Usually, no—not by default. “Free” describes price or included capacity, not how long prompts, responses, metadata, or cached output remain available. A service can avoid training on your data and still keep abuse-monitoring records for 30 days, write request details to a gateway, cache a response for an hour, or leave copies in your own proxy, browser, dashboard, backup, or SIEM.
The safe approach is to treat every prompt and completion as sensitive, map every system that handles the request, and verify the provider’s retention controls for the exact route, region, model and account tier you use. The policies below show why a free AI endpoint can be useful without being automatically private.
What “free AI” actually tells you
A free server, gateway or inference allowance answers one commercial question: whether you pay for the capacity. It does not answer the privacy questions that matter when a prompt contains source code, customer records, health information, credentials or confidential strategy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Training: whether the provider uses your content to train or improve a model.
- Content retention: whether prompt and response bodies are stored, and for how long.
- Operational metadata: whether timestamps, model names, token counts, IP addresses, request IDs, error details or account identifiers remain after processing.
- Caching: whether a gateway or edge cache keeps response bodies so later requests can be served faster.
- Access: which provider staff, subprocessors, support systems or downstream model vendors can view the data.
- Location: where processing and storage occur, and which regional or contractual rules apply.
These are separate controls. OpenAI’s API policy, for example, says: “As of March 1, 2023, data sent to the OpenAI API is not used to train or improve OpenAI models (unless you explicitly opt in to share data with us).” That statement addresses training, not the existence of abuse-monitoring logs. OpenAI also documents default abuse-monitoring retention of up to 30 days.

Follow the request through every logging layer
Privacy is determined by the longest-lived copy, not just by the model host. A typical request can travel through the following chain:
- Your application: debug statements, exception traces, analytics events and request snapshots can record the full JSON payload.
- Reverse proxy or load balancer: access logs may include query strings, headers, body samples or rejected requests.
- AI gateway: routing, rate limiting, analytics, retries and cache features can create their own records.
- Model provider: the endpoint may retain content for abuse monitoring, support, safety review or service improvement, according to its policy.
- Downstream model vendor: a gateway that routes to another company passes that company’s terms into the chain.
- Client and operations tools: browser history, local storage, traces, dashboards, alert payloads, ticket attachments, backups and SIEM exports may outlive the API call.
Disable content logging in one layer and the other layers can still preserve it. A “zero-retention” switch at the gateway also cannot erase a prompt already written by your application or copied into an incident ticket.
Provider comparison: what is documented
The following table separates prompt and completion content from metadata, cache behavior and controls. Dates identify the policy information available for the named provider; they are not a promise that a policy will never change.
Recommended Free Tools
| Service | Prompt/completion content | Metadata or logs | Cache and exceptions | Zero-retention status | Free-tier or scope note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI API | Not used to train or improve models unless the customer opts in, according to OpenAI’s March 1, 2023 statement. Default abuse-monitoring logs may contain content. | Default abuse-monitoring logs can be retained for up to 30 days (OpenAI, 2023). | Zero Data Retention and Modified Abuse Monitoring have eligibility, approval and endpoint limitations. | Not the default; approval-gated controls are available only to eligible customers and endpoints. | Applies to the API policy described here, not every OpenAI product or interface. |
| Cloudflare AI Gateway and Workers AI | Gateway storage depends on the logging mode and features enabled. Workers AI says standard requests are not retained after processing. | Cloudflare documents separate Workers and Legacy log stores. Accounts using Workers Logs on the Free plan have a 100,000-log total persistent-log limit across all gateways (Cloudflare, 2026). | Workers AI exceptions include stateful features and logging or caching enabled by the customer. | Workers AI’s no-retention statement is for standard processing; customer-enabled storage changes the result. | AI Gateway core features are offered for free with a Cloudflare account; free does not mean every log store is absent. |
