Crypto staking yields are sustainable as variable protocol incentives, not as guaranteed interest. A proof-of-stake network usually pays validators with newly issued native tokens, transaction-fee income, or both. Your realized return then depends on total stake, network usage, validator performance, commissions, slashing, token-price changes and the risks added by any staking provider.

A quoted APY can therefore be real in token terms while still losing purchasing power. The key question is not simply “What rate is advertised?” but “Which activity produces the tokens, who bears the risks, and how does issuance affect everyone who does not stake?”

What staking rewards are paying you for

Proof-of-stake networks use validators to propose blocks, attest that transactions are valid and help keep consensus operating. Staking locks or delegates the network’s native asset so a validator has something valuable at risk. In return, the protocol distributes rewards according to its rules.

“In exchange for providing validation services, Validators earn ‘rewards’ of two types: (1) newly minted (or created) Covered Crypto Assets that are programmatically distributed to the Validator in accordance with the underlying software protocol; and (2) a percentage of the transaction fees, paid in Covered Crypto Assets, by parties who are seeking to add their transactions to the network.”

Those are protocol-level rewards. A service can advertise a higher yield by adding a business strategy around them, such as lending, trading, subsidies, or restaking. That extra return is not the same thing as the chain’s validator yield.

New issuance

Newly created tokens fund part of the security budget. Issuance is not free income for the ecosystem: it increases supply and can dilute holders who do not stake. A staker may receive more tokens while the value of each token falls, leaving the position’s purchasing power unchanged or lower.

Transaction fees

Users pay fees to have transactions included. Depending on the protocol, some or all of that income goes to validators, while another portion may be burned or allocated elsewhere. Fee income follows demand for block space, so it is usually less predictable than scheduled issuance.

Provider-generated returns

If a product’s rate is materially above the underlying protocol reward, identify the additional activity. Ethereum.org warns that some products “may not be staking at all” and that their yield may come from “lending, trading, or other activities rather than validators.” Those strategies introduce credit, market, liquidity and counterparty risks that do not disappear because the product uses the word staking.

How Ethereum’s reward mechanics change the APY

Ethereum’s validator reward is calculated each epoch from a base reward tied to effective balance and the total active balance. Ethereum.org summarizes the relationship this way: “The more validators, the greater the overall issuance (as sqrt(N) but the smaller the base_reward per validator (as 1/sqrt(N)).”

In practical terms, more participation can increase the network’s total issuance while reducing the amount earned by each validator. A validator does not receive a permanently fixed percentage simply because it is online today. The denominator changes as other participants join or leave.

Why more staking usually lowers per-validator rewards

  1. The protocol determines a reward budget using its issuance rules and active stake.
  2. As total active stake rises, the base reward per validator generally falls according to the inverse-square-root relationship.
  3. Your gross reward is then adjusted by uptime, proposal and attestation performance, penalties, commissions and any provider fee.
  4. Your economic result also changes with the token’s market price and with dilution affecting non-stakers.

This explains why an APY shown when participation is low cannot be treated as a forecast for the same APY after large inflows.

Ethereum issuance and fee burns

Ethereum.org’s issuance page gives historical, pre-Merge assumptions rather than a current universal APY: approximately 4.09% execution-layer inflation and 0.52% consensus-layer inflation, or about 4.61% annualized issuance under those stated assumptions. These figures describe the pre-Merge reference model and must not be presented as today’s Ethereum staking rate.

After The Merge, execution-layer issuance is zero under Ethereum’s post-Merge design, while consensus-layer issuance and validator rewards remain governed by proof-of-stake rules. Ethereum burns each transaction’s base fee. On current transaction execution, Ethereum.org states: “The tips get paid to the validator while the base fee gets burned.”

When network demand is high, burned base fees can offset or exceed new issuance, reducing net supply. When demand is low, the burn is smaller. The same staking position can therefore sit in a different supply environment from one period to the next.

What “sustainable” means for a staker

The word has two separate meanings. Confusing them is the source of many unrealistic yield claims.

