Usually, only the cash-deposit portion of a crypto-friendly fintech account may be FDIC insured. Coverage depends on whether your money is actually deposited at an FDIC-insured bank, what deposit product holds it, how ownership is recorded, and whether a fintech intermediary satisfies the requirements for pass-through insurance. Bitcoin, ether, stablecoins, tokenized assets, securities and other non-deposit products are not FDIC insured.
The key distinction is between cash held as a bank deposit and crypto or investment assets held through an app. A fintech’s statement that it works with a partner bank is not, by itself, proof that every balance in the app has deposit-insurance protection.
What FDIC insurance covers—and what it does not
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation states: “FDIC deposit insurance only covers deposits, and only if your bank is FDIC-insured.” That rule applies whether you open the account directly with a bank or access a deposit product through a nonbank fintech.

| Product or balance | FDIC treatment | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Checking account | May be insured as a deposit | The actual insured bank, account records and ownership category |
| Savings account | May be insured as a deposit | That the money has been deposited at the named FDIC-insured bank |
| Money market deposit account | May be insured as a deposit | That it is a bank deposit product, not a brokerage or investment product |
| Certificate of deposit | May be insured as a deposit | The issuing insured bank and ownership category |
| Official bank check | Covered when issued by an insured bank under applicable rules | The issuing institution and payee or ownership records |
| Bitcoin, ether and other crypto assets | Not FDIC insured | Do not treat a crypto wallet balance as a bank deposit |
| Stablecoins | Not FDIC insured | A stable value or redemption promise does not make the token a deposit |
| Stocks, bonds and mutual funds | Not FDIC insured | These are investment securities, not insured deposits |
| Annuities and life insurance | Not FDIC insured | They have different legal and insurance arrangements |
| Municipal securities and U.S. Treasury bills, bonds or notes | Not FDIC insured | Government issuance does not turn the security into an FDIC-insured deposit |
FDIC insurance is not a guarantee against a drop in market value, a token depeg, a trading loss or a failed investment strategy. It also is not a general guarantee that money sent to a fintech will be returned if that fintech itself becomes insolvent.
Is a crypto-friendly fintech account the same as a bank account?
Not necessarily. A fintech may provide the app, payment interface, custody arrangement or crypto-trading service while a separate bank holds some customer cash. The legal account holder, the place where funds are held and the records identifying the owner determine whether deposit insurance can apply.
Use these questions to identify the structure:
- Who is the insured institution? Find the specific bank, not merely a statement that “banking services are provided by” an unnamed or changing partner.
- What asset do you own? A cash balance in a qualifying deposit account is different from bitcoin, stablecoins, tokenized assets or securities.
- Where is the cash held? Money may first be received by a nonbank and only later placed at an insured bank. It is not eligible for insurance merely because you sent it to the fintech.
- How is ownership recorded? If the fintech uses a custodial or pass-through arrangement, records generally must identify each beneficial owner and the amount owned.
- Which failure is covered? FDIC insurance addresses the failure of the insured bank. It does not automatically protect you from the bankruptcy or operational failure of the nonbank app.
How pass-through FDIC insurance works
Pass-through insurance is a method for covering customers whose money is placed at an FDIC-insured bank through a third party. Fintech partnerships are a common example. The customer can receive coverage as the beneficial owner of the deposit rather than as a direct customer who opened the bank’s online account.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The basic structure
- You provide cash to the fintech under its account or wallet agreement.
- The fintech places that cash in a deposit account at an identified FDIC-insured bank, sometimes in a custodial or omnibus account.
- The fintech and bank maintain records showing each customer’s beneficial ownership and balance.
- If the insured bank fails, the FDIC evaluates those records and the applicable ownership category and limit to determine coverage.
Pass-through treatment is conditional. The records generally must identify each beneficial owner and the amount owned, and other regulatory requirements must be met. If the conditions are not satisfied, the funds may be treated as belonging to the named third-party account owner instead. That can aggregate many customers’ money under one owner and materially reduce available coverage.