| DigitalOcean Inference | DigitalOcean says it does not store model inputs or outputs on its infrastructure. | Not stated for every operational system in the available policy summary. | Conversation data is collected after Signals is enabled. | Content non-storage is the stated default on DigitalOcean infrastructure, subject to Signals and downstream terms. | When a request is routed to a third-party model, that provider’s policy applies. |
| Consensus Protocol | “Prompts and completions are processed in memory on our own hardware and are never written to disk, never logged, never used for training, and never reviewed by humans.” | Operational metadata may remain for up to 90 days (Consensus Protocol LLC, 2026). | No prompt or completion cache is stated; operational records are a separate category. | Content handling is explicitly no-storage in the quoted policy; metadata still has a retention period. | The statement describes Consensus Protocol’s own hardware and service policy, not any downstream route. |
| AhuraSense Cloud | Prompts and completions are excluded from usage and gateway logs. | Usage records retain operational fields; the exact general metadata period is not stated in the available policy summary. | Eligible non-streamed response bodies may be cached for up to one hour (AhuraSense, 2026). | Configurable per API key; a zero-data-retention switch is not necessarily global. | Streaming eligibility and cache behavior must be checked for the endpoint you call. |
| GitLab self-hosted AI Gateway | Default logs omit LLM prompt input and response output. | Retention depends on the operator’s GitLab, proxy, host, backup and SIEM configuration. | Self-hosted surrounding infrastructure can add storage even when the gateway’s default log format omits bodies. | Operator-controlled rather than a provider-wide hosted guarantee. | Self-hosting changes who controls the logs; it does not make logging impossible. |
How the named services handle privacy
OpenAI API: training exclusion is not deletion
OpenAI’s published API position separates model training from abuse monitoring. The March 1, 2023 statement excludes API data from training and improvement unless you opt in, while default abuse-monitoring logs can contain prompts, responses and derived metadata for up to 30 days. A team that needs stricter handling must ask whether its organization and endpoint qualify for Zero Data Retention or Modified Abuse Monitoring. Those controls require eligibility and approval, and they do not apply uniformly to every endpoint.
For a regulated workflow, document the approved endpoint and the approval date rather than assuming that an organization-level setting covers every model route. Also remove sensitive payloads from your own logs; a provider control cannot delete a copy created before the request left your network.
Cloudflare AI Gateway and Workers AI: free features with explicit storage modes
Cloudflare says, “AI Gateway’s core features available today are offered for free, and all it takes is a Cloudflare account and one line of code to get started.” The gateway can provide analytics, rate limiting and caching without a subscription, but those features introduce storage choices. Cloudflare documents separate Workers and Legacy log stores, so you must identify which store your account and integration use.
Cloudflare’s 2026 Workers Free limit is 100,000 persistent logs total across all gateways for accounts using Workers Logs. That is a capacity limit, not a statement that logs contain no content or are automatically deleted at the moment the limit is reached. Check whether request or response bodies are enabled before sending confidential text.

DigitalOcean Inference: check Signals and the downstream model
DigitalOcean says it does not store model inputs or outputs on its infrastructure, except for conversation data collected after Signals is enabled. Signals is therefore a material configuration choice: enabling conversation capture changes the content-retention picture.
DigitalOcean can route requests to third-party models. In that case, the third party’s policy governs its copy. Record the model vendor, route and region for each production integration instead of treating “DigitalOcean Inference” as a single retention boundary.
Consensus Protocol: unusually explicit content handling
Consensus Protocol’s policy is direct: “Prompts and completions are processed in memory on our own hardware and are never written to disk, never logged, never used for training, and never reviewed by humans.” That is stronger than a generic “we do not train” statement because it addresses storage, logging and human review.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The same policy allows operational metadata to remain for up to 90 days (Consensus Protocol LLC, 2026). Request timing, status or account data can therefore persist even when the text itself does not. Keep your own request identifiers free of prompt excerpts so metadata cannot indirectly reveal the sensitive content.
