Usually, yes—but only when the design lets you replace both earbud batteries and the charging-case battery, and the manufacturer or an approved source sells the parts. A case that opens easily is not enough if the earbuds are glued shut, batteries are soldered in place, or a repair requires so much labor that a new pair costs less. For long-term ownership, Fairbuds provide the clearest documented example; Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 5 is a premium alternative identified as having user-replaceable batteries.

What “replaceable battery” should mean

Wireless earbuds are a system, not just two small batteries. Each bud has a cell, the charging case has another, and the case includes a charging port and the electronics that manage charging. If any of those parts fails, the product can become unusable even when the other components are healthy.

That is why iFixit evaluates access to the earbud batteries, the case battery and the case charging port, along with the availability of parts and instructions. Repairability engineer Carsten Frauenheim summarizes the priorities this way: “The important components when scoring repairability are earbud batteries, case battery, and case charging port.” iFixit’s scorecard defines a repairable product as one where “it should be straightforward to disassemble and replace whatever’s broken, using parts and instructions supplied (or endorsed by the manufacturer).”

In practical terms, distinguish these situations:

  • Fully replaceable system: both buds and the case can be opened without destructive work, compatible cells are sold, and instructions exist.
  • Partly replaceable system: the case battery or charging port is serviceable, but the buds are effectively sealed and disposable.
  • Technically repairable system: a skilled technician can remove glue, soldered connections or welded covers, but the process is risky and labor may approach the price of a new pair.
  • Replaceable only in theory: the housing can be opened, yet the maker supplies no battery, service route or documentation.

The first category is the one that justifies paying a premium for a multi-year ownership plan.

When paying more makes financial sense

The premium is easiest to justify when you expect to keep the earbuds for several years. Battery capacity declines with charge cycles, so a replaceable cell can extend the useful life of otherwise working audio hardware. That benefit disappears if replacement parts are unavailable or if opening the product destroys its seals.

Use this ownership calculation before buying:

  1. Start with the purchase price. Record the actual price for your country and the specific edition; no universal price comparison is established for the models discussed here.
  2. Add the cost of every likely repair. Include an earbud-cell pair, a case battery, adhesive or tools, shipping and professional labor if you will not do the work yourself.
  3. Compare with buying again. If one repair plus labor is close to the price of a replacement set, the financial case is weak even when the product is technically repairable.
  4. Value the features you keep. A battery swap preserves your existing fit, sound and controls. If those features are no longer satisfactory, a new model may be better value regardless of repairability.

Replacement-part prices and new-pair prices are not stated in the available evidence, so there is no honest universal break-even figure. Check current prices and stock for your country before treating a repairable design as a guaranteed saving.

Models with documented evidence

Model Earbud batteries Case battery and port Parts and documentation Repair and sealing considerations Sound, ANC, comfort, codec and connectivity evidence
Fairbuds Standard LIR1054 Li-ion coin cells; sold as a two-pack; replaceable with minor disassembly. Case battery is replaceable; iFixit describes undoing a single screw for the case. Replacement cells are sold and the design is built around replacement parts. iFixit awarded 10/10 for repairability in 2024. Minor disassembly and no special tools are described by iFixit. The evidence does not establish post-repair water-resistance performance. Not stated in the cited evidence.
Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 TechRadar identifies the earbuds as having user-replaceable batteries; the cited material does not specify the cell type or whether every battery in the system is user-replaceable. Case-battery and port access are not stated in the cited material. Presented by TechRadar as a premium earbud whose long-term value includes replaceability; specific official part listings and manuals are not stated. Exact procedure, tools and post-repair sealing are not stated. TechRadar’s cited description establishes the premium positioning, not comparative measurements for sound, ANC, comfort, codecs or connectivity.
Google Pixel Buds 2a Earbuds are nearly impossible to open without damage, according to iFixit. Case battery and USB port are easily replaced, according to iFixit. Case serviceability is documented; a practical earbud-battery replacement path is not. Opening the buds can cause damage, making labor and reliability concerns significant. Not stated in the cited evidence.
Beoplay Eleven Batteries are soldered under glue, according to iFixit. Case details are not stated in the cited material. The maker supplies no service manual or replacement parts, according to iFixit. Glue and solder make the repair destructive or specialist-level; replacement-part access is a major barrier. Not stated in the cited evidence.

This comparison shows why “the case is repairable” is an incomplete buying claim. Pixel Buds 2a solve two important case failures yet leave the earbud cells almost inaccessible. Beoplay Eleven has the opposite problem of a premium product with no documented parts or service route. Fairbuds are the only model in the evidence with a clearly documented replacement path for both buds and the case.

Why Fairbuds are the benchmark

iFixit gave Fairbuds a 10/10 repairability score in 2024. The earbud cells are standard LIR1054 lithium-ion coin batteries, sold as a two-pack rather than as a proprietary sealed module. iFixit reports that replacing them requires minor disassembly and no special tools. The case battery is also replaceable; the case can be opened by undoing a single screw.

Those details matter more than a high score by itself. A standard cell gives you a recognizable specification to verify when ordering. A two-pack matches the two earbuds, while a separately replaceable case battery addresses the component that is often overlooked. The simple case access also reduces the chance that labor will erase the financial advantage of repair.

Fairbuds are therefore the strongest documented choice for someone who prioritizes long ownership and is comfortable performing a modest repair. Confirm that LIR1054 replacement cells are in stock and compatible with the exact Fairbuds generation you plan to buy; availability can vary by country and over time.

