Choose Apple Watch if you want the closest integration with a compatible iPhone and its apps, notifications, and services. Choose Garmin if longer time between charges, structured training, or a watch built around running and outdoor use matters more. Neither brand is the best choice for everyone; compare specific models, because an Apple SE and Ultra serve different needs, just as a Garmin Venu, Forerunner, fēnix, and Instinct do.

Start with your phone and the way you use a watch

Apple Watch is designed to pair with a compatible iPhone, making it the more natural fit if you want a watch that works closely with Apple services and everyday apps. Garmin models may support both iOS and Android, but compatibility and phone-connected features vary by model. A current hands-on guide, for example, lists the Garmin Venu X1 as compatible with both platforms; check the exact watch’s supported functions before buying. Apple’s Series 12 announcement says watchOS 27 requires iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), with iOS 27 or later. Apple also cautions that not all features are available on every device or in every region.

For routine smartwatch use—notifications, apps, calls, payments, and iPhone integration—Apple Watch is the stronger starting point. Garmin offers smart features too, but its clearest differentiators in the cited comparison are training, endurance, and sport-focused tools. Before choosing, list the phone interactions and services you actually use, then verify that the exact model supports them.

Compare the right product families

“Garmin” is not one kind of watch. Its families range from general wellness to specialist running and rugged outdoor use; a premium model’s features should not be assumed to exist across the whole range. Apple likewise spans entry-level, mainstream, and adventure-oriented models.

Family or tier Best starting point for What to verify
Apple Watch SE Buyers looking at Apple’s entry tier. Exact generation, supported health and smartwatch features, and current price.
Apple Watch Series Buyers seeking Apple’s mainstream mix of health sensing and everyday smartwatch functions. Feature availability for the specific model, operating system, and region.
Apple Watch Ultra Buyers prioritizing sport and adventure within Apple’s lineup. Whether its navigation, battery, durability, and size suit the activity.
Garmin Venu and vívoactive General wellness and everyday use within Garmin’s range. Specific smart functions, sport profiles, and health features on the model.
Garmin Forerunner Runners comparing sport-oriented watches. Training metrics, navigation, sport needs, and any required accessories.
Garmin fēnix and Instinct Buyers looking at rugged outdoor watches. Navigation, battery, durability, size, and model-specific features.

Garmin’s catalog positions these families for different activities; the Garmin U.S. watch catalog is a starting point, not a substitute for the specifications of a particular model. For a runner, compare a specific Forerunner with the Apple Watch under consideration. For a general-purpose Garmin, Venu is a more relevant comparison family. For rugged outdoor use, compare the exact fēnix or Instinct model with Apple Ultra.

Battery claims favor Garmin’s longer intervals, but are not a head-to-head test

Apple says Series 12 offers up to 24 hours of everyday battery life and up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout. These are Apple’s manufacturer figures under its stated test routines, not independently measured results. Apple’s routine includes time checks, notifications, app use, a workout with Bluetooth music, and sleep tracking; the company says actual results vary. For Garmin’s Venu X1, TechRadar lists eight days of battery life, while its narrative says up to nine days with always-on display off. Those figures come from a reviewer’s listing and narrative, not a controlled comparison with Apple Watch. They illustrate why Garmin can appeal to someone who wants longer intervals between charges, but they are not directly comparable with Apple’s Series 12 figures. Display settings, GPS use, workouts, and everyday habits affect results.

Training, outdoor tools, and health features depend on the model

Garmin’s strength is the range of watches organized around sport and outdoor activity. The Venu X1 example in TechRadar’s hands-on guide to smartwatches for iPhone users includes Garmin Coach, Training Readiness, maps, Body Battery, and stress monitoring. Those capabilities are an example of one model, not a promise about every Garmin. Garmin positions Forerunner for runners and fēnix and Instinct for outdoor use.

Apple’s Series line combines health sensing with everyday smartwatch functions, while Apple positions Ultra for adventure. Apple says feature availability varies by model and region. Health notifications should not be treated as diagnoses: Apple’s sleep-apnea notification, for example, is described as detecting signs in adults without a diagnosis. A watch does not replace clinical advice. Check availability and feature details for your model and country before relying on a specific health function.