Why a partner-bank disclosure is not enough
A disclosure naming a bank establishes a relationship, not the status of every dollar or token in the app. It may not tell you whether all products use that bank, whether the cash has actually been deposited, whether crypto holdings are segregated from deposits, or whether beneficial-owner records support pass-through treatment. Read the current account agreement and partner-bank disclosure for the specific product you use.
Direct bank account versus fintech-app account
| Question | Direct account at an insured bank | Account accessed through a fintech |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides the account? | The FDIC-insured bank is normally the account provider. | A nonbank may provide the interface while one or more banks hold cash. |
| Where is the money? | In the bank’s deposit product, subject to its records and terms. | It must actually be deposited at the named insured bank; money held by the nonbank is not automatically covered. |
| How is ownership shown? | The bank’s account records ordinarily identify the depositor. | Pass-through coverage depends on accurate records identifying each beneficial owner and balance. |
| What assets are covered? | Qualifying deposits such as checking, savings, money market deposit accounts and CDs. | Only the qualifying cash-deposit component; crypto and securities remain outside FDIC insurance. |
| What failure does insurance address? | Failure of the insured bank. | Failure of the insured bank, not necessarily failure or bankruptcy of the fintech. |
| How is the limit applied? | $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. | The same limit, with ownership and aggregation determined from the bank and intermediary records. |
What happens if the fintech shuts down?
FDIC insurance does not function as a blanket fintech-shutdown guarantee. The FDIC’s consumer guidance says money sent to a nonbank company is not eligible for insurance until the company deposits it at an FDIC-insured bank and the applicable conditions are satisfied. It also says deposit insurance does not protect against insolvency or bankruptcy of the nonbank company.
Several outcomes are therefore possible:
- The insured bank fails while your cash is properly recorded as a covered deposit. The FDIC’s deposit-insurance process can apply, subject to the $250,000 limit, ownership category and available records.
- The fintech fails while your cash is already held at an insured bank in a valid pass-through arrangement. The deposit may still be a bank asset, but access could be delayed while records, servicing arrangements and ownership are sorted out. Insurance does not promise uninterrupted app access or instant withdrawals.
- The fintech fails before depositing your money, or records do not support pass-through treatment. FDIC insurance may not cover that claim against the nonbank. You may be a creditor in the fintech’s insolvency process instead.
- The failed balance is crypto, a stablecoin or another non-deposit asset. FDIC deposit insurance does not apply, regardless of whether the app also offers an insured cash account.
These distinctions are why the account agreement should specify the insured bank, the deposit product, the custody or pass-through arrangement and the treatment of funds during a disruption.
Does FDIC insurance cover bitcoin or stablecoins?
No. Bitcoin, ether and other crypto assets are not deposits. Stablecoins are also excluded; a token designed to track a currency is not converted into an FDIC-insured deposit by its intended price stability or redemption mechanism. Tokenized assets and securities likewise remain outside deposit insurance.

A single app can display several different balances, each governed by different rules:
- Cash deposit balance: May qualify if held at an FDIC-insured bank in an eligible deposit product and properly recorded.
- Crypto trading balance: A non-deposit asset or claim associated with crypto activity; not FDIC insured.
- Stablecoin balance: A token, not an insured bank deposit.
- Securities or investment balance: Not FDIC insured, even if the app also offers a bank-linked spending account.
Do not infer coverage from the app’s overall branding, a combined account screen or the fact that a bank participates in the service. Identify the legal nature of each balance separately.
How the $250,000 limit applies
The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. “Per bank” means deposits at two different insured banks may have separate limits. “Per ownership category” means accounts held in different legally recognized categories may receive separate coverage, while accounts in the same category at the same bank are generally aggregated for the limit.

The exact result depends on the bank’s account records and ownership classification, so use the FDIC’s coverage estimator and review the institution’s records rather than relying on an app’s balance label.

Crypto holdings do not consume or receive this deposit-insurance limit because they are not insured deposits. Moving cash into a token, fund, security or other non-deposit product does not create additional FDIC coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical verification checklist before you deposit
- Locate the current account agreement. Look for the legal provider, the named FDIC-insured bank and the exact product that holds cash.
- Separate cash from crypto. Confirm which screen or ledger represents a bank deposit and which represents a token, crypto asset or investment.
- Confirm that funds are actually deposited. A promise to sweep or place funds at a bank is different from money already held there.
- Read the pass-through provisions. Check whether the arrangement identifies you as the beneficial owner and explains how balances are reported to the bank.
- Check for multiple banks. If the fintech uses more than one insured bank, determine how your balance is allocated and how the $250,000 limit applies at each institution.
- Review ownership and aggregation. Include other deposits you hold at the same bank in the same ownership category when evaluating your total.
- Ask what happens during a fintech failure. The agreement should explain custody, access, records and the process for returning or transferring funds if the app stops operating.
- Recheck after material changes. Partner banks, products and custody arrangements can change, so verify the disclosure and agreement when terms, features or account screens change.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
“The app says it is FDIC insured, so every balance is protected.”
Insurance attaches to qualifying deposits at an insured bank, not to the app as a whole. A fintech should not be described simply as “FDIC insured” without naming the actual bank and explaining the account structure.
“A bank partner makes crypto holdings insured.”
A partner bank can hold an insured cash deposit while the same app displays uninsured crypto or token balances. The bank relationship does not change the legal nature of those assets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“If the fintech fails, the FDIC will reimburse me.”
FDIC coverage addresses a covered deposit when the insured bank fails. It does not insure a nonbank fintech against its own bankruptcy, recordkeeping failure or withdrawal freeze.

“Stable means insured.”
Stablecoin design, reserves or a target price do not make a token a deposit. Stablecoins are among the non-deposit products excluded from FDIC insurance.
What changed with the FDIC’s 2025 crypto-activity guidance?
On March 28, 2025, the FDIC issued FIL-7-2025. It rescinded a prior-notification requirement and clarified that FDIC-supervised institutions may engage in permissible crypto-related activities if they adequately manage the associated risks.
That supervisory change concerns what banks may do and how they manage risk. It does not turn bitcoin, stablecoins, tokenized assets or other crypto holdings into insured deposits, and it does not remove the $250,000 limit or the conditions for pass-through coverage.

The bottom line for your account
Treat a crypto-friendly fintech account as a collection of separate legal products until the documents prove otherwise. Cash can be protected when it is in a qualifying deposit at a named FDIC-insured bank and the ownership records satisfy applicable requirements. Crypto and investment balances are not FDIC insured. A partner-bank disclosure is only a starting point: verify where the money is held, who owns the deposit in the records, which bank’s limit applies and what protection exists if the nonbank fintech—not the insured bank—fails.
