Ardour 9.0 launched on February 5, 2026, with a major focus on MIDI and clip-based work: a dedicated pianoroll, direct MIDI cue editing, and recording straight into cue slots. It supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Ardour’s homepage lists 9.8 as the current release as of October 1, 2026, so 9.0 is best understood as a major milestone—not the newest build.
What changed in Ardour 9.0?
Ardour describes 9.0 as a major release with substantive, user-requested features. Its headline additions are Region FX, clip recording and editing, a touch-sensitive GUI, and new MIDI workflows. The release also includes dozens of bug fixes and improved macOS GUI performance. Ardour 9.0 release notes
A separate pianoroll for MIDI editing
You can open the pianoroll in its own window or display it as a pane at the bottom of Ardour’s main window. Its editing behavior is intended to be close to the main timeline, so you can work on MIDI material in a dedicated view rather than relying only on the timeline presentation.
The pianoroll can also overlay MIDI automation, including velocity and controller parameters. That puts note editing and relevant performance data in the same view. Ardour 9.0 feature notes

Record MIDI directly into cue slots
Ardour 9.0 lets you record directly into a cue slot. You can specify a duration—for example, four bars—or record until you stop. When recording ends, the material begins playback at the next quantization point. Cue contents can also be edited directly, making the cue workflow more useful for building and revising musical ideas without treating every part as a conventional timeline region.
Other workflow additions
Region FX, clip editing, and touch-oriented interface changes broaden the release beyond MIDI. The release notes also list new MIDI binding maps and fixes across the application. For macOS users, Ardour says GUI drawing is significantly faster, particularly on dense pages such as the mixer. A fallback drawing model is available for monitor configurations where the newer implementation misbehaves. Ardour 9.0 release notes

Which MIDI controllers have new binding maps?

- Behringer CMD LC-1
- Novation Circuit
- Nektar Impact GXP and LX
- Arturia Keylab mk2 models
- LAudio/Worlde EasyControl.9
A binding map provides mappings for a supported controller; it does not mean that every controller function or configuration is identical across models. Ardour’s 9.0 notes name the devices above. Ardour 9.0 release notes

Ardour 9.8 adds initial support for keys and scales. Its release notes describe visualizing out-of-scale notes and options to prevent them or automatically adjust them. The notes also say complex tuning support will likely span multiple releases, so 9.8 should not be read as a promise of complete microtonal or alternate-tuning support. Ardour 9.8 release notes
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who benefits most from the 9.0 changes?
The update is especially relevant if you compose or perform with MIDI clips, want to record into cues, or prefer a dedicated piano-roll view for editing notes and automation. Controller users may also benefit if they own one of the devices with a new binding map. The release is less significant for someone whose workflow does not use MIDI, cues, clips, touch interaction, or the macOS GUI changes.
