When should you replace an Apple Pencil tip?

How do you change an Apple Pencil tip?
The following threaded replacement steps are from iFixit’s guide for Apple Pencil (2nd generation); they should not be assumed to describe every Pencil generation or every third-party tip.
- Hold the existing tip and turn it counterclockwise to unscrew it.
- Place the replacement tip on the exposed threaded post and turn it clockwise until tight. Stop when it no longer turns easily.

How do you check whether a replacement tip is compatible?
First identify your exact Apple Pencil model, then compare it with the replacement listing’s stated compatibility. Apple’s compatibility page separates Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation), with different supported iPad models for each. It also lists software minimums for Pencil Pro and USB-C. Consult Apple’s current Apple Pencil compatibility list, which can change as the device lineup changes.
A Pencil working with your iPad does not by itself establish that any particular replacement tip will fit. Check the seller’s exact model details, who is selling the tip, what the pack includes, and the return terms. What if the Pencil still does not work after replacing the tip?
A new tip will not necessarily resolve every Pencil problem. Confirm that you have identified the Pencil and iPad models correctly and fitted a compatible tip; keep the tip clean. If the Pencil remains unresponsive, use Apple’s connection and pairing guide, which covers identifying a Pencil, supported iPads, and connecting and pairing.
