An Arduino countdown timer with adjustable settings needs three things: a way to choose the duration, a way to start or stop the countdown, and a display that shows the remaining time. The simplest documented approach here uses up/down buttons with a TM1637 display; keypad entry and potentiometer adjustment are alternatives, not wiring variations to combine with that build.

Choose the timer design that matches how you want to set time

These are separate project architectures, not interchangeable parts of one schematic. Pick one input method and follow its project’s wiring and code as a unit.

Design Input and display Completion or saved setting Source
Rechargeable game timer Three tactile switches adjust or control a Pro Mini and TM1637 display. A passive buzzer signals the end; the selected duration is stored in EEPROM. Arduino Project Hub project, May 16, 2021
Programmable timer 4×4 keypad for numeric input and an eight-digit MAX7219 display, with an Arduino Uno. Completion behavior is not stated in the cited project summary. Arduino Project Hub project, August 12, 2023
Two-button timer One button sets time and another starts the countdown; an Uno drives a TM1637 display. An LED flashes at zero. The tutorial says another module, such as a relay, can be used instead of the LED. Visuino tutorial
Potentiometer timer A variable resistor adjusts a seven-segment timer with a 7447 driver; three buttons provide start, pause, and reset. The project describes an adjustable interval from 0 to 99 seconds. Arduino Project Hub project, 2024

The cited project summaries establish the parts and behaviors described above, but do not give a controlled comparison of accuracy, cost, or ease of use. Choose based on how you prefer to enter time and what kind of completion alert you need.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • An Arduino-compatible Pro Mini board
  • A TM1637 display module
  • Three tactile push-button switches
  • A passive buzzer
  • Breadboard and jumper wires, as needed for the chosen assembly

The cited project’s architecture uses buttons to adjust the duration and control the countdown. Its code tracks elapsed time with millis() and writes the selected duration to EEPROM. Use the project’s own circuit and sketch for exact pin assignments; do not substitute wiring from the Uno, MAX7219, or potentiometer projects.

If you prefer direct numeric entry, the MAX7219 project instead lists an Arduino Uno, an eight-digit MAX7219 display, and a 4×4 keypad. For the two-button Visuino design, the listed components are an Uno, TM1637 display, two button modules, a 1 kΩ resistor, an LED, jumper wires, and a breadboard. Match every component to the selected design’s schematic rather than assembling a hybrid bill of materials.

How the countdown and settings work

Button adjustment and start/stop

In the rechargeable timer design, up/down controls change the selected duration, while another button starts or stops the countdown. This is convenient when you want to adjust time in increments instead of typing a number. The project description does not establish a universal increment size, so use the behavior specified by its sketch.

Numeric keypad entry

A 4×4 keypad provides a direct-entry model: enter the desired value with the keypad and view it on the MAX7219 display. Follow that project’s own input handling and pin map; the cited summary identifies the components but does not specify the exact entry sequence.

Potentiometer adjustment

The 2024 project uses a variable resistor to adjust an interval from 0 to 99 seconds, with separate buttons for start, pause, and reset. That range is specific to this design and should not be assumed for other adjustable timers.

Saving a selected duration

The rechargeable project uses EEPROM.read and EEPROM.write so its selected duration remains saved. Persistence is a feature of that project’s implementation, not an automatic property of every Arduino timer or sketch.

Display and completion feedback

A TM1637 module appears in two of the documented designs, while the keypad-entry design uses a MAX7219 module with an eight-digit display. These display choices belong to their respective circuits. For an end-of-countdown signal, the rechargeable timer uses a passive buzzer; the Visuino example flashes an LED when the display reaches zero.

The Visuino tutorial mentions that a relay or another module could replace the LED, but that statement is not a wiring or safety guide for a powered load. A relay-controlled device requires its own appropriate circuit design and safety information.

What the project examples do—and do not—establish

The cited pages document example builds and code approaches. They do not report measured timing accuracy or tested reliability, so there is no evidence here for a particular error rate or long-term performance claim. For a timer used in a situation where exact timing matters, validate the finished hardware under its intended conditions rather than relying on an unmeasured tutorial example.
