Some motorcycle smart accessories are built for rain, but “waterproof” is not a category-wide guarantee. Protection depends on the exact model, its complete IP code, the condition of its seals and connectors, and the exposure you give it. An IPX5 or IPX6 device is tested against water jets; IPX7 is tested for temporary immersion; IPX8 covers continuous immersion only under conditions set by the manufacturer. None of those ratings automatically authorises pressure-washing.
Before riding, read the model-specific manual, close every port and connector cover, and treat mounts, cable entries and damaged gaskets as potential leak paths. A device with no liquid permission, such as Dainese Smart GO, must be kept dry rather than “tested” in the rain.
What “waterproof” means for motorcycle electronics
Manufacturers normally describe water resistance with an IP code defined by IEC 60529. The first character addresses solids and dust; the second character addresses water. An X means that no protection level for that part of the test code is stated. Thus, IPX7 tells you about water exposure but says nothing about dust protection, while IP67 states both dust-tight protection (6) and a water test (7).
The water number describes a particular laboratory exposure, not every situation a motorcycle creates. Rain, spray from a vehicle, a hose, a pressure washer, condensation inside a cold enclosure and water running along a cable can all load an enclosure differently. The enclosure also has to remain intact: a cracked housing, pinched seal or loose charging flap means the original rating no longer describes the installed unit.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Jets and immersion are different tests
IEC-derived guidance separates water jets from immersion. IPX5 is a water-jet test, and IPX6 is a more powerful-jet test. IPX7 is a temporary-immersion test; Sony’s current support guidance describes it as immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes under controlled conditions. IPX8 is continuous immersion under manufacturer-defined conditions, so the permitted depth and duration must come from that product’s documentation. A higher-looking immersion number does not turn the enclosure into a pressure-wash target.
Some products carry more than one water class, or publish separate instructions for cleaning. Use the exact wording in the manual rather than assuming that the largest number covers every exposure. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2024 explanation of IPX7, IPX8, IPX9 and water-jet classes is useful for understanding why the tests are not interchangeable.
Can you ride in the rain with a GPS, intercom or dashcam?
Usually, yes, when the manufacturer specifies a rain-capable rating and you install the device as instructed. The following examples show why the model number matters.

| Product | Published protection | Typical use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interphone SYNC70 | IP66, with anti-rain touch behaviour | GPS, TPMS and dual-camera smart display | IP66 addresses powerful water jets; it does not by itself establish immersion protection. |
| Interphone U-COM 2R | IP67 | Helmet intercom with phone/GPS audio | IP67 is temporary immersion under test conditions. Ports, seals and cable openings must remain intact. |
| BMW Motorrad Navigator V | IPX7; waterproof 12 V plug connection | Dedicated motorcycle navigation | IPX7 is not a pressure-wash rating. Check the cradle and plug connection. |
| Dainese Smart GO | No liquid exposure permitted in its FAQ | Wearable safety electronics | Do not submerge, rinse under running water or intentionally expose it to liquids. |
Interphone says the U-COM 2R is “IP67 certified,” protecting against rain, dust and harsh weather. Its published communication range is up to 300 metres and talk time up to 30 hours; those performance figures do not change the water limits. BMW describes the ConnectedRide Com P1 as usable in snow, rain and even muddy enduro conditions, but that statement applies to that product and its installation guidance, not to every BMW accessory.
Rain on a display is not the same as water inside it
A motorcycle display can remain readable and responsive in rain while still requiring careful handling. Anti-rain touch behaviour helps the screen interpret wet touches; it does not prove that a damaged USB socket, open vent or poorly seated mount is sealed. A dashcam may tolerate spray on its lens while its memory-card door or rear connector remains vulnerable. Assess the whole assembly, including the supplied cradle, power lead and any add-on camera or microphone.
What IP rating do you need?
Choose the rating by the exposure you realistically need, then verify the installation details.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- For ordinary rain and road spray: Prefer a product whose manufacturer explicitly permits motorcycle use in bad weather and publishes at least a water-jet or immersion test. IPX5 or IPX6 addresses jets; IPX7 adds a controlled temporary-immersion test.
- For accidental dunking: IPX7 can be relevant, but only for the stated test conditions. It does not cover high-pressure jets, hot water or prolonged submersion beyond the manufacturer’s limits.
- For dust-heavy or muddy routes: Look for the complete code, not just the water character. The first digit matters for dust ingress, and cleaning instructions still govern.
- For a device that must be washed: Follow the manual’s cleaning method. If it does not authorise concentrated jets, use a gentle, indirect rinse or a damp cloth as directed; never substitute a pressure washer because the device has an IP number.
- For wearable safety modules: Treat “no liquid exposure” language as decisive. A high rating on a different accessory cannot be used as evidence for the wearable.
Also compare vibration and temperature limits, mount and gasket design, connector sealing, permitted cleaning methods and warranty exclusions for liquid damage. There is no independent cross-brand failure-rate statistic that establishes one manufacturer as universally more reliable, so published specifications and installation instructions are the defensible basis for a purchase decision.
Where motorcycle accessories actually let water in
Charging sockets and removable plugs
Charging flaps are opened frequently and can collect grit. BMW’s guidance for the ConnectedRide Com U1 is explicit: in rain, keep the charging socket firmly closed so water cannot enter. A flap that looks closed but is folded, contaminated or misaligned may not seal.
Cable glands and strain-relief points
Power and camera cables create a path through an otherwise sealed housing. Water can travel along the cable sheath by gravity or capillary action and reach a connector. Use the supplied gland, grommet and strain relief; do not enlarge a hole, remove a rubber boot or leave a splice exposed without an enclosure rated for that use.

