Apple says it designs products for longevity by balancing durability, repairability, environmental impact, repair access, safety, security, and privacy. Repair is part of that approach, but Apple does not describe every component as something that should always be separately replaceable. Its June 2024 paper explains how the company says it makes those trade-offs; it is Apple’s account of its principles, not independent proof of how every product performs.
What Apple means by designing for longevity
Apple describes longevity as a company-wide effort that starts early in product development, before prototypes. The company says teams use historical customer-use data and predictions about future use to decide how products should be designed and which components are more likely to need service. Its environmental FAQ also describes longevity as involving hardware durability, ongoing software support, and repair services.
In its June 2024 Longevity by Design paper, Apple frames the challenge as balancing several goals rather than maximizing repairability in isolation. John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, wrote: “Repairability is an essential component of longevity, yet optimizing for repairability alone may not yield the best outcome for our customers or the environment.”
How Apple says it weighs repairability against other priorities
Apple says components should be evaluated according to how likely they are to need repair and what design choices would mean for durability, manufacturing impact, and access to service. It also identifies customer safety, security, and privacy as considerations. The company’s position is that a design choice that makes one part easier to replace can have other costs, so the appropriate solution may differ by component.

Back glass on the iPhone 15 lineup
Apple’s 2024 paper says the iPhone 15 lineup had 11 key repairable modules, including the back glass, battery, display, and cameras. Apple says making the back glass an individual repair module lowered repair costs by over 60%. These are Apple’s figures for that lineup and its cited case study; they should not be generalized to other iPhone models or treated as independent measurements.
The iPhone charging port case study
Apple says the actual service rate for the iPhone charging port in its case study was below 0.1%. The company argues that building the port as an individually replaceable component would add parts and manufacturing emissions, without enough repair benefit at that service rate. This is Apple’s rationale for that specific example, not a universal claim that charging ports do not need repair.

Where Apple says customers can get repairs
Apple lists four repair routes: Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers, and Self Service Repair. Its environmental FAQ also says repair at a customer’s home or office is available in select U.S. cities; availability depends on location, so check Apple’s current service information for local coverage.
Apple presents self-service as an option for people with the knowledge and experience to handle electronics repairs, not as the right choice for everyone. In its 2021 announcement, Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer at the time, said: “Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed.” That announcement also described professional repair providers as the safest and most reliable option for the vast majority of customers.

How to check whether self-service repair is appropriate
If you are considering a repair yourself, Apple’s instructions are model- and repair-specific. Start with the manual for your exact device and the repair you intend to perform, rather than assuming a general guide or parts kit will fit.
- Open Apple’s Self Service Repair page and find the repair manual for your exact iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple display, or Beats model.
- Read the manual before ordering anything. Apple says it identifies the repair steps, parts, tools, and materials required.
- Use the manual’s ID when purchasing genuine parts and tools. Apple says its Self Service Repair Store offers professional-grade tools for sale or rental and is operated by a third-party provider authorized by Apple.
- If the repair is beyond your experience, consider an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider instead. Check current eligibility and local availability with Apple.
Apple also points customers to Genuine Parts Distributors. Eligible devices, available parts, tools, and service coverage can change, so consult Apple’s current support information before making a repair plan.

What Apple’s published position does—and does not—establish
Apple’s paper and support pages explain the company’s stated design principles, repair routes, and selected examples. They do not independently establish how Apple’s repairability compares with other manufacturers, or prove that every product meets the principles in practice. A broader comparison would need evidence about separately serviceable components, access to parts and manuals, diagnostic and tool requirements, and the practical availability of authorized, independent, and self-service repair.
