Humanoid robots can be autonomous, remotely controlled, or both at once. The deciding factor is not the robot’s appearance but who has control authority for a particular task. Onboard software may plan a route and keep the robot balanced, while a remote operator chooses how to grasp an unfamiliar object. In another demonstration, a person may control every movement. A third system may complete a rehearsed routine without continuous human input but request help when it encounters something unexpected.

That makes “Is someone secretly operating it?” the wrong yes-or-no question. Ask instead which parts of the task the robot performed itself, how often a person intervened, and what happened when conditions changed. Those boundaries distinguish genuine autonomy from teleoperation, assisted control and a carefully staged demonstration.

Autonomy is a task property, not a permanent robot label

Calling a humanoid robot “autonomous” does not mean that every capability works independently in every environment. Autonomy is usually scoped to a behavior, a task, an environment and a level of supervision. A robot might walk to a marked location by itself, for example, while a human selects the route, controls the hands and handles recovery if it falls. Another robot could converse without a live operator but rely on remote control for physical manipulation.

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission described recent artificial-intelligence advances as increasing the autonomy of humanoid robots and allowing more complex interaction with people and their surroundings. That is a statement about growing capability, not a universal autonomy percentage. No single figure describes the whole industry because robots differ in sensors, software, training environments, safety policies and communication links.

When evaluating a claim, define the unit of autonomy precisely:

  • Planning: Did software choose the next action or did a person issue each command?
  • Control: Did the robot generate joint motions and balance corrections onboard, or did an operator stream them?
  • Perception: Did the robot interpret the scene itself, or did a human decide what it was seeing?
  • Manipulation: Were grasping, force and hand placement autonomous, assisted or directly controlled?
  • Recovery: Could the system detect and resolve an error, or did a person take over?
  • Scope: Was the behavior learned for one known setup or expected to generalize to new objects and layouts?

A demonstration can therefore be autonomous in one layer and human-in-the-loop in another. Good reporting names those layers instead of treating “autonomous” as an all-or-nothing status.

Three control modes used in humanoid robots

Autonomous operation

In autonomous operation, onboard perception and control systems select actions without continuous human motion commands. Cameras, depth sensors, force sensors and joint encoders provide observations. Software interprets those observations, chooses a behavior and sends commands to the motors. Low-level controllers stabilize the body, regulate foot placement and limit forces even when a higher-level planner is deciding what to do.

Autonomy works best when the task and environment are constrained or extensively trained. Examples include following a mapped route, repeating a pick-and-place sequence with known objects, maintaining balance while walking, or executing a prevalidated motion. “Autonomous” in this context means the robot can run the specified behavior without a person driving every joint; it does not guarantee that the system can improvise safely in an unfamiliar home, warehouse or public space.

Teleoperation

Teleoperation puts a remote human in the command loop. The operator may use a joystick, a set of hand controllers, a motion-capture suit, a virtual-reality interface or a higher-level control panel. Depending on the system, the person can command individual joints, body poses, hand trajectories or task-level actions such as “pick up that box.” The robot still performs some local stabilization, collision checking or motor control, but the operator supplies the essential decisions.

Teleoperation is valuable when the environment is unknown, changes quickly or carries serious consequences. A person can recognize an unusual object, infer intent from a human nearby and adapt faster than a narrowly trained policy. The 2024 IEEE survey on humanoid-robot teleoperation calls teleoperation crucial for operating robots in challenging environments. It also identifies robot complexity, unstructured settings and communication limits as major challenges.

Hybrid control and assistive autonomy

Hybrid control combines a human decision-maker with onboard assistance. The operator might indicate where to go while software plans collision-free footsteps, or move a hand toward an object while an impedance controller maintains a safe grip. The robot can filter commands, stabilize balance, avoid forbidden areas and execute learned subroutines. In other designs, the human sets a goal and the robot acts independently until confidence drops or a safety rule is triggered.

This arrangement is often called assistive autonomy or human-in-the-loop control. It is practical because humans are good at judgment under uncertainty, while computers are good at high-frequency corrections and repeatable calculations. Toyota’s 2024 discussion of remote intervention makes the same point: remote human control can handle unknown environments and objects that autonomous robots are not yet good at interpreting.

