Sometimes—but not by definition. Information-technology stocks can lose more than a diversified market portfolio or defensive sectors when interest rates rise, valuations reset, technology spending slows, or investors discover that many holdings share the same exposure. In another period, the same sector can outperform and show lower risk than a different group of companies. The answer depends on what “riskier” means, the period measured, the benchmark, the geography, and whether you own a diversified technology fund or a single company.

There is no universal current statistic proving that IT is permanently the riskiest sector. A useful decision therefore starts with a defined risk measure and a like-for-like comparison, then checks how much technology exposure your whole portfolio already contains.

What “riskier” means for an IT stock

Risk is not one number. A stock may be riskier because its price moves more widely, because losses are deeper, because its earnings are less predictable, or because it can fall at exactly the wrong time for your financial goal. Before comparing sectors, choose the risk dimension and the lookback period.

Price volatility

Annualized volatility summarizes how widely returns have fluctuated over a stated period. It describes the path of returns, not the direction: two sectors can have the same volatility even if one delivered a positive return and the other lost money. Use the same return frequency, currency and dates for every sector.

Beta and correlation

Beta measures how a sector has moved relative to a chosen benchmark. A beta above one has historically indicated larger moves than that benchmark; a beta below one has indicated smaller moves. Correlation asks a different question: whether the sector tends to move with the rest of your portfolio. A holding that looks moderate on its own can still add substantial risk if it rises and falls alongside everything else you own.

Downside deviation and maximum drawdown

Downside deviation focuses on harmful volatility rather than all fluctuations. Maximum drawdown records the largest peak-to-trough decline in the selected period. Neither predicts the next loss, but both show how a past decline could have affected an investor who needed cash during that interval.

Business and valuation risk

Market data should be paired with fundamentals. Compare valuation sensitivity, earnings variability, leverage, profitability, competitive position and balance-sheet strength. A profitable, cash-generating company with modest debt is a different risk from an unprofitable high-growth company, even when both are classified as IT.

Why technology can be riskier in some periods

Concentration creates shared shocks

FINRA defines concentration risk as “the risk of amplified losses that may occur from having a large portion of your holdings in a particular investment, asset class or market segment relative to your overall portfolio.” A technology-heavy portfolio can contain dozens of tickers yet remain concentrated if those businesses respond similarly to interest rates, corporate spending, regulation or a new technological threat.

Concentration can occur at two levels:

  • Sector concentration: a large share of the portfolio is exposed to IT compared with other sectors and asset classes.
  • Issuer concentration: a few companies account for a large share of the technology allocation, directly or through fund holdings.

When the same shock affects many holdings at once, diversification among names in that sector may provide less protection than expected.

Interest rates can reset growth valuations

Many technology valuations depend on profits expected far into the future. When market interest rates rise, investors often demand a higher return for bearing risk. The present value assigned to distant cash flows can fall, putting pressure on richly valued growth companies even before their reported earnings change. The effect is not automatic or identical for every IT company, but it explains why valuation-sensitive technology groups can move sharply during rate-driven repricing.

Technology spending is cyclical

Businesses can delay hardware purchases, software projects or upgrades when economic conditions weaken. A company selling into discretionary corporate budgets may then face slower revenue growth, lower margins or a revised outlook. Companies with recurring contracts, essential infrastructure roles or strong cash reserves may be better positioned than firms dependent on a small number of large projects; classification alone does not reveal that difference.

Innovation and obsolescence

Competitive advantage in IT can change quickly. A product can be displaced by a new architecture, open-source alternative, platform decision or regulatory requirement. The same innovation that expands one company’s market can reduce another’s pricing power. Investors must therefore assess the durability of a company’s technology, customer switching costs and ability to fund research and development, rather than treating the sector label as a guarantee of growth.

Regulation and policy exposure

Privacy rules, competition enforcement, export controls, procurement standards and other regulations can affect technology companies differently. A portfolio concentrated in one business model or geography may react more strongly to a policy change than a broad-market portfolio with less correlated exposure.

Why IT is not always the riskiest sector

Risk rankings change with the cycle. A technology sector can be less volatile than another sector during a period when its earnings are resilient and investor expectations are modest. Conversely, sectors that appear defensive can experience their own sharp declines when a specific economic, credit or commodity shock arrives. Calling one sector “the riskiest” without naming a metric and dates hides these changes.

The relevant comparison is also the portfolio you could actually own. A diversified technology fund may spread exposure across many companies and business models. A single high-growth stock can have far greater company-specific risk, regardless of the average volatility of the IT sector. A broad-market index may include technology as one component, reducing the effect of a technology-only drawdown but not eliminating it.

How to compare IT with other sectors

Use one benchmark, one geography, one currency and one lookback period. Compare sector indexes or funds on the same basis, and state whether figures are total returns, price returns or estimates. Then examine both market statistics and business fundamentals.

