HAMSTER’s Arcade Archives is a series of individually released classic arcade games, not one game or a single emulator app. Each release pairs a reproduced arcade game with a modern interface that may add configurable controls and display options, save and rewind features, score challenges, and online rankings. Which features you get depends on the specific game and whether you buy its original Arcade Archives edition or an Arcade Archives 2 edition.
What is Arcade Archives?
Arcade Archives brings classic arcade games to modern platforms while aiming to preserve how the original games played. HAMSTER describes the series as faithfully reproducing arcade classics and says it began in May 2014. The official series site presents it as a growing catalogue of separate titles, each with its own platform availability and feature set.
That distinction matters when shopping: “Arcade Archives” identifies a series, not a universal feature specification. A particular game might have one version on one console, a newer Arcade Archives 2 edition on another, or different options across editions. Check the individual listing and its platform’s store page before buying.
The series had reached 500 titles with the release of Space Invaders on December 25, 2025, according to HAMSTER’s January 2026 announcement. That is a dated milestone, not a claim about the catalogue’s current total. HAMSTER’s announcement on Xbox Wire also describes the weekly release schedule and breadth of the lineup as defining features.

How does Arcade Archives emulation work?
For players, the practical idea is simple: the arcade game is presented on current hardware, with a menu around it for available settings and optional modern conveniences. It is useful to think of two layers—the reproduced game and HAMSTER’s interface—rather than treating every setting as part of the original cabinet.
Difficulty settings and gameplay rules belong to the particular game when they reproduce options that game offered. By contrast, choices such as a CRT-style screen filter, a save point, or rewind change how the modern release is displayed or played. They can help a game feel more comfortable or make practice less punishing, but they do not mean the arcade original had those features.
HAMSTER’s published guides describe what players can configure, but the available official material does not establish one technical method or accuracy guarantee for every release. It does not provide a series-wide input-lag figure, an emulation-accuracy percentage, or a universal account of the arcade hardware or software used. Avoid reading “faithful reproduction” as a published numerical benchmark.

There are title-specific details. In a discussion of Space Invaders, HAMSTER director Tetsu Masuda said the team collected original arcade boards and recorded their sounds directly from them. That account applies to that title; it should not be generalized into a claim about every game in the series. The interview appears in HAMSTER’s Xbox Wire article.

What is the difference between Arcade Archives modes?
Modes are not interchangeable: some are for configurable play, some impose rules for competitive scoring, and one newer option focuses on finishing quickly. The details below reflect HAMSTER’s documentation, including its specific Ridge Racer example; availability and settings vary by title.
| Mode | What you do | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Original | Play the game with the options and conveniences offered for that release. | Available settings depend on the title and edition. |
| Hi Score | Submit a result from a single play for an online ranking. | Some settings available in Original may be fixed. |
| Caravan | Compete for score within a time limit. | HAMSTER’s Ridge Racer guide specifies five minutes for its Caravan challenge; this is not a series-wide rule. |
| Time Attack | Try to finish the game quickly. | Introduced as an Arcade Archives 2 mode; implementation depends on the game. |
| Network | Play with other people over a network in supported titles. | Support is title-specific. HAMSTER says Ridge Racer is single-player and does not include Network Mode. |
Hi Score and Caravan are structured challenges, not simply alternate names for unrestricted practice. Their fixed or timed rules give players a defined contest. Also distinguish a game’s own challenge from a wrapper mode: HAMSTER’s Ridge Racer guide describes an in-game T.T. challenge separately from Arcade Archives 2’s Time Attack Mode. See the Ridge Racer guide for that title’s mode descriptions.
Can you save or rewind in Arcade Archives?
Some releases let you preserve progress or undo a recent mistake, but the number of save slots and the rewind implementation are title- and edition-specific. HAMSTER’s Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer guide is a concrete example, not a promise that every game offers the same tools.

Saving and loading
In that Ridge Racer release, Original Mode has four regular save slots and one quick-save slot. HAMSTER documents saving and loading through the options menu, as well as quick actions that can be assigned to buttons. The interface therefore offers a way to interrupt or resume a run that the original arcade cabinet was not designed to provide. The exact menu labels and button assignments may differ in other games.

