Apple’s first foldable iPhone is called iPhone Duo, not iPhone Fold. Apple says U.S. preorders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23. The U.S. starting price is $1,999. The announced design pairs a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch inner display, but independent reviews have not yet established how it holds up in everyday use.
What is Apple’s foldable iPhone called?
Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. “iPhone Fold” was a pre-announcement label; the announced product name is iPhone Duo. The Apple announcement describes it as the company’s first foldable iPhone. The Associated Press also reported the launch and identified the device as Duo.

When does iPhone Duo come out?
Apple’s published schedule sets the U.S. preorder opening for 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16, 2026, and availability for Friday, October 23. Apple says 28 additional countries and regions follow on October 30; it lists more than 70 countries and regions for the first availability date. These are announced dates, not a guarantee that every buyer will find stock or receive delivery on launch day.
The Associated Press launch report independently covered the announcement. For practical preorder preparation, Tom’s Guide’s October 6 guide discusses getting ready to order; Apple’s announcement remains the source for the official dates.

How much does iPhone Duo cost?
Apple lists the U.S. starting price at $1,999. Storage options are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Apple’s announcement does not state the prices for each higher-capacity configuration, so the starting price should not be read as the cost of every model. Prices and availability outside the United States may differ.
What are the screens and main features?
Two Super Retina XDR displays
Apple lists a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Both are Super Retina XDR panels with ProMotion, Always On, and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits, according to Apple. The company says a nano-texture finish on the inner display minimizes glare and crease visibility. That is a manufacturer claim; the available sources do not provide an independent assessment of the crease or screen durability.

Foldable software and performance
Apple lists the A20 Pro processor and iOS 27.1 availability. The Associated Press reports that Duo supports split-screen multitasking. These details describe the announced product, not independently measured performance or a review of its software in real-world use.
Body and water resistance
Apple describes a titanium body and precision hinge, and gives the phone an IP68 rating under controlled laboratory conditions. An IP rating does not establish how well a particular hinge or folding screen will withstand long-term use. Independent durability testing is not available in the cited coverage.

What is still unknown about iPhone Duo?
The launch announcement and early coverage establish the name, scheduled rollout, listed price, and announced specifications, but they do not answer several questions that matter when choosing a foldable phone. Independent hands-on findings are still needed for:
- How visible the crease is in typical lighting and use.
- Hinge and display durability over time, and repair terms.
- Battery life, charging behavior, weight, thickness, and camera performance.
- Everyday performance and how useful the multitasking features are in practice.
The AP report quotes CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood describing foldables as a niche category and estimates they account for less than 5% of the overall smartphone market. That figure is Wood’s estimate as reported by the AP, not a market measurement independently verified by the sources cited here.
