If your Apple TV is not working, start by identifying whether the problem is with the TV box, the network, an app or account, the remote, AirPlay, or setup. Restart the affected device first; reserve a reset for problems that persist, because resetting Apple TV erases its accounts and configuration. For streaming trouble, remember that a working Wi-Fi connection does not guarantee that a particular service, account, or video stream is working.
This guide covers Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD hardware as well as the Apple TV app on supported third-party devices. The steps vary by problem, so begin with the symptom that best matches yours.
What should I check first when Apple TV is not working?
First work out which part has failed: the Apple TV device or its display connection, the network, a particular app or account, the remote, AirPlay, or setup. Then try reversible fixes before anything that erases settings.

- Check whether the issue is limited to one app or one device. If the Apple TV app fails on a smart TV, phone, tablet, or computer, troubleshoot that device and the app. If the Apple TV box itself is unresponsive, focus on its power, network, software, and remote.
- Restart the affected device or service path. Restart Apple TV for a hardware problem; for an app issue, restart the device running the app as well.
- Check updates and service status. Install available Apple TV or app updates, and check Apple System Status or the relevant content provider if a service will not load.
- Isolate the network. Test another device on the same connection. If possible, try Ethernet on a model with an Ethernet port, or reconnect Apple TV to Wi-Fi.
- Reset only after lower-risk checks fail. A reset removes accounts and configuration. If Apple TV remains unresponsive after the documented recovery steps, contact Apple Support or seek certified repair.
This sequence helps avoid treating every playback problem as a Wi-Fi failure. A device can be online while a service is down, an account needs attention, a connection is too slow for the video, or a streaming limit has been reached.

Why won’t my Apple TV connect to Wi-Fi?
If Apple TV will not join Wi-Fi, check whether an Ethernet cable is connected, then forget and rejoin the wireless network and restart the network equipment if needed. Ethernet is also a useful diagnostic: if a wired connection works on a model that supports it, the issue is more likely on the Wi-Fi path than with the streaming service.
- Check for a wired connection. When Ethernet is plugged into Apple TV, Wi-Fi options may not appear in Settings. Disconnect the cable if you specifically need to troubleshoot wireless networking.
- Forget and rejoin the network. On Apple TV, open Settings > Network, select the current network, forget it, and join it again using the network credentials.
- Check the router and modem. Confirm both are powered and working. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi to see whether it can access the internet.
- Improve placement. Reduce obstructions between Apple TV and the router. Avoid placing Apple TV directly on the router or within one foot of it.
- Restart the equipment. Restart Apple TV, router, and modem, then try joining Wi-Fi again.
- Try Ethernet if available. Connect Apple TV directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then check for software updates before returning to Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi is convenient, but a wired connection can help distinguish a wireless coverage or interference problem from a wider internet or service issue. Ethernet is not a guaranteed cure: if other devices also cannot get online, investigate the router, modem, or internet service instead. Ethernet availability depends on the Apple TV model.
Why won’t Apple TV play movies or shows?
When a movie or show will not start, check the app or Apple device for updates, confirm the service is available, and resolve any Apple Account sign-in prompt. Then test the connection and check whether another device is streaming at the same time.
Use these checks in order:
- Update the app or device. Install available updates for the Apple TV app or the Apple device running it.
- Check service availability. Look at Apple System Status for Apple services, or check the relevant provider if the content comes from another service. A service outage can prevent playback even when the device is online.
- Check sign-in. If prompted, resolve Apple Account sign-in issues before retrying the content.
- Compare connections. If you are using poor cellular service, switch to Wi-Fi. Test another device on the same connection; if it also struggles, the problem may be the connection rather than Apple TV.
- Check concurrent streams. Some services limit how many streams can run at once. Stop playback on another device if the service indicates that its simultaneous-stream limit has been reached.
Apple states that streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster. That is Apple’s stated requirement for HD streaming, not a guarantee that every stream will play smoothly at that speed: other network use, connection quality, or the provider’s service can still affect playback.
Why is Apple TV buffering or showing poor video quality?
Buffering and poor picture quality can reflect limited or inconsistent bandwidth, competing network use, or an issue with the app or device. Pause heavy internet use elsewhere on the network as a quick way to see whether contention is contributing.
- Temporarily pause large downloads, video calls, or other heavy internet use by people on the network, then retry playback.
- Restart the smart TV, streaming device, Apple device, or computer that is running the Apple TV app.
- Test another device on the same connection. If it also has trouble, focus on the network; if only one app or device fails, focus on that app or device.
- If the service offers downloads and the title is eligible, download it instead of streaming. Downloading can be a useful alternative when the connection is unreliable.
Do not assume that buffering means Apple TV has lost Wi-Fi. Check whether the device is still connected and whether other services work. If the network is connected but one title or provider still fails, check that provider’s status, account, and playback limits.

Why is my Apple TV remote not responding?
Start by pairing the Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote with Apple TV, then check its charge and signal. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says to try pairing first when a remote is not working as expected.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Pair the remote
Point the remote at Apple TV from about three inches away. Hold Back (or Menu) and Volume Up together for five seconds. If pairing fails, unplug Apple TV, plug it back in, and try pairing again.
Restart the remote
Hold TV/Control Center and Volume Down together for about five seconds. Wait 5–10 seconds, then press a button on the remote and check whether Apple TV responds.
Check the signal and charge
On Apple TV with tvOS 18 or later, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote to check Bluetooth RSSI, a measure of signal strength. If the signal is weak, move within about 20 feet of Apple TV and remove obstructions between the remote and device. Charge the remote for 30 minutes before testing it again.
If the remote still does not work, use an iPhone as a temporary control surface, if available, while you continue troubleshooting or arrange a replacement. For a lost compatible remote, the iPhone can also help locate it.

