That is a striking comparison, but it is not a like-for-like count: the figures cover different periods, categories and reporting sources. It suggests strong demand for gimbal cameras; it does not prove they outsold all compact point-and-shoot cameras globally.
What are gimbal cameras, and what did IDC count?
A gimbal camera combines a camera with a motorized stabilizing gimbal, which helps keep footage steady as the person holding it moves. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is one example of this product type. It is illustrative only: the market figures do not identify sales for individual models.
IDC groups gimbal cameras within its broader “handheld smart camera” market. Its definition covers portable consumer imaging devices that can be handheld, have computing capability and electronic or optical stabilization, and record at 2K resolution or higher. The tracked categories are gimbal cameras, action cameras and panoramic or 360-degree cameras.
How large were the reported shipments?
In its September 23, 2026 announcement, IDC said more than 5.88 million handheld smart cameras shipped globally in Q2 2026, up 57% year over year. Gimbal cameras accounted for nearly 2.8 million units, an 87% increase year over year, making them the largest of IDC’s three tracked categories for that quarter. Action cameras exceeded 2.55 million units, up 47%, while panoramic cameras exceeded 530,000, up 4%. IDC’s Q2 2026 announcement attributes these estimates to its Global Handheld Smart Camera Market Tracker.

IDC also forecast that the wider handheld smart camera market could approach 41 million units annually by 2030, with a five-year compound annual growth rate near 20%. That is a forecast, not a reported shipment result.
How does that compare with compact cameras?
CIPA reported 2,436,911 shipments of built-in-lens digital cameras worldwide in calendar 2025, equal to 129.6% of the previous year’s total. The comparison is therefore nearly 2.8 million gimbal cameras in one quarter versus about 2.44 million built-in-lens cameras over an entire year. The difference is approximately half a million units; IDC describes the gimbal figure as “nearly” 2.8 million, so the exact gap cannot be calculated from the published rounded number. CIPA’s 2026 release gives the built-in-lens figure.

“Built-in-lens” is CIPA’s category label, not a precise count of pocket point-and-shoot models. Nor are the two datasets directly comparable: IDC’s figure is one quarter of a broader handheld smart camera market tracker, while CIPA’s is a full-year figure for a different product category reported by participating Japanese camera makers. The result is a useful signal of scale and momentum, not proof that gimbal cameras have surpassed every kind of compact camera in total global popularity.
Does this mean gimbal cameras are more popular?
It depends on what “popular” means. The IDC data shows that gimbal cameras were the largest single category within its handheld smart camera tracking in Q2 2026 and that their shipments grew quickly year over year. Shipment volume is not the same as consumer preference, installed base, retail sales value or total camera ownership. The available figures do not establish how many people bought a gimbal camera instead of a compact, or how the categories compare across a full year.

IDC reported DJI at 73% and Insta360 at 20% of Q2 2026 shipments across the combined handheld smart camera market—not gimbal cameras alone. Those shares should not be read as brand shares for gimbals specifically.

The category growth says more about a market trend than about which camera is right for a particular job. Gimbal cameras are designed to stabilize moving handheld footage; action cameras and 360 cameras serve different capture styles, and fixed-lens compacts are another category. The cited shipment reports do not provide a controlled comparison of image quality, video performance, field of view, portability or ease of use. Choose based on the kind of footage and framing you need, rather than treating shipment growth as a product-performance ranking.

Digital Camera World’s October 2, 2026 article framed the comparison as gimbal cameras shipping about half a million more units than Japan’s popular point-and-shoots. The underlying numbers make for a compelling headline, but the category and time-period distinctions matter: the comparison is suggestive, not a direct head-to-head market tally.
