Not unconditionally. A robot lawn mower can injure a pet or child who is on the lawn, and its blades can injure or kill small wildlife. Keep people and pets off the mowing area, schedule operation during daylight where wildlife is present, and inspect the grass before each run. Sensors, blade-stop systems and obstacle detection reduce some hazards but do not guarantee that a small animal will be detected before contact.

What “safe” means in practice

Robot mowers are designed to operate without a person walking behind them, but autonomous operation does not make the cutting area risk-free. Safety has several separate questions:

  • Can a person or pet be cut if they enter the mowing area?
  • Can the mower detect a small animal before its blades or chassis touch it?
  • Can scheduling and owner checks reduce encounters with wildlife?
  • Does a particular model have independently tested evidence, rather than only a marketing claim?

The strongest available evidence concerns hedgehogs. Two studies tested 18 and 19 mower models against dead European hedgehogs. They found that models differed substantially: some caused extensive damage, while others caused no damage in the test. The studies did not measure the chance of an encounter in an ordinary garden, and they do not prove that any currently sold mower is universally safe.

For children and pets, manufacturer instructions are more straightforward: they should be off the lawn while the mower is operating. A mower should be stopped or returned to its charging station before a child or animal enters the area.

Can a robot lawn mower hurt or kill a hedgehog?

Yes. The collision tests show that injury is possible, although they do not provide a per-mower, per-hour or per-garden injury rate.

What the 2021 study found

Rasmussen and colleagues tested 18 robotic mower models using dead European hedgehogs in several weight classes and body positions. No model detected dependent juvenile hedgehogs weighing less than 200 grams before physical contact. Some mowers caused extensive damage; other models consistently caused no damage in the test conditions.

That study reported a higher safety index for mowers with pivoting blades, skid plates and front-wheel drive. Those were statistical results within that experiment, not a certification that every mower with one of those features is safe. A design feature can affect the outcome without preventing every dangerous contact.

What the 2024 study found

A later study examined 19 models and proposed a standardized hedgehog-safety test. All but one tested mower physically touched the hedgehog carcass before detecting it. Some models injured the carcass and others did not. Unlike the earlier paper, this study found little evidence that the technical features it examined changed the probability of injury.

The differing conclusions are important. They show why a buyer should not treat a single feature—such as a sensor, blade design or drive layout—as a guarantee. Test methods, model samples and measurements differed between the studies.

What real-world case records show

In 2024, the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research described 370 documented hedgehog injury cases involving electric gardening tools in Germany. Almost half of the hedgehogs in that selected case series did not survive. The figures describe reported cases, not all injuries in Germany, and they cannot be converted into a probability for a particular mower or garden.

Why obstacle detection is not a guarantee

Obstacle detection generally works by sensing a change in resistance, an object shape, a distance signal or a lift/tilt condition. A small, low object can be difficult to distinguish from grass or ground irregularities. The 19-model study’s finding—that all but one mower touched the hedgehog carcass before detection—illustrates the limitation directly.

Even when detection triggers a stop, the delay before the blades stop matters. A label such as “animal detection” describes a feature, not a promise that every animal will be recognized in time. Small juveniles, animals curled into the grass and wildlife that remains still are especially difficult cases.

Safety element What it may do What it does not establish
Obstacle or animal sensor May detect an object and alter the mower’s path or stop it. It does not prove detection before contact with every animal.
Pivoting blades Can change how a blade reacts when it meets resistance; one 2021 study associated the design with a higher safety index. It is not a universal wildlife-safe rating.
Skid plate May shield or deflect an object under the mower; it was associated with a higher safety index in the 2021 study. It cannot guarantee that a small animal will avoid the blades.
Lift/tip shutoff Stops blade rotation when the mower is lifted or tilted, depending on the model. It does not remove the risk while the mower is on the ground.
Blade-to-casing gap Can reduce access to the cutting parts from some angles. It does not make it safe for a child or pet to approach a running mower.

Are robot mowers safe for children and dogs?

Children and pets should not be on the lawn while the mower is running. Manufacturer guidance says to keep them away despite built-in safety features. Robomow’s RC Series safety guidance tells owners to return the mower to its station until children and pets have left the lawn. Kärcher likewise warns that lift/tip blade deactivation and a casing-to-blade gap still leave a cutting risk and recommends not operating when children or pets are present.

Can a robot lawn mower hurt a dog?

Yes. A dog can approach, paw at or lie in the mower’s path, and a sensor may not stop the machine before contact. Treat the mower as an active cutting tool, not as a toy or a harmless moving appliance. Keep the dog in a separate area until the mower is stopped and secured in its station.

Can children play outside while it is running?