How do I use an iPhone as an Apple TV remote?
You can use the Apple TV Remote control in iPhone Control Center as an alternative when the physical remote is missing or not responding. The iPhone and Apple TV need to be available for the control to connect; this is a control alternative, not a repair for a failed network or unresponsive Apple TV.

Open Control Center on the iPhone and tap Apple TV Remote. If prompted, choose the Apple TV from the device list and follow the on-screen connection prompts. If you do not see the control, check that the iPhone is updated and that the Apple TV is powered on and reachable on the network.
For locating a compatible lost remote, Apple’s Find feature has additional requirements: the iPhone must run iOS 17 or later, and Apple TV must run tvOS 17 or later. Open Control Center, tap Apple TV Remote, choose the device list, tap Find, and follow the proximity prompts. The Find feature applies to a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later); it is not a general tracking method for every remote model.
How do I fix AirPlay or screen mirroring not working on Apple TV?
For AirPlay or screen mirroring, make sure both devices are powered on, nearby, updated, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Restart both devices and check for restrictions if the connection is still blocked.
- Confirm the sending device and Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Move the devices closer together, then restart them and try AirPlay again.
- If the destination Apple TV is configured in the Home app, check Home settings for AirPlay restrictions.
- If Apple TV asks for a password, check content restrictions or AirPlay password settings.
AirPlay depends on the sending device, destination, network, and any configured restrictions. If ordinary streaming works but mirroring does not, check those AirPlay-specific settings before resetting Apple TV.
What should I do if Apple TV setup is stuck?
If setup stops responding, unplug Apple TV, reconnect power, and retry setup. If a particular setup screen remains blocked, temporarily use another Wi-Fi network, such as a phone hotspot, and switch Apple TV back to the home network after setup.
If you are using iPhone-based setup, prepare the iPhone first:

If the setup flow cannot pass a screen on the home network, a temporary alternate network can help determine whether that network is blocking or interrupting setup. Once setup completes, reconnect Apple TV to your usual Wi-Fi. If the device remains unresponsive after a power cycle and retry, contact Apple Support rather than attempting undocumented recovery steps.

Keep Apple TV connected to power and the network while an update is in progress. The right response depends on what the screen says: Apple advises waiting if it shows “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update,” but gives a different restart instruction for a progress bar stuck beneath an Apple logo without text.
- “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update” for less than an hour: Allow the update more time and keep the device connected.
- Either update message has remained for more than an hour: Contact Apple Support before restarting or unplugging Apple TV.
- A progress bar beneath an Apple logo, without text, has not moved for more than an hour: Apple advises unplugging and reconnecting power to restart Apple TV. If it still will not update, contact Apple Support.
These screen states call for different actions. Check the exact message before interrupting an update; do not apply the progress-bar restart advice to a device displaying “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I restart or reset Apple TV?
Restart first. A restart is the lower-risk recovery step; a reset erases accounts and configuration, so use it only after simpler checks fail and you are prepared to set the device up again.
If Apple TV 4K still does not respond and you can navigate its settings, open Settings > System > Reset > Reset. Allow the process time to finish. The Reset and Update option also restores factory settings and installs the latest tvOS version.
Resetting will not fix every cause of trouble. For example, it cannot resolve a provider outage, a weak home Wi-Fi signal, or a simultaneous-stream limit imposed by a service. If Apple TV remains unresponsive or the reset does not resolve the issue, contact Apple TV Support. Do not reset simply because one app cannot play content when other apps and the device work normally.

What if Apple TV has a black screen or no power?
A black screen or no-power problem needs hardware and display troubleshooting, but the available Apple guidance identifies it as a separate support category without supplying detailed recovery steps here. Avoid guessing at hardware repairs or applying reset instructions when you cannot confirm that Apple TV is powered on and responding.
Use Apple’s current support guidance for black-screen and power problems, then contact Apple Support or a certified repair provider if the documented steps do not resolve the issue. This is especially important when the device remains unresponsive, because unsupported repair attempts can create additional problems.
When should I contact Apple Support?
Escalate when the documented steps for the specific symptom fail, when Apple’s update guidance says to contact Support, or when the device remains unresponsive. For hardware problems, use Apple Support or certified repair rather than attempting undocumented internal repairs.
Before contacting support, note the Apple TV model if known, the exact message or screen state, what steps you have already tried, and whether the issue affects one app or the whole device. This helps distinguish a device problem from a network, account, or provider issue. For the Apple TV app on a third-party device, also identify the device and app version if available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Apple TV without an Apple Account?
Some setup and playback functions require account sign-in, and an account sign-in issue can prevent content from starting. If a prompt appears during setup or playback, resolve it rather than treating the prompt as a network fault.
Does Apple TV need a certain internet speed for 4K?
The cited Apple troubleshooting guidance specifies 8 Mbit/s or faster for HD streaming; it does not establish a 4K speed requirement. Check the relevant service’s current requirements for its 4K content.
Will resetting Apple TV cancel my subscriptions?
A reset removes accounts and configuration from the device, so you may need to sign in again. The available guidance does not say that resetting the device itself cancels subscriptions; check each provider’s account settings if you intend to cancel a service.

No. Apple’s Find feature applies to a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later), with iOS 17 or later on iPhone and tvOS 17 or later on Apple TV. An iPhone can still serve as a control surface independently of using Find to locate a compatible remote.