Rewind
The same guide describes a short rewind that reverses only a few seconds of play. It must be assigned to a button before use. This is a recovery aid for a recent mistake, not unlimited rollback or a substitute for saving progress. HAMSTER’s guide lists the save and rewind controls for Ridge Racer.
Which control and screen options are available?
Available options can make an arcade game fit a modern controller and display, but there is no one universal setup across the series. HAMSTER’s descriptions mention button remapping and rapid-fire options; its detailed guides also cover saving control layouts and arcade-controller presets where offered.
An arcade-style controller is an optional way to approach games designed around arcade controls, not a stated requirement. The cited material does not establish that a particular controller model works with every game or console, so check the exact hardware and platform compatibility before buying an accessory.
Screen options may let players adjust position, size, or orientation. Scanlines, CRT-style curvature, and noise are visual presentation effects; they are distinct from VRR. HAMSTER says that, in supported play, a variable refresh rate display and enabled console settings can bring refresh behavior closer to that of the original title. VRR is not a guarantee of perfect reproduction, and it does not mean that the screen filter is recreating the physical characteristics of a CRT. The Ridge Racer guide describes its display options.

Is Arcade Archives 2 different from Arcade Archives?
Arcade Archives 2 extends the series with a redesigned interface and additional features, but it does not make every title identical or every feature universal. HAMSTER introduced the new framework alongside Ridge Racer in 2025. Its newer-series features include Time Attack, supported Network play, expanded save options, rewind, and VRR support; which of them appear depends on the release.
HAMSTER’s comparison of ACA2NEOGEO versions, for example, describes a move from one save slot in an earlier version to five slots in a newer one, plus rewind of approximately five seconds. These figures describe that comparison, not all Arcade Archives or Arcade Archives 2 titles. Similarly, a game that is single-player—such as the documented Ridge Racer release—does not gain online multiplayer simply because Network Mode exists in the broader series.
When comparing editions, look at the game’s individual feature list rather than assuming that “2” means a fixed bundle of upgrades. Check the supported platforms, named modes, save and rewind details, display options, and whether an edition is available for your console and region. HAMSTER’s Arcade Archives 2 announcement describes the new series framework.
How do you choose the right Arcade Archives release?
Start with the exact game you want, then verify that the edition and platform match your expectations. The series label alone does not tell you what language the original game uses, whether your save data will carry over, or which challenges are included.

- Confirm the title and edition. Check whether the listing is Arcade Archives or Arcade Archives 2, then read its feature details. Do not infer mode support from another game in the series.
- Check platform and region. A title may be listed for different consoles or storefronts in separate editions. Availability and displayed price can vary by platform and territory; use the current listing for the platform and region where you intend to buy.
- Check the original game language separately from menu language. Store listings may state which languages are supported for menus or manuals without implying that the arcade game itself is translated. HAMSTER’s Swimmer listing, for instance, says that release contains the Japanese game version.
- Verify save compatibility before upgrading. HAMSTER explicitly warns that the two Prehistoric Isle editions do not share save data. A newer edition should not be assumed to import progress from the older one.
- Match features to how you play. If you want open-ended practice, inspect Original Mode’s settings. If you want a leaderboard challenge, check for Hi Score or Caravan. If you want a network game or a timed completion contest, confirm that the individual title includes Network Mode or Time Attack.
HAMSTER’s official Prehistoric Isle listing is an example of why edition-level checking matters: it shows editions across Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with distinct displayed US-dollar prices and a warning about saves. The listing also describes an ownership discount with conditions tied to qualifying purchase order and account. Those details are listing-specific and can change; they are not a series-wide price or discount policy.
For any purchase, read the current storefront listing for the exact game, edition, platform, and region. A console’s store page is the practical place to confirm current availability and price; a publisher page may help clarify game language, save compatibility, or the feature set. Neither should be generalized to other releases without checking their own details.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Arcade Archives games are there now?
HAMSTER announced that the December 25, 2025 release of Space Invaders brought the catalogue to 500 titles. That figure marks the announcement date; it is not a verified live count for November 2026.
Does Arcade Archives publish games every week?
HAMSTER describes a weekly release schedule as one of the series’ defining features. That is the publisher’s stated schedule, not a guarantee that a particular title will appear on every platform or in every region on a given date.
Does Arcade Archives have a published input-lag or accuracy rating?
The official material cited for the series does not give a series-wide input-lag measurement or an emulation-accuracy percentage. A title-specific account, such as HAMSTER’s description of sound recording for Space Invaders, should not be treated as a technical rating for every release.