Cradles, mounts and gaskets
A navigation unit may have a sealed body but rely on a cradle and 12 V plug for the vehicle connection. Inspect the mating surfaces each time you refit it. A twisted gasket, missing latch or hairline crack can defeat the enclosure’s intended protection.
Microphone, speaker and ventilation openings
Acoustic membranes and vents need to pass sound or equalise pressure, so they are not equivalent to a solid wall. Do not probe them with a tool or blast them with compressed air or a pressure nozzle. Let trapped water drain naturally and follow the manual’s drying instructions.

Before the ride
- Identify the exact model. Record the complete IP code and read the current manual or support page. Do not rely on a retailer’s generic “waterproof” label.
- Inspect the enclosure. Look for cracked plastic, lifted screen edges, distorted rubber, corrosion or a loose battery/port cover. Replace damaged parts before exposing the unit to rain.
- Close every opening. Seat charging flaps, memory-card doors, microphone covers and rubber plugs fully. Remove grit that could hold a seal open, using the manufacturer’s approved method.
- Prepare the vehicle connection. Confirm that the supplied 12 V plug, cradle and cable gland are locked. Route the cable with a downward loop so water cannot run straight into the connector.
- Check the mount. Tighten fasteners to the specified setting, verify that the unit cannot wobble and make sure the mount does not pinch a gasket or cable.
During the ride
- Stay within the tested exposure. Rain and road spray are not evidence that the unit tolerates a jet. If water begins pooling around a port, stop in a safe place and shield or disconnect it as the manual directs.
- Keep covers closed while powered. Do not charge through an open socket in rain unless the manufacturer specifically provides a sealed charging arrangement for that use.
- Watch for condensation. Fogging under a lens or screen indicates moisture and a temperature or sealing issue. Do not heat the unit aggressively; reduce exposure and follow the service guidance.
- Do not operate a non-rated device in liquid conditions. Dainese states that Smart GO must not be submerged, washed under running water or intentionally exposed to liquids because water can irreversibly damage its electronics. Wear a rain layer over a non-waterproof garment and keep the module dry.
After a wet ride
- Power down if required. Follow the product’s shutdown instruction before disconnecting or opening a cover.
- Wipe the exterior. Use the approved soft cloth. Do not force water through seams or ports while cleaning road salt and mud.
- Open covers only somewhere dry. If a port must be opened, move indoors or under dry shelter first. Keep the unit oriented so droplets cannot run inward.
- Dry before charging. Allow the enclosure, connector and cable end to dry completely. Charging a damp connector can cause corrosion or an electrical fault.
- Inspect again. Check for a lifted gasket, cracked housing, green or white corrosion, persistent fogging or an intermittent connection. Stop using the accessory and contact the manufacturer if any of these appear.
Why pressure washers are unsafe, even for IP-rated devices
A pressure washer concentrates energy into a narrow jet and can drive water past a flap, membrane or cable seal that survives ordinary rain. Aoocci specifically warns against directing concentrated jets at displays, connectors or seals. The same caution applies to a hose nozzle held close to the unit: distance, angle and water temperature can change the exposure dramatically.

Use the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure instead. In the absence of a specific allowance, remove loose dirt gently, use a damp cloth, keep the stream indirect and avoid spraying the screen edges, buttons, microphone openings, charging socket and cable entries. Never assume that IPX7 immersion permission means that a high-pressure jet is acceptable; the two tests address different stresses.
Condensation, storage and long-term care
Rain protection does not eliminate condensation. A warm accessory moved into cold, humid air can develop moisture inside or under a lens, especially if a seal is already compromised. Dry the exterior, place the device in a dry, ventilated location and allow it to reach ambient temperature before opening ports or charging. Do not seal a wet unit in an airtight bag, and do not use a hair dryer or heater that can deform plastics or damage batteries.
Store non-rated systems such as Smart GO in a dry, ventilated place and follow the maker’s shutdown and storage instructions. Keep removable mounts and cables clean, avoid folding seals sharply and periodically examine accessories that spend months on the motorcycle. Liquid damage may be excluded from warranty coverage even when the product has an IP rating, particularly if the housing has been opened or modified.
What to do when water has entered
- Disconnect safely: stop charging and turn the accessory off if it responds normally. If there is heat, smoke or an electrical smell, move away from the motorcycle and follow the battery and emergency guidance.
- Do not test repeatedly: repeated powering can turn a temporary moisture problem into a short-circuit or corrosion damage.
- Document the condition: photograph the housing, seals, connectors and any condensation before cleaning or opening anything.
- Use authorised service: contact the manufacturer or an approved repair centre, especially for sealed batteries, safety electronics or a unit that remains fogged after drying.
- Replace compromised seals: an enclosure cannot retain its original protection after a cracked case, cut gasket or modified cable entry without the correct replacement parts and service procedure.
A practical decision checklist
- Do I have the exact model’s complete IP code, rather than a generic product-family claim?
- Does the code cover jets, immersion or both, and what conditions does the manual specify?
- Are the charging port, cradle, cable gland and removable mount sealed in my actual installation?
- Are the housing and gaskets free from cracks, distortion and grit?
- Does the manual permit the way I plan to clean the device?
- What does the warranty say about liquid, condensation, pressure washing or modified wiring?
- Is this a non-rated wearable that must stay under a rain layer instead of on the exposed motorcycle?
If any answer is unknown, treat the accessory as less water-resistant until the manufacturer confirms the limit. The safest approach is to use only the tested exposure, keep every opening closed, avoid concentrated jets and dry the system fully before charging.