Comparison target Questions to answer Why the result can differ
Information technology How volatile are returns, how concentrated are the largest holdings, and how sensitive are valuations and earnings to rates and technology cycles? IT contains companies with very different profitability, debt, growth expectations and competitive positions.
Utilities Does the period show lower or higher volatility, and how does the sector respond to rates and financing conditions? A sector-level average can conceal substantial differences among companies and regulated markets.
Consumer staples How do downside deviation, drawdown and earnings variability compare with IT over the same dates? Defensive characteristics are historical tendencies, not protection from every loss.
Healthcare How do valuation, policy sensitivity, profitability and correlation with your holdings compare? Healthcare combines mature businesses with companies whose outcomes depend on research or approvals.
Financials Compare beta, drawdown, leverage and earnings sensitivity using the same benchmark. Financial risks can be driven by credit, rates and regulation rather than technology spending.
Energy Compare volatility and earnings variability, while noting how closely returns track the underlying commodity cycle. Commodity-linked results can create a different pattern of gains and losses from IT.
Broad-market index Measure IT’s volatility, beta, drawdown and correlation against the diversified market portfolio. The index includes multiple sectors and may already have a substantial technology weight.

Do not select the “winner” from one statistic. A sector with lower volatility can still have a severe drawdown, and a sector with higher volatility can deliver better long-term results. The purpose of the comparison is to understand the trade-off you are accepting.

A practical audit of your technology exposure

1. Add direct and indirect holdings

List individual technology stocks, sector funds, broad-market funds, employer plans and other accounts. Include the technology companies held inside each fund. The percentage shown for a single fund is not your total exposure if the same companies appear in several funds.

2. Check overlap among the largest holdings

Identify the biggest positions across accounts and add their weights. A portfolio can look diversified by ticker count while a handful of large companies dominate its outcome. Record both the percentage invested in IT and the percentage represented by its largest issuers.

3. Match the allocation to your time horizon

Investor.gov explains that asset allocation depends on time horizon and risk tolerance. The SEC’s beginners’ guide also warns that stock volatility makes stocks very risky in the short term. Money needed soon for a known goal has less capacity to absorb a technology drawdown than money invested for a long horizon.

4. Test a loss against your actual goal

Ask what would happen if the technology allocation fell enough to delay a purchase, reduce an emergency reserve or force a sale. This is a more useful test than asking whether a sector is “safe.” If a plausible loss would disrupt the goal, reduce concentration or increase the portion held in other assets according to your plan.

5. Compare your exposure with your risk tolerance

Risk tolerance is your ability and willingness to accept losses. A high tolerance does not remove concentration risk; it only changes which allocation may be practical. Write down the maximum decline you could accept without abandoning the plan, then choose an allocation that you can maintain through a bad period.

Diversification: what it does and cannot do

The SEC states: “The practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk is known as diversification.” Investor.gov likewise describes spreading money among investments and industry sectors as a way to reduce risk. Diversifying across sectors, company sizes, geographies and asset classes can reduce the damage from a technology-specific shock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diversification does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. A broad market can fall, and technology may remain a large component of a diversified index. It also cannot remove risks shared by many assets, such as a severe economic contraction or a global market sell-off. Its benefit is reducing dependence on any one sector, issuer or type of event.

Choosing between a technology fund and a single stock

Diversified technology fund

A fund can spread company-specific risk across holdings, but check its mandate, largest positions, country exposure, fees and overlap with your other funds. A fund that tracks a narrow theme may be much more concentrated than a broad IT index.

Single high-growth company

One company adds risks that sector statistics cannot capture: product failure, management decisions, customer loss, financing needs, litigation and competitive displacement. Its valuation may also depend on aggressive growth assumptions. Treat it as a separate issuer-risk decision, not as a proxy for the whole sector.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using a different time period for each sector: align the dates and frequency before comparing volatility or drawdown.
  • Confusing past volatility with future certainty: historical measures describe what happened, not what must happen next.
  • Counting funds instead of exposures: inspect top holdings and add duplicated positions across accounts.
  • Equating growth with safety: examine profitability, leverage, cash generation and valuation as well as revenue growth.
  • Reacting to a headline by abandoning a plan: use your written allocation and rebalance rules rather than an unplanned sale.
  • Ignoring the goal’s deadline: a long-term average cannot protect money required in the short term.

Questions to ask before adding more IT

  1. Which risk am I accepting: price volatility, a deep drawdown, issuer failure, valuation compression or correlated exposure?
  2. What benchmark, geography, currency and dates will I use to compare IT with other sectors?
  3. How much technology exposure do I already have through funds and retirement accounts?
  4. What share is concentrated in the largest companies?
  5. Are the companies profitable and financially resilient, or are their valuations dependent on distant growth?
  6. Could a plausible technology-sector loss force me to sell or miss a financial goal?
  7. What rule will determine future purchases, rebalancing or reductions?

These questions turn “Are IT stocks riskier?” into a measurable portfolio decision. They also make clear why two investors can reasonably choose different technology allocations: their holdings, time horizons, goals and tolerance for loss are not the same.
