Concrete thermal batteries have a comparatively benign fire profile, but they are not drop-in replacements for a data center’s UPS or battery energy-storage system. Their solid concrete-and-steel storage block does not use lithium-ion cell chemistry or the electrochemical reactions that cause thermal runaway. Safety still depends on the complete installation: heaters, electrical gear, pumps, valves, hot heat-transfer fluid, pressure equipment, insulation, controls and nearby plant systems. Publicly documented products are designed mainly for industrial heat and steam, and no reviewed source documents one supplying emergency electricity at a data center.
What a concrete thermal battery is
A concrete thermal battery stores energy as sensible heat rather than as chemical energy. In the documented HEATCRETE® design from ENERGYNEST, thermal concrete forms the storage mass and U-shaped carbon-steel tubes are embedded inside it. A heat-transfer fluid—typically thermal oil or water that can become steam—flows through the tubes. The fluid transfers heat into the concrete during charging and removes heat during discharge; it does not contact the concrete directly.
Electric heaters or another heat source charge the block. On discharge, the hot fluid supplies process heat, thermal oil or steam to equipment that needs it. The storage block itself has no moving parts. Pumps, control valves, sensors, heaters and the process interface sit outside that passive mass and make up the balance of plant.

The Idaho National Laboratory classifies concrete thermal energy storage as near-deployment technology and identifies the HEATCRETE module and U-tube steel heat-transfer arrangement. A peer-reviewed Journal of Energy Storage paper reports long-term performance for a concrete-based modular system. Those sources support industrial thermal-storage maturity, not certification as a data-center electrical-backup product.

Why the storage block has a different fire profile from lithium-ion cells
Concrete and steel are non-combustible structural materials under normal operating conditions. The block contains no lithium-ion electrolyte, cell separators or active electrochemical reaction. Consequently, it does not have the cell-level thermal-runaway mechanism associated with an overheating electrochemical battery. A separate refractory-brick supplier describes its own non-reactive product as having “Zero risk of combustion, gas release, or thermal runaway”; that is a vendor statement about that brick design, not independent proof for every thermal-battery technology.
This distinction applies to the storage medium, not automatically to the plant. A concrete thermal battery can still create a fire, burn or explosion hazard through equipment connected to it. Electrical heaters and switchgear can fail; hot surfaces can ignite nearby combustible materials; thermal oil can leak and burn; water or steam systems can release pressure; insulation and cable jackets can be damaged by heat; and pumps, valves or controls can malfunction.
Hazards that remain in the complete installation
- High-temperature surfaces: the block, tube penetrations, pipework and valves can remain hot after charging. Guarding, insulation, access control and burn-hazard labeling are required.
- Heat-transfer-fluid leaks: thermal oil can escape from flanges, seals or damaged piping. The selected fluid’s flash point, decomposition products, spill containment and drainage path must be assessed.
- Pressure release: water/steam circuits and any pressurized heat exchanger need relief devices, controlled venting and inspection under the jurisdiction’s pressure-equipment rules.
- Electrical faults: heaters, transformers, switchboards and cabling require protection against short circuits, overloads, ground faults and arc energy.
- Instrumentation or control failure: a failed temperature, pressure or flow sensor can allow operation outside the safe envelope unless independent trips are provided.
- Adjacent equipment: a fire in a boiler, generator, fuel system or neighboring process unit can expose the storage module even if the concrete itself does not burn.
Controls a data-center site should require
Project engineers should specify fire detection, emergency shutdown, equipment separation, ventilation, pressure protection, leak detection and a safe method to isolate electrical heaters and fluid circuits. The design must be reviewed against local fire code, building and mechanical requirements, pressure-vessel rules, environmental obligations for the chosen fluid, and the data center’s insurer criteria. A hazard-and-operability study should examine charging, discharging, cold start, loss of circulation, power failure, sensor disagreement, pipe rupture and maintenance states rather than only normal operation.

