Arctos Robotics was presented as a do-it-yourself, mostly 3D-printed six-axis robot arm intended to make robotics more accessible to hobbyists. Its “build a robotic arm like you build LEGOs” line is an aspiration, not a promise of LEGO-level simplicity: the report describing the project explicitly says assembly is not quite that easy.

What is the Arctos robot arm?

Arctos is a build-it-yourself robot-arm project associated with a one-person startup. A Hackster.io article published around 2023 described a design made primarily from 3D-printed components plus purchased mechanical and electronic parts. The article framed the project as an effort to put a capable robot arm within reach of hobbyists, rather than a ready-to-use consumer product. Hackster.io’s project report is the source for the specifications and build details below; they are reported claims, not independently verified results.

What the reported design can do

Hackster.io reported six degrees of freedom, a 23.6-inch reach, and a payload close to 18 pounds. Those figures describe the project’s stated specifications in that article, not independently measured performance. They should not be treated as current verified ratings for a finished or assembled arm.

Six degrees of freedom means the design was described as having six independently controlled axes of motion. That can support varied positioning and orientation, but the article’s figures alone do not establish accuracy, repeatability, speed, safe working load, or performance under a particular setup. Those details matter when comparing arms or deciding whether a design suits a specific job.

What you need to build one

The reported design combines printed structure with purchased components. The creator’s prototypes reportedly used PLA with 30 percent infill; this is a prototype detail from the article, not a universal print setting or a confirmed requirement for every build.

  • 3D-printed components: most of the arm’s structural parts, printed from files associated with the project.
  • Mechanical parts: bearings, motors, and fasteners.
  • Electronics: the article named an Arduino Mega 2560 development board among the required electronics.
  • Build tools and skills: access to a compatible 3D printer and the ability to assemble and configure a multi-part mechanical and electronic project. The report does not establish a definitive tool list or skill prerequisite.

Before sourcing components, check the current project documentation and bill of materials for exact part numbers and compatibility. The historical article does not provide enough information to recommend specific listings or confirm that every part remains interchangeable.

What files and control software were reported?

The Hackster.io report described a single download containing CAD files in multiple formats, an illustrated step-by-step assembly manual, support for GRBL through a six-axis GRBL port, ROS-related files, and a MATLAB-based forward-kinematics controller. These are features reported at the time of publication; current downloads, software compatibility, and documentation access have not been confirmed.

That collection suggests the project was intended for hands-on assembly and experimentation, rather than being a plug-and-play arm. The specific controller, firmware, and file versions available now are unresolved, so verify them before planning a build around a particular workflow.

How much did the Arctos arm cost?

Hackster.io quoted an approximate parts estimate of $400, described as relying mostly on AliExpress and local vendors. That was a project estimate reported around 2023, not a current shopping list or guaranteed total. Prices, shipping, availability, and component compatibility can change, and the figure does not establish what a build would cost today.

Are the Arctos files still available, and what license applies?

The Hackster.io article said the CAD files were offered under a personal, non-commercial license, with a commercial license available at a higher but unspecified price. It also reported a €50 personal-license price and a temporary discounted price of €39.95 at the time. These are historical terms and prices, not confirmed current offers.

Is it really as easy to build as LEGO?

No—not based on the report. The slogan “build a robotic arm like you build LEGOs” describes the project’s accessibility goal. The same Hackster.io article cautioned that assembly is not quite that easy. A project involving printed parts, bearings, motors, fasteners, electronics, and software setup is a substantial hobby build, not a simple snap-together kit.