How the modes compare

Aspect Autonomous Teleoperated Hybrid or assistive
Primary decision-maker Onboard software Remote operator Shared; authority changes by task or confidence
Human input Setup, goals or occasional supervision Continuous or frequent commands Goals, corrections, approvals or takeovers
Best environment Known, structured and repeatable Unknown, dynamic or high-consequence Mostly routine with occasional uncertainty
Communication dependence Low during execution, unless remote monitoring is required High; latency and link reliability directly affect control Variable; critical actions may require a live link
Strength Repeatability and operation at scale Human judgment and rapid adaptation Computer precision plus human judgment
Main weakness Unexpected objects, edge cases and poor generalization Operator workload, latency and limited scalability Ambiguous authority and complex safety design
Typical recovery Preprogrammed fallback or stop Operator diagnoses and corrects the problem Robot detects low confidence and requests intervention

The same physical robot can move between these columns within one job. A warehouse task could begin autonomously, switch to teleoperation for an unfamiliar package and return to an autonomous routine after the operator places it in a known fixture.

Why humanoids need human supervision

Unknown objects and unstructured spaces

Humanoid form factors are intended for spaces built for people, but those spaces contain clutter, reflective surfaces, fragile items and objects that do not appear in training data. A person can identify that a soft bag should be grasped differently from a rigid box, or that a blocked doorway requires a different route. A policy trained on a limited collection of examples may not make that distinction reliably.

Dexterous manipulation

Walking is only one part of useful humanoid work. Hands must locate contact points, regulate force and respond to an object slipping or deforming. Small errors can damage an item or destabilize the entire body. A remote operator can provide corrective movements while local controllers keep the arm smooth and protect joints. This is a common reason a video that looks autonomous may still have a person controlling the hands.

Safety and recovery

Stopping is not the same as recovering. A robot may detect that its balance is deteriorating, but deciding whether to step sideways, release an object or ask a nearby person to move can require context. Hybrid systems let software enforce hard limits while a human handles unusual situations. The design must still specify who has authority to stop the robot, how an emergency stop works and what the robot does if communication fails.

Latency and operator workload

Teleoperation is constrained by the time between an operator’s command, network transmission, robot action and returned sensor feedback. Delays make precise manipulation difficult and can cause a person to overcorrect. Video quality, occlusion and limited camera viewpoints add to the burden. The IEEE survey identifies communication limits as a central teleoperation issue, so a remote-control claim should be evaluated together with the interface and network conditions, not just the robot’s motors.

How to tell whether a demonstration is really autonomous

Marketing videos often show the successful portion of a task. Before accepting an autonomy claim, ask for the following details:

  1. What was the exact task boundary? “Autonomous warehouse work” is vague; “picked a known bin from a fixed shelf” is testable.
  2. Who issued the goal? A person may have selected the object, route, grasp point or next step even if the robot executed the motion.
  3. Was there continuous teleoperation? Look for hand-controller inputs, motion-capture equipment, a control console or an unseen operator supplying commands.
  4. What did the robot control locally? Balance, collision avoidance and trajectory smoothing can be autonomous while high-level decisions remain human-controlled.
  5. Could a person intervene? The presence of a safety operator does not prove that the robot was driven, but the demonstration should say whether intervention occurred and when.
  6. How many attempts and environments were used? A rehearsed routine in one room does not establish performance on new layouts or objects.
  7. What happened after an error? A pause for human recovery, a restart or a hidden edit changes the meaning of “fully autonomous.”

These questions separate autonomous execution from autonomous problem solving. They also expose partial autonomy: the robot may plan and walk independently but rely on a person for dialogue, manipulation or recovery.

Can humanoid robots learn from remote operators?

Yes. Teleoperation is not only a way to deploy a robot; it can also generate training data. An operator demonstrates poses, trajectories, object interactions and successful recoveries. Machine-learning systems can use those demonstrations for imitation learning, in which a policy learns to reproduce the relationship between observations and actions.

