Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri and other Apple Intelligence experiences, but the documented arrangement does not make Siri simply a ChatGPT product. Nor do the official statements establish that Microsoft was upset by Apple’s deal. As of Apple’s September 2026 announcement, Apple described a separate, next-generation Siri AI powered by Apple Foundation Models developed with Google Gemini, while ChatGPT remains an extension Siri can call on for some requests.
What Apple’s ChatGPT partnership actually adds to Siri
Apple’s integration lets Siri call on ChatGPT when a request could benefit from its capabilities. OpenAI says ChatGPT is also integrated into experiences across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, including features for understanding images and documents. The idea is to access those capabilities within Apple’s software rather than switch to a separate ChatGPT app for every task. OpenAI’s Apple Intelligence–Siri FAQ describes the integration.
That does not mean Siri itself is just ChatGPT, or that every Siri request is sent to OpenAI. Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement describes Siri AI as powered by the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, developed in collaboration with Google and Gemini. Apple’s announcement and OpenAI’s support documentation describe distinct roles: Apple’s models power the announced Siri AI, while ChatGPT is an extension Siri can invoke. Apple’s announcement and OpenAI’s FAQ provide those descriptions.
When Siri sends a request to ChatGPT
Siri may offer ChatGPT for a request where it could help, such as a question about a photo or document. Ordinarily, Siri asks permission before sending the request. Users can adjust the confirmation setting, but Siri still asks for permission before sending a file. Those controls matter: using the extension is not the same as automatically routing every interaction to ChatGPT. OpenAI’s FAQ explains the confirmation behavior.

Which iPhones and regions can use the extension?
Apple Support’s iOS 27 guide says Apple Intelligence requires an enabled device: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later. Availability also depends on language and region; usage limits may apply, and the ChatGPT extension is available only where ChatGPT itself is available. These are support details for the cited iOS 27 guide, not a guarantee of access on every device or in every location. Check Apple’s current iPhone guide for applicable requirements.
What Microsoft and OpenAI have said about their partnership
Microsoft’s April 27, 2026 announcement says it remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, with OpenAI products shipping first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot and chooses not to support the required capabilities. The announcement also says OpenAI can serve products to customers across any cloud provider, and that Microsoft’s license to OpenAI intellectual property for models and products is non-exclusive through 2032.

The financial terms Microsoft disclosed differ in direction and duration: Microsoft will no longer pay revenue share to OpenAI, while OpenAI’s revenue-share payments to Microsoft continue through 2030 at the same percentage, subject to a total cap. These terms describe the partnership’s published structure; they do not establish Microsoft’s private response to Apple’s integration. See Microsoft’s announcement.
Earlier, on February 27, 2026, OpenAI and Microsoft jointly said, “The partnership remains strong and central.” That is the companies’ public characterization of their relationship, not independent evidence of how Microsoft viewed Apple’s arrangement. Their joint statement does not substantiate the claim that Microsoft was upset.

Was Microsoft actually upset about Apple’s OpenAI deal?
The available official statements do not establish that Microsoft was upset. They document Apple’s ChatGPT integration and the terms and public framing of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership, but do not disclose Microsoft’s internal reaction to Apple’s deal. Unless the original report supplies credible, attributable evidence for that reaction, “upsetting Microsoft” should be treated as an unverified claim—not a confirmed consequence of the partnership.
