That is not confirmed as a current, universal rule. Amazon’s current MK30 technology page says the aircraft can operate below freezing and above 110°F, while Prime Air says every flight still depends on live weather monitoring and a site-specific go/no-go decision.
What the 104°F figure actually says
In a May 7, 2024 report, WIRED quoted Calsee Hendrickson, Amazon’s director of product and program management for Prime Air: “We won’t take orders when the temperature gets above 104 degrees.” The statement referred to planned service around Tolleson, Arizona, and described when Amazon would accept an order—not necessarily the aircraft’s maximum operating temperature.
Because the statement is dated and tied to a particular launch context, it should not be treated as proof of a current cutoff everywhere Amazon offers drone delivery.
What Amazon currently publishes about heat
Amazon’s current MK30 technology information, accessed September 28, 2026, says the aircraft operates below freezing and above 110°F. That is a capability claim for the drone itself. It does not promise that customers will receive deliveries at every temperature, nor does it establish that Amazon accepts orders whenever the thermometer is below or above a particular number.

These numbers measure different things, so they cannot be combined into a single “drone shutdown temperature.” Public information does not explain whether the 2024 order policy was changed, replaced, or limited to that launch area.
Why a hot day can still stop a delivery
Prime Air says availability is determined through real-time weather monitoring and a go/no-go process. Amazon lists high winds, low visibility, and moderate or heavy precipitation as reasons flights may be suspended. A local heat policy could also be more conservative than the MK30’s engineering capability because operations must account for the delivery center, route, landing area, airspace approvals and other safety limits.

The MK30 is electric, cruises at more than 60 mph, and is designed to fly up to 7.5 miles from its delivery center. Amazon says it can fly in light rain and uses obstacle detection; if it detects a hazard, it may alter course or return without delivering. Prime Air operates as an FAA Part 135-certificated air carrier using FAA-approved beyond-visual-line-of-sight authorizations, with planned routes and flight monitors.
Where Prime Air service is available
Drone delivery is not a nationwide service. In December 2024, Amazon described MK30 operations in the Phoenix-area West Valley and College Station, with eligibility limited by delivery location and item. The launch description covered items weighing up to five pounds and promised delivery in 60 minutes or less in eligible areas.

FAA review materials identify the MK30 as electric-powered and list an 83.2-pound maximum takeoff weight. Those materials are tied to specific site reviews; they are not a single operating rule for every Prime Air location.
How to tell whether heat is blocking your order
- Enter an eligible delivery address and add a qualifying item to your Amazon cart.
- At checkout, look for a Prime Air or drone-delivery option and its displayed delivery window.
- If the option is missing, check the address, item eligibility and available delivery methods before assuming temperature is the cause.
- If the option disappears or changes during checkout, use another delivery method or try later; Amazon’s public pages do not provide a current numeric heat threshold for each site.
What is still not public
- A current numeric heat cutoff for Tolleson or other Prime Air locations.
- Whether the 104°F order-acceptance statement remains in force anywhere.
- How many deliveries or operating hours are lost to heat.
- An official explanation reconciling the 2024 order cutoff with the current “above 110°F” MK30 capability statement.
The safest interpretation is therefore narrow: extreme heat may make drone delivery unavailable in a particular place and time, but the public evidence does not establish a universal summer shutdown rule. Customer-facing availability at checkout is the practical, current test.