A premium alternative: Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5

TechRadar identifies the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 as a premium earbud with user-replaceable batteries and treats that feature as central to its long-term value argument. This makes it relevant when sound and premium features matter as much as serviceability.

The available evidence does not establish the cell format, case-battery access, official part numbers, repair instructions, water-resistance behavior after opening, or comparative figures for audio and wireless features. Treat “user-replaceable” as a reason to investigate, not as proof that every battery in the charging system is equally easy to change. Before purchase, ask Sennheiser or the seller for the exact replacement route and parts availability in your region.

Repair difficulty can change durability

Even a successful battery replacement can alter the product. An iFixit Galaxy Buds repair guide lists opening tools, a vise, pliers, replacement batteries and adhesive. It warns that splash resistance will be reduced after repair. The warning illustrates a general risk: the original adhesive and seals are part of the product’s protection, and reopening the housing may prevent you from restoring them to factory performance.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Plan a repair around these realities:

  • Tools: tiny housings may need more than a screwdriver. For some Galaxy Buds work, iFixit lists a vise and pliers in addition to opening tools.
  • Consumables: replacement adhesive may be required after the original seal is disturbed.
  • Skill and time: glued or soldered cells increase the chance of damaging microphones, drivers, flex cables or the housing.
  • Water exposure: assume reduced splash resistance unless the manufacturer explicitly documents resealing and a post-repair test.
  • Labor: obtain a written quote from a repair shop. If labor plus parts approaches a new pair, replacement is usually the rational choice.

How to evaluate a model before buying

  1. Verify both locations. Look for explicit statements that the left and right earbud batteries and the charging-case battery are replaceable. “Replaceable case battery” alone is not sufficient.
  2. Identify the exact cell or part number. Fairbuds use LIR1054 cells; other models may use different formats. Never assume two products with similar housings share a battery.
  3. Check official availability. Confirm that the manufacturer, an endorsed supplier or a reputable regional distributor lists the parts. A teardown without parts for sale does not provide a practical repair path.
  4. Read the service instructions. Prefer instructions that show non-destructive opening, required tools and replacement adhesive. Missing documentation raises the skill and labor risk.
  5. Ask about sealing after repair. Find out whether splash or dust resistance is tested again. If no answer is available, treat the repaired product as less protected.
  6. Price the complete job. Include cells, shipping, tools, adhesive and labor, then compare that total with a new pair available in your market.
  7. Compare the features you actually use. Check sound signature, active-noise cancellation, comfort, codec support and connectivity separately. The cited repairability evidence does not provide like-for-like values for those features.
  8. Review warranty terms. Opening the housing can affect warranty coverage. Read the terms for the exact model and region before attempting a self-repair.

Can you replace the battery in earbuds you already own?

Sometimes, but the model-specific repair design decides the answer. Start by identifying whether the failure is battery-related: a bud that runs for much less time than its mate is a different case from one with a damaged charging port or water intrusion. Then locate an official service option or a documented teardown for the exact model.

For Pixel Buds 2a, iFixit says the case battery and USB port are easily replaced, but the earbuds are nearly impossible to open without damage. A case repair can therefore be sensible while an earbud-cell repair may not be. For Beoplay Eleven, soldered cells under glue and the absence of service manuals or replacement parts make a consumer repair a poor proposition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you proceed with a difficult repair, assume that the original water protection may no longer apply and budget for adhesive and specialist labor. Stop when the estimate approaches the cost of a new pair; keeping an old housing is not a saving if the repair is likely to fail.

Feature and ownership trade-offs

Replaceability is one buying criterion, not a substitute for acceptable audio or reliable daily use. A repairable model that is uncomfortable or lacks the connectivity features you need can be a worse purchase than a sealed model that you will actually use for years.

Conversely, a sealed premium model may become expensive to own once one cell fails, especially when the maker offers no parts. The Beoplay Eleven example shows how soldering and glue can turn an otherwise high-end product into a disposable one from a service perspective. The Pixel Buds 2a example shows that easy case repairs do not solve the principal battery limitation if the buds cannot be opened.

For a long ownership period, prioritize this order: access to both bud batteries, access to the case battery and port, obtainable parts, documented procedure, acceptable post-repair sealing, then the sound and connectivity features that matter to you. Adjust that order if your usage makes a feature—such as active-noise cancellation or a particular codec—non-negotiable, but do not let a feature list hide an unserviceable battery system.

Who should pay the premium?

Choose replaceable batteries when

  • You intend to keep the earbuds for several years.
  • Both earbud cells and the case battery have a documented replacement route.
  • Correct cells are sold in your country and you can obtain tools or affordable labor.
  • You are willing to accept a modest repair process and possible loss of splash resistance.
  • The product’s sound, comfort and connectivity already meet your needs, so extending its life has real value.

Choose a cheaper or sealed model when

  • Only the case opens and the earbuds are glued shut.
  • The manufacturer provides no replacement parts, service manual or endorsed repair path.
  • Repair requires destructive work or specialist labor close to the cost of a new pair.
  • You expect to replace the earbuds soon for feature or fit reasons anyway.

On the documented evidence, Fairbuds are the clearest match for the first group. Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 is worth investigating for buyers who want a premium option, but verify the complete battery and service details before paying extra. Models such as Pixel Buds 2a and Beoplay Eleven demonstrate why partial or theoretical replaceability should not be valued like a fully serviceable design.
