Apple Watch Series 12 is the straightforward pick for an iPhone owner. Samsung Galaxy Watch9 or Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the more natural fit for Android, especially if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone. If you use another Android brand, check which features work on your exact phone before buying.
Which watch works with your phone?
Phone compatibility is the first filter because a watch’s advertised features may depend on its companion phone, app, or operating system. Samsung says Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 work with Android phones, but several ecosystem features specifically require a Galaxy phone. Its Watch8 product page also identifies some features that are unavailable on non-Samsung Android devices. Check Samsung’s Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 announcement and the Galaxy Watch product information for the requirements relevant to the model you are considering.
- You use an iPhone: Start with Apple Watch Series 12.
- You use a Samsung Galaxy phone: Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 are the natural Samsung options; confirm the particular features you want are supported.
- You use another Android phone: Samsung watches are compatible, but verify feature-by-feature support for your phone before paying. Android compatibility does not guarantee access to every Samsung feature.
Which models are current?

Apple announced Series 12 in September 2026 and said store availability would begin September 18, 2026. Apple lists aluminum, titanium, and ceramic versions. See Apple’s Series 12 announcement. Samsung’s model descriptions are manufacturer positioning, not independent performance results; see its Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 announcement.
Which one should you buy for fitness and everyday use?
Choose Apple Watch Series 12 if you use an iPhone
It is the direct choice among these models for an iPhone owner. Apple highlights health sensing, fitness, and safety features, but the available information does not establish that Series 12 is more accurate or better for exercise than Samsung’s watches.

Choose Galaxy Watch9 for everyday wellness
Samsung presents Watch9 as an everyday wellness watch, with emphasis on sleep, exercise, cardiovascular insights, and recovery. That positioning may suit someone who wants a general-purpose watch rather than a model primarily aimed at demanding training.
Consider Galaxy Watch Ultra2 for structured or demanding training
Samsung describes Ultra2 as intended for workout tracking and structured training in demanding environments. This is a use-case distinction from Samsung, not a verified claim that it outperforms Series 12 or Watch9 in outdoor conditions.
Samsung lists features across its watch models including heart monitoring, sleep coaching, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, automatic workout detection, body composition, and cycle tracking. Which functions are available depends on the model, phone, app, and feature-specific conditions. Its watch comparison page is the place to check a specific feature rather than choosing by sensor or feature count alone.
What health-feature limits should you check?
Health features should be treated as limited monitoring or informational tools, not as a substitute for clinical diagnosis or care. Requirements can vary by model, region, age, phone, and setup.
Rank #3
- Samsung ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm tools: Samsung says its ECG app is for informational use in adults 22 and older. The tools have phone requirements, may not alert on every episode, and are not a replacement for traditional diagnosis or treatment.
- Samsung sleep-apnea monitoring: Samsung describes this as an over-the-counter, software-only feature for specified adults and compatible devices. It is not intended for people already diagnosed with sleep apnea and must not replace diagnosis or treatment by a qualified clinician.
- Apple health features: Apple says availability can depend on region, language, age, and companion-device requirements. ECG and sleep-apnea notifications apply only to specified models and age groups, with exclusions; they are not universal features across every Apple Watch or country.

How should fit, price, and availability affect your choice?
Apple lists Series 12 in 42 mm and 46 mm sizes. Samsung’s comparison page lists varying case and material options across its models. If fit matters, compare the specific case dimensions and try the watch on if possible; there is no established comparative wear test for these models.
Rank #4
Apple lists the Series 12 at a U.S. starting price of $399 in 2026. Samsung’s reviewed comparison page does not provide a directly comparable current Watch9 price, so check current local listings for both brands before deciding. Prices and stock can change, and a starting price is not necessarily the price of the size or material you want.

The manufacturer materials establish model descriptions, listed features, compatibility conditions, and Apple’s stated U.S. starting price. They do not establish an independent head-to-head winner for battery life, sensor accuracy, workout performance, or owner satisfaction. Do not treat a manufacturer’s feature list or product positioning as proof that one watch performs better in real-world use.
