The Apple Watch Series 5’s standout upgrade is its always-on display: with your wrist lowered, the screen dims instead of going blank, so you can glance at the time and key information without raising your arm. That made it a compelling refinement in 2019, but it did not by itself establish the Series 5 as the world’s best smartwatch—and for Series 4 owners, the upgrade case was modest.

What changed with Apple Watch Series 5?

Apple introduced Series 5 on September 10, 2019, with retail availability beginning September 20. Its defining change was an always-on Retina display. The screen stays visible at lower brightness when your wrist is down, then returns to full brightness when you raise your wrist or tap it. The practical benefit is simple: checking the time or a complication no longer requires the usual wrist raise.

Apple also added a built-in compass, international emergency calling on cellular models, and new case-material choices. The watch shipped with watchOS 6 features. These additions broadened the package, but launch-era review coverage treated the always-on screen as the main attraction and described the overall change from Series 4 as incremental.

Is the always-on display worth upgrading for?

That depends on how often you want to see the watch face without moving your wrist. If you found the wrist-raise interaction inconvenient, always-on is a meaningful everyday improvement. If your Series 4 already meets your needs, the display is the clearest reason to upgrade, while the rest of the changes may not feel substantial enough on their own.

TechSpot’s September 2019 review roundup reported generally positive reactions to always-on, while emphasizing that there was not much else new. It also relayed mixed battery experiences: one reviewer’s initial cellular sample drained early, while a replacement performed better. Those are launch-era reviewer reports, not a controlled test or evidence that every Series 5 has a battery problem.

Apple Watch Series 5 specifications

Apple’s archived specifications describe the product as it launched. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

Battery life: what the 18-hour rating means

Apple rated Series 5 for up to 18 hours of battery life in 2019 and noted that actual life varies by use. Treat that as a manufacturer rating, not a guarantee for every day, cellular configuration, or feature mix. It also does not describe the battery condition of a used watch: an older unit’s real-world endurance depends in part on its battery’s present health.

Does “the world’s best watch” hold up?

“The world’s best watch” is a subjective verdict, not a specification. TechSpot’s 2019 roundup said some reviewers used the phrase “Now the world’s best watch. Period.” and linked it to The Verge review coverage. That is secondary reporting of an opinion from the product’s launch period; it is not a measured ranking, a current consensus, or evidence that Series 5 is the best smartwatch in 2026.

A broader buying decision depends on what matters to you: compatibility with your phone and ecosystem, whether you want an always-on screen, battery endurance, health and fitness features, and the price and condition of the specific watch. The available launch-era specifications and reviews cannot establish how Series 5 ranks against today’s watches.

Should you buy an Apple Watch Series 5 now?

Series 5 is a 2019 model, so a present-day purchase is likely to involve a used or refurbished listing rather than a new Apple retail product. Before buying, check the seller’s condition and return terms, ask what is actually known about battery health, and compare the price with alternatives available to you. Do not assume a listing’s battery-life claims follow from Apple’s original rating.

At launch in the United States, Apple listed starting prices of $399 for GPS and $499 for GPS + Cellular, with retail availability from September 20, 2019. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices or evidence of present stock. Availability of models, materials, and cellular service also varies by configuration and geography.

Verdict

The Apple Watch Series 5 was a strong 2019 update for people who wanted to glance at a watch face without raising their wrist. Its always-on display gave the product a clear advantage over the prior interaction, while the rest of the changes were comparatively limited. For a Series 4 owner, upgrade only if always-on matters enough to justify replacing a watch that otherwise does the job. For a buyer considering one now, the individual unit’s condition and price matter more than its launch-era superlatives.
