Arabic source code is read by a parser in logical character order, but displayed according to Unicode’s bidirectional algorithm. Those are separate layers: text that looks reversed or has punctuation in an unexpected place may still have an ordinary underlying character sequence. Whether Arabic characters are allowed in identifiers—and how equivalent-looking names compare—is a separate decision made by each programming language.

Why Arabic text can look different in a code editor

Unicode stores text in logical order: the sequence of characters as represented in the file or string. The Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm (UBA) determines how that sequence is arranged for display. Arabic runs generally display right to left, while embedded Latin text, identifiers, and numbers may display left to right. A single line can therefore contain several directional runs without its underlying source being reversed.

The current Unicode Standard Annex #9 is version 52, dated 2026-09-01. It describes the distinction directly: “When working with bidirectional text, the characters are still interpreted in logical order—only the display is affected.” The display algorithm is not a programming-language lexer and does not decide which characters form a token. Unicode Standard Annex #9

Why punctuation and numbers seem misplaced

The UBA considers character direction properties, including strong, weak, and neutral classes. Punctuation, brackets, and many symbols are neutral, so their displayed position can depend on the surrounding text rather than on an assumed fixed direction. Digit behavior also depends on context, script, and digit set; Arabic text using different digit sets need not appear identical around Latin text or punctuation. The Unicode FAQ explains these contextual effects. Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm FAQ

Consequently, a comma or closing bracket that looks unexpected is not proof that the source characters were reordered or that the parser read them backward. To determine what the program sees, inspect the logical character sequence and the language’s tokens, not only the rendered line.

Arabic identifier rules are language-specific

Unicode provides identifier properties, not one universal rule that every language must adopt. UAX #31 recommends XID_Start for the first character and XID_Continue for subsequent characters, while allowing languages to define a more specific profile. Combining marks may be permitted in continuation positions. Acceptance can also depend on the language implementation’s Unicode data version.

Do not assume every Arabic letter, combining mark, joiner, or Arabic presentation-form character is valid in every language. Check the reference for the exact language and version. UAX #31 describes XID_Start and XID_Continue as improved lexical classes that incorporate its NFKC modifications. Unicode Standard Annex #31

Rust and Python make different choices

Language reference Identifier rule and Unicode version Normalization and controls
Rust Reference (XID_Start | _) XID_Continue*; the cited rules use Unicode 17.0. Identifiers are normalized to NFC for equality. ZWNJ and ZWJ are rejected in identifiers.
Python 3.14.7 Identifier sets are based on XID_Start and XID_Continue. Identifiers are closed under NFKC normalization, applied at the lexical level. Runtime APIs receiving names as strings do not necessarily normalize their arguments.

These differences matter when reviewing source, comparing names, or passing names through runtime APIs. A language’s lexical treatment of an identifier does not automatically define how every API that accepts a string will treat that value. Consult the specific language documentation: Rust Reference: Identifiers and Python 3.14.7 lexical analysis: Identifiers.

Why whole-file normalization is unsafe

Normalization can make canonically or compatibly equivalent text compare in a language-defined way, but applying it indiscriminately to source before parsing is not a safe general fix. Unicode’s identifier guidance says parsing should first locate identifiers, then apply normalization or case-mapping rules as appropriate. The language’s lexer and specification determine where and how normalization applies; a whole-file transformation can affect text outside identifiers or alter the input before the parser has identified its tokens.

Follow the target language’s normalization semantics rather than imposing one globally. Also distinguish source-level identifier equality from runtime lookup: Python’s lexical normalization rule, for example, does not mean every runtime string passed as a name is normalized for you. Unicode’s programming-language identifier guidance discusses this sequencing and the language-specific nature of normalization. Unicode identifier normalization guidance

How to review bidi controls and confusing source

Unicode formatting controls can influence visual layout while remaining difficult to notice in an ordinary editor view. Unicode security guidance describes how mixed-direction text can appear visually confusable with a different logical sequence. This is a reason to make suspicious controls visible during review—not a reason to treat Arabic or right-to-left source code as inherently unsafe. Unicode Security Considerations

  • When a line looks suspicious, inspect its logical character order or code points rather than relying on the rendered appearance alone.
  • Reveal invisible formatting controls in the editor or another inspection view where possible.
  • Check how the actual language toolchain tokenizes the line; display behavior alone does not establish parser behavior.
  • For identifiers, verify the language and version’s accepted start and continuation characters, normalization form, and treatment of joiners or other format characters.

Arabic presentation forms and invisible controls deserve particular care. Unicode normalization guidance recommends excluding Arabic presentation forms from identifiers, but acceptance and handling remain matters of the language’s profile and implementation. Do not treat that recommendation as a universal guarantee about every compiler.