No reviewed source provides a dedicated data-center fire-test report for a concrete thermal battery. A site therefore needs project-specific fire modeling, acceptance testing and emergency procedures instead of treating the low combustibility of concrete as a blanket approval.
Materials, temperatures and thermal aging
HEATCRETE stores heat throughout a solid mass. The embedded steel tubes provide a large transfer surface while keeping the circulating fluid separated from the concrete. That arrangement avoids direct fluid contact with the storage material and allows the block to be assembled as repeatable modules.
ENERGYNEST reports operation to approximately 390°C and material testing to 550°C. These are different claims: a qualification or test temperature does not mean that every component, seal, instrument or insulation layer is rated for continuous service at that temperature. The final design must use the lowest-rated component as the practical limit and account for thermal expansion, startup gradients and local hot spots.

The vendor reports less than 2% thermal loss over 24 hours for a large project. Loss varies with block geometry, insulation, ambient conditions, standby duration and the connected piping, so a data center should request a guaranteed loss figure for its own duty cycle rather than transfer the headline percentage unchanged.
A design life above 25 years is also vendor-reported. ENERGYNEST discusses tens of thousands of thermal-stress cycles, but cycle life depends on temperature swing, ramp rate, maximum temperature and operating controls. Long service life for the concrete does not eliminate replacement schedules for pumps, valves, sensors, heaters, insulation or fluid.
How maintenance works in practice
The storage block is often described as maintenance-free in a narrow mechanical sense: it contains no rotating machinery. ENERGYNEST’s FAQ says the system requires very low maintenance because the only moving parts at the plant interface are a few control valves. That description should not be read as zero-maintenance operation for the whole thermal plant.

Items that still need inspection and service
- Pumps and valves: verify seals, bearings, actuator operation, stroke position, vibration and leakage; exercise standby equipment where the design includes it.
- Heat-transfer fluid: sample thermal oil for degradation, contamination and viscosity changes; inspect expansion tanks, filters and drains. For water/steam service, manage treatment, corrosion and dissolved gases.
- Heaters and electrical equipment: test insulation, protective trips, contactors, transformers, grounding and emergency isolation.
- Sensors and controls: calibrate temperature, pressure and flow instruments; prove alarms, interlocks, independent high-temperature trips and data logging.
- Insulation and enclosure: look for wetting, mechanical damage, hot spots, degraded jackets, blocked ventilation and unauthorized access.
- Pressure and safety systems: inspect relief valves, rupture protection, vents, drains, fire detection and suppression interfaces according to code intervals.
- Concrete and steel interfaces: use trend data and inspection to detect abnormal temperature gradients, tube leakage, corrosion or expansion movement.
Continuous recording of temperature, pressure and flow is a core reliability feature. Trending can reveal a gradual loss of heat-transfer performance, a stuck valve, pump degradation or a developing leak before the process trips. Operators should define alert limits, escalation times and a safe shutdown sequence for each deviation.
Redundancy and maintenance windows
ENERGYNEST describes installations operating in parallel with existing boilers or other heat sources. That arrangement can preserve process heat while a module, pump or valve is isolated for service, and it may allow partial operation during an outage. It is useful resilience for a thermal process, but it does not establish electrical resilience for servers. A data center still needs an independently engineered UPS, generator or microgrid strategy for critical loads.

Can a concrete thermal battery replace a data-center UPS?
Not directly. A UPS must deliver conditioned electricity within tight voltage, frequency and transfer-time limits. A concrete thermal battery delivers heat or steam. To turn stored heat into electricity, a project would need a heat engine, generator, power electronics, controls, cooling and an electrical interconnection sized for the required load. That heat-to-power chain adds equipment, conversion losses, response-time constraints and its own maintenance and fire hazards.