Protocol sustainability

A proof-of-stake network needs to pay enough to attract and retain honest validators, compensate them for operating infrastructure and make attacks economically expensive. Issuance, fee distribution and penalties are policy tools for that security budget. A protocol can keep paying rewards indefinitely under its rules, but the percentage rate can change as participation, governance parameters or fee demand change.

Investor sustainability

An individual staker needs to preserve value after inflation, token-price volatility, commissions, taxes where applicable, slashing, lockups and the return available from other uses of the asset. The supplied sources support protocol rewards as a design function; they do not promise that a staker’s purchasing power will rise or even remain stable.

A 6% token APY does not automatically beat 5% inflation in the token’s supply, and neither figure tells you what happens if the token falls 30% against your local currency. Real return has to be assessed in the unit that matters to you, after all costs and losses.

Will staking rewards run out?

Rewards do not have to “run out” in the sense of reaching zero on a predetermined date. A network can continue issuing rewards and distributing fees as long as its protocol rules provide for them. What can run out is a particular rate, subsidy or business promotion.

  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
  • Issuance can be adjusted: protocol upgrades or governance can change reward parameters.
  • Per-validator rewards can decline: additional stake increases participation and usually lowers the base reward per validator.
  • Fee income can contract: less demand for block space means fewer tips or other fee payments.
  • Provider bonuses can end: a service may subsidize an introductory rate that is not funded by validators.
  • Net supply can change: burns may offset issuance during busy periods, but not necessarily during quiet ones.

The appropriate question is therefore “What rule or activity funds this rate, and how can that source change?” rather than “Is the advertised APY permanent?”

Is staking APY real, or is it just inflation?

It can be both a genuine token distribution and an inflation transfer. Suppose a protocol issues new tokens to stakers. Those tokens are real and can be claimed, sold or compounded. At the same time, every holder who does not stake owns a slightly smaller share of the total supply unless fee burns or other demand compensate for the issuance.

Evaluate a staking return in four layers:

  1. Gross token reward: the number of native tokens credited before deductions.
  2. Supply effect: how much new issuance dilutes non-stakers and whether burns offset it.
  3. Operational result: commissions, downtime, slashing, taxes and lockup or unbonding delays.
  4. Market result: the token’s price in your reporting currency and the opportunity cost of holding it.

Compounding can increase the token balance, but it does not remove market or inflation risk. A nominal APY should never be described as a guaranteed interest rate.

Comparing ways to stake

The route you choose determines who controls keys, who operates validators and who absorbs losses. No route is universally safest.

Route How rewards are produced Access and control Main additional risks
Solo or home staking Direct protocol issuance, tips and other validator income. Direct participation and maximum control; an Ethereum validator requires 32 ETH, reliable operation and careful key management. Hardware, connectivity, software maintenance, downtime, key loss and slashing are your responsibility.
Delegated staking or staking as a service Usually validator rewards passed through after a commission. A provider operates infrastructure; depending on the arrangement, you may retain keys or delegate control. Provider solvency, commission changes, operational failures and unclear custody terms.
Pooled staking Many deposits are combined and rewards are distributed after pool costs. Allows deposits below Ethereum’s 32 ETH validator threshold, but inserts an intermediary between you and the protocol. Smart-contract bugs, pool concentration, fees, governance decisions and withdrawal limits.
Liquid staking Underlying staking rewards accrue to a receipt or liquid token, less provider fees. You receive a transferable token representing the deposited asset and accrued rewards. Receipt-token price discounts, redemption liquidity, smart-contract failure, provider risk and slashing. The SEC states that provider fees reduce rewards and slashing losses are deducted from deposited stake.
Custodial exchange yield May be validator staking, or may rely on lending, trading or another internal strategy. The provider controls custody, eligibility, lockups and often the withdrawal process. Counterparty failure, policy changes, opaque yield sources, frozen withdrawals and loss of direct key control.

Ethereum.org notes that exchange rates, lockups and eligibility can change under company policy. Treat an exchange’s displayed APY as an offer with terms, not as a property of Ethereum itself.

Is liquid staking safer than staking through an exchange?