AhuraSense Cloud: per-key control and a one-hour cache window
AhuraSense excludes prompts and completions from usage and gateway logs, while retaining operational fields in usage records. Eligible non-streamed responses may be cached for up to one hour (AhuraSense, 2026). A response that is absent from ordinary logs can still be present in that cache.
AhuraSense provides a zero-data-retention switch per API key. Treat that as a scoped control: use a dedicated key for sensitive traffic, verify that the endpoint is eligible, and avoid assuming that another key or an application-side cache follows the same setting.
GitLab self-hosted AI Gateway: control moves to the operator
GitLab’s self-hosted guidance says, “By default, the log does not contain LLM prompt input and response output to support data retention policies of AI feature data.” That default reduces accidental content capture in the gateway’s own logs.

Turn off content logging before sending sensitive text
Use this sequence for any provider. Names vary by product, but the control categories are consistent.
- Classify the prompt. Mark it public, internal, confidential or regulated. If it contains credentials, personal data or a customer contract, choose the strictest path or redact it first.
- Remove payloads from application logs. Log a request ID, status, latency, token counts and model identifier only when operations require them. Do not log the serialized request or response object.
- Disable SDK debug output. Turn off verbose HTTP logging, wire traces and exception dumps in production. Confirm that retries do not write the body to a separate debug file.
- Configure the reverse proxy. Disable request-body and response-body logging, header sampling and failed-request body capture. Keep access records limited to method, route, status, latency and a non-sensitive request ID.
- Review tracing and error reporting. Sampling tools can attach full spans, and error reporters can include the last request body. Redact fields before export and disable payload collection for the AI route.
- Inspect gateway settings. Turn off content analytics, request/response capture and body-level debugging. If the gateway supports separate logging modes, select metadata-only logging.
- Disable or constrain caches. Set the AI route to bypass shared caches unless caching is essential. If caching is required, use short, documented lifetimes and ensure cache keys cannot mix users or tenants.
- Apply provider controls. Use OpenAI’s approved Zero Data Retention or Modified Abuse Monitoring option when eligible; leave Cloudflare stateful storage, logging and caching off for stateless sensitive requests; keep DigitalOcean Signals conversation capture disabled when you do not need it; enable AhuraSense’s zero-data-retention setting on the key that handles sensitive traffic.
- Limit access. Restrict dashboards, log buckets and support tools to the smallest group. Encrypt stored metadata and separate production credentials from development accounts.
- Set deletion schedules. Define when operational records, traces, cache entries, backups and SIEM exports are deleted. A schedule should name the system, data category, retention period and owner.
- Test with synthetic data. Send a unique, harmless marker such as
RETENTION_TEST_2026_10_20_A, then search each layer and verify that the marker disappears according to the stated schedule. - Record the configuration. Save the provider, model route, region, policy version, account tier, key-level settings and review date. Recheck after provider or gateway changes.
What to log instead of prompts and completions
Operations teams usually need enough information to diagnose failures without reading customer text. A minimal event can contain:
- an opaque request ID generated before the provider call;
- timestamp and duration;
- HTTP status and provider error class;
- model and route identifier;
- input and output token counts, if the provider exposes them;
- region or deployment identifier;
- retry count and timeout category; and
- a boolean indicating whether a cache was used, without storing the cached body.
Do not place an email address, account number, document title or prompt fragment inside the request ID or error message. Metadata becomes sensitive when it can be joined with another database.
Caches deserve a separate review
Logging and caching solve different problems. A system can avoid ordinary request logs while retaining a response in a cache. AhuraSense’s documented maximum of one hour for eligible non-streamed response bodies is a concrete example. Cloudflare Workers AI also lists customer-enabled caching as an exception to its standard no-retention behavior.
Before enabling a cache, answer four questions:
- Is the response identical for every user, or does it contain tenant-specific information?
- Can a cache key include authorization, tenant or conversation state safely?
- Who can inspect or purge the cache?
- What is the maximum lifetime, including stale and backup copies?
