote deletion theft, damage, stale data, lost encryption keys or malware copied during the last connection Keep disconnected, preserve the drive, make a forensic or read-only working copy, then restore-test in isolation
Immutable cloud vault or object storage Retention lock can technically block deletion and modification; logical isolation can separate it from production Misconfigured lock, shared identity, exposed keys, wrong retention period or provider/account compromise Confirm the lock state, retention end date, delete-denial logs, account boundaries and independent recovery credentials
Air-gapped or logically isolated secondary site Network and identity boundaries reduce attack paths Replication may have copied corruption; administrators or shared credentials may still bridge sites Check replication timing, destination access logs, separate domains/accounts and the last known-good point
Encrypted backup without isolation Protects confidentiality when keys and ciphertext are handled correctly An authorized or compromised service can still delete accessible ciphertext or use stolen keys Keep it as a confidentiality control, not proof of recoverability; validate key custody and retention separately

Microsoft Azure describes immutable vaults as protecting backup data from deletion or modification during a security compromise. AWS guidance similarly describes WORM storage and Vault Lock as controls against deletion, overwrite, ransomware compromise and retention changes. Those protections apply only when the lock and identity design actually prevent the affected account from changing them.

Should you unplug an external backup drive?

Yes, if it is currently connected to a system or management service that may be compromised and disconnecting it will not damage an active write operation. Stop the job cleanly if possible, document the time and system state, then disconnect the drive and label it. Do not browse files from an infected workstation. Store the device where theft, fire, moisture and unauthorized access are controlled.

A disconnected drive is not automatically clean. Malware could have been copied during its last connection, the newest files may be incomplete, and an attacker could have erased older versions before you unplugged it. Preserve the original, calculate hashes where practical, and perform examination and restoration on a separate working copy. Keep a second offline copy or a protected image before running repair tools that might alter evidence.

How to tell whether a recovery point is usable

Establish its provenance

Use job logs, repository audit trails and storage timestamps to show when the point was created, which host created it and which credentials wrote it. Prefer a point completed before the first suspicious update execution. A timestamp alone is insufficient if the attacker could alter the repository clock, catalog or metadata.

Check integrity and consistency

Run the product’s verification or checksum process against a copy, not the preserved original. Compare hashes with independently retained manifests when available. Check that chains, snapshots, deduplication metadata and encryption headers are complete. A successful consistency check shows that the format is readable; it does not establish that the restored operating system is malware-free.

Scan restored content safely

Restore to an isolated network with controlled DNS and no route to production. Use current endpoint and offline malware scanners, inspect startup items, scheduled tasks, services, scripts and administrator accounts, and compare critical binaries and configurations with trusted installation media. Keep the environment powered down or quarantined until investigators approve any transfer.

Prove the whole service can return

Test more than a random file. Restore identity services, application servers, databases, configuration, certificates, secrets and the data relationships that make the service operate. Confirm that users can authenticate, applications open expected records, permissions are correct and recovery objectives are met. NIST SP 1339 (2026) describes effective backup management as creating backups regularly, testing them and reviewing them in recovery exercises.

How immutable and offline designs differ

Offline media

Offline storage creates a hard reachability boundary: when disconnected, the backup software cannot issue a delete command. It can be inexpensive and independent of a cloud account, but people must rotate media, protect it physically, track encryption keys and perform regular restore tests. A drive left permanently attached is online storage, regardless of what it is called.

Immutable cloud storage

Immutability is a technical rule that rejects modification or deletion until a retention period ends. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes a 72-hour minimum cooling-off period before AWS Backup Vault Lock becomes permanently locked. Azure guidance describes configurable soft-delete retention of up to 180 days and identifies 14 days as the default in that guidance. These are service-specific settings, not universal guarantees: verify the region, account type, current defaults, lock mode and exact expiration date in your configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud immutability still requires separate identities and network paths. If production and backup share an administrator, security domain or API key, an attacker may control both the data and the policy around it. Review delete-denial events and test recovery with credentials that the compromised management plane cannot revoke.

Build a recovery layout that survives a software compromise

Use the 3-2-1-1 pattern as a design target: three copies of data, on two media types, with one copy off site and one copy immutable or isolated. Microsoft Azure presents this as current guidance. The pattern is a resilience goal, not a certification; each copy must have a distinct failure boundary.

  • Separate identities: use dedicated backup and storage accounts, hardware-backed or vaulted secrets where available, least privilege, multi-factor authentication and no shared production administrator.
  • Separate networks: restrict management interfaces, repository protocols and replication paths. Permit connections only for scheduled operations and administration from controlled hosts.
  • Independent keys: keep encryption keys in a service or vault whose administrators and recovery process are separate from the backup application. Document emergency access without embedding keys in the backup server.
  • Enforced retention: use WORM, object lock or vault lock where supported. Test that a backup operator cannot shorten retention, delete an object or alter the lock.
  • Geographic and media diversity: combine local fast recovery with a separate site or cloud account and offline media. Account for fire, flooding, supply-chain compromise and regional outages.
  • Routine recovery exercises: schedule file, application and full-environment restores. Record elapsed time, missing dependencies, credential requirements and corrective actions.

CISA recommends maintaining offline, encrypted backups and regularly testing their availability and integrity in a disaster-recovery scenario. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises keeping backups separate from primary systems and making them immutable where possible because attackers often target backups to delay recovery.

What to document before declaring recovery

  • The affected product, versions, update package hashes and vendor indicators of compromise.
  • Every host, repository, cloud account and credential that received or could execute the update.
  • The earliest suspicious timestamp and the last confirmed normal backup operation.
  • Retention, immutability and delete-denial settings for every candidate copy.
  • Evidence that keys, catalogs, replication and management identities were not altered.
  • Isolated restore results for identity, applications, configurations and data, including malware-scan findings.
  • Approvals and compensating controls for reconnecting any system to production.

Until those records and tests support a conclusion, describe affected copies as untrusted rather than safe. The defensible answer to “Are my backups safe?” is conditional: a copy is safer when the compromised software and credentials could not reach or alter it, its retention is technically enforced or it was offline, and an isolated restore demonstrates that it works.