OmniH2O, described in a 2025 paper published through the Proceedings of Machine Learning Research, reports a system that “enables full autonomy by learning from teleoperated demonstrations or integrating with frontier models such as GPT-4.” The phrase describes a development route, not proof that every behavior is autonomous in every setting. Demonstrations still need to cover the situations the resulting policy will encounter, and safety mechanisms remain necessary when the policy is uncertain.

The IROS work associated with OmniH2O describes human-operated data collection for imitation learning. In practice, the workflow can look like this:

  1. An operator performs a task through a teleoperation interface while the robot records camera, force, joint and command data.
  2. The collected episodes are cleaned and aligned so the system can associate observations with actions.
  3. An imitation policy is trained to produce similar actions from sensor input.
  4. The policy is evaluated in simulation or controlled tests, with safety limits and human supervision.
  5. Operators handle failures and may add corrective demonstrations, expanding the policy’s coverage.

This creates a useful progression: a person first shows the robot how to act, software learns a repeatable portion of the behavior, and a human remains available for cases outside the learned distribution. Training from demonstrations therefore does not mean the robot is secretly teleoperated during every later run; it means remote control supplied examples used to build a future autonomous policy.

What current evidence says about real systems

Several independent descriptions support the spectrum rather than a single category. The 2024 IEEE survey treats teleoperation as an important way to operate humanoids in difficult environments and discusses assistive approaches. Toyota’s 2024 account explicitly combines autonomous behavior with remote human intervention for unknown environments and objects. OmniH2O demonstrates teleoperation and autonomy, including learning from demonstrations. The USCC’s 2024 analysis describes increasing autonomy but does not claim that humanoids have eliminated human supervision.

Those sources support a careful conclusion: both modes are real, and hybrid control is a practical engineering choice. They do not justify a market-wide claim such as “humanoids are mostly autonomous” or “all impressive demonstrations are secretly controlled.” Each system must be assessed by task, environment, interface and intervention record.

Communication and security are part of the control question

A remotely controlled robot depends on a communication path and an interface. That path can introduce latency, packet loss, authentication failures or a complete loss of control. Operators and system designers need a defined safe state: for example, controlled braking, a posture that reduces fall risk, or an immediate motor stop. A remote link should not be treated as an invisible implementation detail because it can determine whether the robot is usable and safe.

Security is equally important. Fraunhofer reported a Bluetooth vulnerability that allowed complete remote control of the tested Unitree G1 software stack. The finding concerns the tested software and connection, not every G1 unit or every humanoid robot, but it illustrates why access control, pairing, encryption, firmware updates and network isolation matter. If an attacker can gain the same authority as a legitimate operator, the distinction between “autonomous” and “remotely controlled” becomes a security risk rather than merely a product feature.

What this means for people evaluating a humanoid robot

For buyers and managers

Request a task-level autonomy statement. It should identify which actions run onboard, when an operator is required, the expected network conditions, the fallback behavior and the evidence for performance on unfamiliar objects. A lower-cost robot with reliable teleoperation may be more useful than a supposedly autonomous system that fails outside a scripted routine.

For safety teams

Map every control authority: local motor controllers, autonomy software, remote operators, emergency-stop devices and maintenance interfaces. Test loss of connectivity, conflicting commands, delayed video and unauthorized access. Record whether an intervention was preventive, corrective or merely available but unused.

For researchers and demonstrators

Report the environment, number of trials, operator role, intervention frequency and task boundaries. Distinguish “autonomous walking,” “autonomous grasping,” “autonomous navigation” and “autonomous task completion.” This terminology gives readers a meaningful basis for comparison and avoids overstating a successful scripted sequence.

The bottom line on humanoid-robot control

Humanoid robots are not divided into a simple autonomous camp and a remotely operated camp. They occupy a control spectrum. Autonomous software handles repeatable perception, planning and motion; teleoperation supplies human judgment when objects or environments are unfamiliar; hybrid systems combine both and let a person intervene when confidence or safety requires it. Remote demonstrations can also become training data for later autonomous policies. To understand any claim, identify the exact task, the human’s authority, the robot’s local responsibilities, the communication path and the recovery procedure.