Liquid staking is not automatically safer; it changes the risk profile. You may retain a transferable receipt token and avoid a long illiquid lockup, but you add smart-contract, depeg, redemption and provider risks. A custodial exchange may be simpler, yet you give up direct custody and may not know whether the advertised yield comes from validators.

Compare the two on specific questions:

  • Who holds the withdrawal and signing keys?
  • Can you verify that assets are actually delegated to validators?
  • What happens to your deposit if a validator is slashed?
  • Which fees are taken before the displayed APY?
  • Can the receipt token trade below the underlying asset?
  • What is the documented unbonding or redemption period?
  • Can the provider change rates, eligibility or lockups without your consent?

The SEC’s 2025 statement on liquid staking says: “In a Liquid Staking arrangement, rewards accrue to and slashing losses are deducted from the staked Covered Crypto Assets.” That describes the economic treatment of rewards and losses; it does not remove investment, operational or regulatory risk.

What a hardware wallet can—and cannot—do

A hardware wallet keeps private keys on a dedicated device while it signs staking transactions. For example, Ethereum wallet products in the Ledger Nano range allow staking through Ledger Wallet while the private keys remain on the hardware device; the product information also states that rewards are not guaranteed.

  • EASY ASSET MANAGEMENT: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our user-friendly desktop and mobile app

That setup can improve self-custody, but it does not change the protocol’s issuance schedule or protect against a falling token price. It also does not prevent:

  • validator downtime or poor attestation performance;
  • slashing caused by operational or key-management mistakes;
  • smart-contract bugs in a pool or liquid-staking system;
  • provider commissions, insolvency or governance changes;
  • unbonding delays and market illiquidity.

Use the device to verify and sign the exact transaction, confirm the destination and permissions, protect the recovery phrase offline and understand whether you are delegating, depositing into a contract or running a validator. Self-custody controls the key; it does not guarantee yield.

A practical due-diligence checklist before staking

  1. Identify the reward source. Is it newly issued protocol currency, transaction fees, a subsidy, lending income, trading income or a mixture?
  2. Find the protocol formula. Check how total active stake, effective balance and validator performance affect rewards.
  3. Separate gross from net. Write down provider commission, pool fee, withdrawal fee, gas cost and any performance deduction.
  4. Measure inflation exposure. Determine whether new issuance dilutes non-stakers and whether fee burns or other sinks offset it.
  5. Read the slashing terms. Establish who pays for validator penalties and whether losses are taken from your principal.
  6. Check custody. Confirm who controls private keys, withdrawal credentials and the ability to pause withdrawals.
  7. Check liquidity. Record the unbonding period, redemption queue and whether a liquid token can trade below its underlying asset.
  8. Test the operational history. Look for disclosed uptime, missed attestations, incidents and changes in commissions; do not rely on APY alone.
  9. Model a bad market. Consider what happens if the token price falls, demand for block space drops and withdrawals are delayed at the same time.
  10. Verify the legal description. Regulatory statements describe particular activities and do not eliminate investment or operational risk.

Why your displayed APY may fall

More people stake

Higher total active stake generally lowers the base reward per validator through Ethereum’s inverse-square-root relationship. This is normal protocol behavior, not necessarily a service failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network demand changes

Tips and other fee income depend on users competing for block space. A quiet network can reduce validator income even when issuance rules have not changed.

Fees or performance change

A provider can alter its commission, or a validator can miss duties. The advertised figure may be an estimate before deductions rather than the amount credited to you.

The product was never pure staking

If a rate depended on lending, trading, a token incentive or a promotional subsidy, that component can shrink or disappear independently of validator rewards.

Bottom line for evaluating sustainability

Crypto staking yields are sustainable only in the limited sense that a protocol can continue paying variable incentives for network security. They are not guaranteed interest and are not automatically sustainable in purchasing-power terms. Before staking, trace every token in the advertised return to issuance, fees or a clearly described external strategy; then price the dilution, commissions, slashing, custody, liquidity and market risks. A lower, transparent protocol reward can be economically healthier than a high APY whose source is opaque.