They can play elsewhere only if the mowing area is physically separated and your model’s instructions permit that arrangement. The child must not be able to step, crawl or open a gate into the operating zone. Pause or dock the mower before allowing children onto the lawn; do not rely on a child noticing the machine in time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if a child or pet enters unexpectedly?

  1. Use the mower’s stop, pause or return-to-station control immediately.
  2. Keep people and animals away until the blades have stopped and the mower is secured.
  3. Do not pick up or turn over a mower that may still be running; use the model’s documented shutdown procedure.
  4. Check the manual before restarting, especially if the mower was lifted, tipped or struck.

Should you run a robot mower at night?

If hedgehogs or other vulnerable wildlife may use your garden, daytime operation is the safer choice. The 2024 study’s authors advise restricting mowing to daylight and checking the lawn for animals before starting. Night schedules remove the light that helps an owner see an animal and overlap with the active period of many hedgehogs.

Set the schedule so the mower is parked before dusk and remains docked overnight. A daylight-only schedule does not eliminate wildlife risk: animals can be present during the day, and the studies did not measure every garden species. It is one practical risk reduction that works together with an inspection.

Wildlife other than hedgehogs

The strongest evidence in these tests is for European hedgehogs. The 2021 study also identified leverets, fledglings and amphibians as potentially vulnerable examples, but it did not establish injury rates for each of those animals. Do not assume that a mower proven harmless to one test object is harmless to frogs, nesting birds, young mammals or reptiles.

Before a scheduled run, look through dense grass, leaf piles, flower-bed edges and places where animals shelter. If you find an animal, remove the mower from service and allow the animal to leave or contact a wildlife rehabilitator when appropriate. Avoid moving wild animals unnecessarily, and never place one in the mower’s path to “test” a sensor.

A safer operating routine

Before each mowing session

  1. Confirm that children, dogs, cats and other pets are off the lawn and cannot enter it.
  2. Set the schedule to daylight if wildlife is present or likely to visit.
  3. Walk the area and check for hedgehogs, young animals, amphibians and birds on the ground.
  4. Remove toys, cables, branches and other objects that could cause a collision or make the mower stop unpredictably.
  5. Verify that boundary wires, gates and exclusion zones are installed as the manual specifies.
  6. Check the mower’s casing, wheels and blade area with the machine powered down according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

While it operates

  • Keep the lawn under observation when practical, especially during the first runs after installation or a schedule change.
  • Pause or dock the mower if a person, pet or animal approaches.
  • Do not allow children to chase, ride or handle the mower.
  • Do not interpret a sensor stop as proof that the mower can safely share the lawn with animals.

After a stop or collision

Follow the exact model’s shutdown and inspection procedure. Do not reach under the chassis until the mower is switched off, secured and unable to start automatically. If an animal is injured, keep the mower stopped and contact a qualified wildlife rescue service or veterinarian as appropriate.

How to compare models without overclaiming safety

If you are choosing a mower, compare documented evidence rather than a “wildlife-safe” label used in advertising. The following questions are more useful than a feature list alone:

Buying question What to verify
Was the exact model independently tested? Look for the model number, test date, test method and whether the test used hedgehog dummies, carcasses or another object.
Can it be limited to daylight? Check for daylight scheduling, dusk lockout or a reliable overnight parking setting.
What does the manual say? Read the sections covering children, pets, blade access, lifting, supervision and emergency stops.
What detection is documented? Identify obstacle, lift, tilt and blade-stop systems, but treat them as risk controls rather than guarantees.
How is the lawn divided? Confirm that exclusion zones can keep the mower away from ponds, wildlife shelters, play areas and pet doors.

The two peer-reviewed studies do not agree that technical features consistently predict lower injury probability. Consequently, a model with more sensors is not automatically safer for wildlife than a simpler model. Independent, model-specific results and a usable daylight schedule are stronger decision points than a generic claim.

Is there a certified wildlife-safe label?

The later study proposed a standardized hedgehog test protocol. A 2025 release from the Leibniz Institute described work on hedgehog dummies and standardized testing. Those sources show that test development is continuing; they do not establish a universal consumer certification label or a verified list of models that have passed one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a seller uses terms such as “hedgehog safe,” ask which independent test produced the claim, when it was performed, and whether it covered the exact model and software version. If those details are missing, treat the statement as unverified marketing.

Bottom-line precautions

  • Keep children and pets off the lawn whenever the mower is operating.
  • Use daylight-only schedules where hedgehogs or other vulnerable wildlife may be present.
  • Inspect the lawn before each run.
  • Never assume that obstacle detection sees every small or motionless animal before contact.
  • Read and follow the precise model’s manual, including its stop and lifting procedures.
  • Judge safety claims by independent, model-specific testing and transparent dates—not by a feature name or badge alone.