The public evidence reviewed supports concrete thermal batteries for industrial process heat, steam generation, drying and thermal-oil duties. It does not document a concrete thermal battery providing data-center UPS power or emergency electricity. Existing data-center designs generally evaluate electrochemical battery energy-storage systems, conventional UPS equipment, generators or hybrid microgrids for that function. A thermal battery could complement such systems—for example, by supplying heat to a process or reducing fuel use—but it should not be specified as a drop-in electrical backup.
Where the technology may fit around a data center
- A campus with a substantial steam or hot-water demand may use thermal storage to shift electric-heater operation away from peak periods.
- A facility with recoverable waste heat or an existing boiler plant may add thermal storage to smooth production and reduce cycling.
- A site pursuing combined heat and power could study a separately engineered heat-to-power loop, provided response time and black-start requirements are met by other equipment.
- A critical facility can use thermal storage for non-IT loads while retaining UPS and generator capacity for servers, networking and safety systems.
Concrete thermal battery versus electrochemical backup: the decisions that matter
| Decision axis | Concrete thermal battery | Electrochemical UPS or BESS |
|---|---|---|
| Stored output | High-temperature heat, thermal oil or steam | Electricity delivered through inverters |
| Primary fire mechanism | Non-combustible concrete/steel block; hazards arise mainly in heaters, fluids, piping and electrical balance of plant | Cell chemistry, electrical faults and potential thermal runaway must be managed |
| Response to an IT outage | Requires a separate heat-to-power system and is not established as a drop-in UPS | Designed to feed an electrical distribution system, subject to the selected UPS/BESS architecture |
| Mechanical maintenance | Passive block has no moving parts; pumps, valves, sensors, heaters, fluid circuits and safety systems still need service | Cells have no pumps, but racks, HVAC, fire protection, inverters, controls and electrical gear require maintenance |
| Evidence relevant to data centers | Industrial heat projects, near-deployment assessment and peer-reviewed modular performance; no reviewed data-center fire test or UPS deployment | Must be evaluated against the specific electrical, fire-code and certification requirements of the project |
| Best integration point | Boiler, steam, hot-water, drying or thermal-oil process loop | UPS bus, generator switchgear or microgrid electrical distribution |
How to evaluate one for a proposed data-center project
- Define the load: separate IT electrical loads from heating, domestic hot water, humidification and other thermal loads. State power, temperature, pressure, duration and required response time for each.
- Confirm the product boundary: obtain a P&ID showing the concrete modules, tubes, fluid circuit, pumps, valves, heaters, relief devices, controls, insulation and interfaces. Do not assess the concrete block in isolation.
- Request project-specific performance: ask for usable thermal capacity, charge and discharge rates, standby loss, ramp limits, cycle assumptions and guaranteed outlet conditions for the site’s ambient conditions.
- Map every hazard: complete a hazard-and-operability review covering fluid release, over-temperature, over-pressure, loss of flow, electrical faults, fire exposure from adjacent plant and confined-space or maintenance risks.
- Check codes and approvals: have the authority having jurisdiction, fire engineer, pressure-equipment specialist and insurer review the design before procurement. Requirements vary by country, state or municipality and by the selected fluid.
- Design isolation and detection: provide independent high-temperature and high-pressure trips, emergency stops, leak detection, fire detection, ventilation, drainage or containment, separation distances and controlled access.
- Prove resilience claims: demonstrate what remains online when a module, pump, heater, control panel or fluid loop is unavailable. Treat parallel boilers as thermal redundancy, not as UPS capacity.
- Plan the life-cycle work: document inspection intervals, fluid sampling, calibration, relief-device testing, spare parts, outage procedures, operator training and end-of-life disposal or replacement.
- Commission under abnormal conditions: test cold start, rapid shutdown, loss of electrical power, loss of circulation, sensor disagreement, simulated leak and fire-alarm integration before accepting the system.
Bottom line for data-center decision makers
The concrete-and-steel storage block is inherently less prone to battery-cell fire than lithium-ion chemistry because it stores sensible heat without an electrochemical thermal-runaway pathway. That advantage does not make the entire plant fireproof, maintenance-free or suitable for server backup by itself. Treat a concrete thermal battery as an industrial heat-storage asset: engineer the fluid, pressure, electrical and control systems with the same rigor applied to any high-temperature plant, and retain a purpose-built electrical UPS and generation architecture for critical IT loads unless a separately engineered heat-to-power system proves it can meet those requirements.