For personalized answers, bypass shared caching unless you can prove isolation. If you cache public, deterministic responses, document that classification and monitor for accidental inclusion of private context.
Self-hosting: fewer external records, more operational responsibility
Running an AI gateway or model on your own infrastructure can reduce the number of organizations that receive prompt content, but it does not create automatic zero retention. Web servers, container logs, crash dumps, host snapshots, backup software and security monitoring can all capture data. GitLab’s default omission of prompt and response bodies is useful only when your surrounding stack preserves the same boundary.
Self-hosted operators should make body logging a prohibited default, apply short retention to metadata, encrypt disks and backups, restrict shell access, and test restoration procedures for accidental content exposure. A private network path is not a substitute for a deletion policy.

1. Decide whether the text can leave your environment
If policy forbids external processing, redact or use a self-hosted model. If external processing is allowed, define the maximum acceptable content-retention period and region before comparing vendors.
2. Separate content from metadata requirements
You may accept 30 days of abuse-monitoring metadata while requiring prompt bodies to be absent. Or you may need both content and metadata deleted within hours. Write those as separate requirements so a training exclusion does not appear to satisfy a storage requirement.
3. Check defaults, then exceptions
Ask whether zero retention is default, configurable, or approval-gated; whether it applies per account, endpoint or API key; and whether safety, stateful or abuse-monitoring exceptions remain. OpenAI’s stricter controls are eligibility- and approval-dependent. AhuraSense’s control is per key. Cloudflare Workers AI’s statement excludes customer-enabled state and logging.
4. Trace downstream routing
For DigitalOcean or any gateway that can switch model vendors, record the actual downstream provider. A gateway’s privacy statement cannot override the provider receiving the final request.
5. Verify with a deletion test
Use a synthetic marker, search application logs, gateway dashboards, cache stores and SIEM exports, and retain screenshots or timestamps of the result. Repeat after upgrades or route changes.

“The provider says it does not train on data, so we are safe.”
Why it fails: training and storage are different purposes. OpenAI’s API statement excludes training while default abuse-monitoring logs can last up to 30 days.
Fix: obtain a content-retention statement and a metadata-retention statement for the exact endpoint, then remove content from your own logs.
“We turned off application logs, but a response appeared in a dashboard.”
Why it fails: gateway analytics, traces or caches can capture bodies independently.

“Workers AI says requests are not retained.”
Why it fails: the statement covers standard requests, while stateful features and customer-enabled logging or caching are exceptions.
Fix: use the stateless path for sensitive calls and verify that those features are disabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Self-hosting means nobody else can see prompts.”
Why it fails: your own proxy, host, backups or SIEM may still store them.
Fix: enforce metadata-only logging throughout the stack and test deletion from every copy.
“A free gateway has no durable records.”
Why it fails: Cloudflare documents free analytics and a 100,000-log persistent limit for Workers Free accounts using Workers Logs. A limit describes capacity, not the absence of records.
Fix: identify the active log store, content fields and expiration behavior before production use.
A practical minimum policy for a small team
If you need a concise baseline, adopt these rules:
- No prompts, completions or raw provider payloads in application, proxy, trace or error logs.
- Metadata-only events with opaque IDs, status, latency, token counts and model route.
- No shared cache for personalized responses.
- Dedicated API keys for sensitive traffic, with the strictest available retention control.
- A documented downstream provider and region for every route.
- Automatic deletion of operational metadata and a quarterly synthetic-marker test.
- Redaction before a prompt leaves your environment, especially for credentials and direct identifiers.
These practices do not make an external AI service risk-free. They reduce the number and lifetime of copies, which is the practical goal of log hygiene.
Bottom line
Free AI capacity is not a privacy promise. Choose a service only after you know whether prompt and completion bodies are stored, how long metadata remains, whether caches or stateful features create exceptions, what a downstream model provider does, and which records your own systems create. The safest design is metadata-only observability, no shared cache for private responses, provider controls applied at the correct scope, and a deletion test that proves the configuration in practice.
