Apple patched a serious CoreGraphics flaw in iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1, released September 28, 2026. If your iPhone offers an update, install it. Apple says the flaw may have been used in a highly targeted attack, but neither Apple nor the government advisory gives a count of affected users—so the claim that billions of iPhone owners are affected is not established.
What the iPhone security warning means
The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-86950, is in CoreGraphics, which processes graphics and files. Apple says processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to arbitrary code execution. The company fixed an out-of-bounds write by improving bounds checking.
Apple says it is aware of a report that the issue “may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals” on iOS versions before iOS 27. That wording describes possible exploitation against particular people; it does not say that all iPhone users were attacked or compromised. Apple’s advisory does not identify the attackers, victims, or delivery method.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security reported on September 29, 2026, that CISA had added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities database. That confirms its listing as a known exploited vulnerability, not the likelihood that any given iPhone owner will be targeted. Neither the Apple advisories nor the government notice reports how many users are affected or exposed.

Which iOS update should you install?
Apple’s release list, checked October 4, 2026, includes both iOS 27.0.1 and iOS 26.7.1, released September 28. The government advisory describes affected versions as earlier than 27.0.1 or 26.7.1. Apple lists both releases for iPhone 11 and later. Check the version and update offered on your device rather than assuming you need to move to a new major iOS version.

Apple’s dedicated iOS 26.7.1 advisory identifies CVE-2026-86950 and the targeted-exploitation caveat. Do not infer from the separate iOS 27 release notes that this CVE is described there: Apple’s security releases listing shows no published CVE entries for iOS 27.0.1.

How to check and install the update
- Back up your iPhone using iCloud or a computer.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and plug it into power.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple says to use a computer if the update does not appear wirelessly. Its full instructions are in Update your iPhone or iPad. To enable automatic installation, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple says an enabled automatic install happens overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

If no update appears
- Check the installed iOS version at Settings > General > About, then return to Settings > General > Software Update to see what Apple offers for that device.
- If the update is not available wirelessly, follow Apple’s instructions to update using a computer.
- Do not treat a VPN, antivirus app, or accessory as a substitute for the operating-system patch. The fix for this vulnerability is Apple’s software update.
