If you cannot confirm a match, use the grill maker’s recommended gentle cleaning method.
First identify the grate’s actual finish
Check the grill manual or the manufacturer’s care page for the exact grate material and coating. “Ceramic-coated” is not interchangeable with porcelain enamel: CADAC provides care guidance for its GreenGrill ceramic coating, while Weber and Coleman describe porcelain-enamel or porcelain-coated cast-iron parts. Instructions for one finish should not be assumed to apply to another.
For example, Coleman’s Pro Series care manual says: “Always handle Porcelain-Coated Cast Iron with care to avoid damaging the porcelain enamel finish.” That is specific guidance about porcelain-coated cast iron, not a universal rule for every ceramic coating. Coleman Pro Series care manual
Match the cleaner to the grate and follow both sets of directions
Read the grill maker’s instructions alongside the cleaner label. Look for the exact coating or material, any brand limitation, and directions for temperature, application, dwell time, tools, and rinsing. A product’s general description as a grill cleaner does not establish that it is safe for every coated grate.

Manufacturer recommendations are surface-specific. CADAC names its cleaner for its GreenGrill surfaces. Weber recommends Q and Grate cleaner for stainless-steel, enamel, and cast-iron grates. Napoleon says its grate cleaner is for Napoleon enameled cast-iron, stainless-steel, and cast-stainless-steel grates. These recommendations do not establish that either Weber’s or Napoleon’s cleaner is suitable for every ceramic-coated grate.
Use a gentle method for CADAC GreenGrill
For CADAC GreenGrill cooking surfaces, CADAC advises waiting until the grid has cooled, then washing with warm water and a soft sponge or dishwashing brush. For difficult stains, CADAC allows its own cleaner. It says not to use metal tools, scourers, or abrasives on GreenGrill surfaces. CADAC care guidance

CADAC also recommends its GreenGrill Brush for its ceramic-coated surfaces. Keep that recommendation within its stated scope; it does not mean the brush or cleaner is approved for other makers’ coatings.
Follow product-specific temperature, dwell, and rinse directions
Even when a cleaner names a compatible surface, its application directions matter. The instructions cited here are not identical:

Do not transfer a dwell time, temperature instruction, or surface claim from one product to another. Follow the directions on the cleaner you actually use.
A conservative cleaning sequence
- Check the grill manual or manufacturer care page for the exact grate finish and approved cleaning method.
- Let the grill cool if the manufacturer or cleaner requires it.
- Remove loose residue with a soft tool approved for that finish. Avoid metal tools or abrasives wherever the grate maker prohibits them.
- Use the maker-approved soap-and-water method, or a cleaner whose label explicitly names the grate’s material or coating.
- Apply the cleaner for the stated time and rinse thoroughly when directed. Dry the grate as the grill manual specifies.
If the label does not name the coating, or you cannot tell whether the grate’s finish matches the listed material, ask the grill or grate manufacturer before applying the product.

Be cautious with abrasive cleaning blocks
An EarthStone Grill Cleaning Block listing claims use on porcelain-enamel grates and ceramic surfaces, but the listed product contains silicon carbide and carries a warning to test it on a hidden area first. The listing is a secondary transcription that warns its information may be inaccurate.
