Apple says it uses rotating identifiers for many Maps requests and processes many personalized features on-device. It also receives information such as searches and route details, and optional settings can send data for service improvement. Google Maps and Waze offer their own controls, so the practical difference depends on which settings you enable and what kind of data you want to limit.
How Apple Maps compares with Google Maps and Waze
| Privacy area | Apple Maps | Google Maps | Waze |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account linkage | Apple says usage metrics use rotating identifiers not tied to an Apple Account; some submissions, such as ratings and photos, are account-linked. Apple Maps & Privacy and Apple Privacy Features | Google Account controls can save Search, Maps, and other activity. Timeline is a separate optional control. Google: How Google uses location information | Waze provides account and history controls; account deletion removes saved places and navigation history, while some contributed data remains de-linked. Waze Privacy controls |
| Location history | Apple says Significant Locations & Routes sync with end-to-end encryption; other Maps personalization and service-improvement settings are distinct. Location Services & Privacy and Improve Maps & Privacy | Timeline is off by default; when enabled, it can regularly save precise location on eligible signed-in mobile devices. Google location information | Users can delete navigation history and recent locations through Waze controls. Waze Privacy controls |
| Search and route data | Apple says it receives search interactions and route details; it describes reducing the precision of search-origin locations within 24 hours. Apple Maps & Privacy and Apple Privacy Features | Location supports Maps functions, and what is saved depends on product and account settings. Google location information | Waze uses navigation information to provide its service and offers history and visibility controls. Waze Privacy controls |
| Advertising | Apple describes contextual Maps ads and says Maps location is not shared with advertisers; approximate location may be used by Apple Ads with permission. Apple Maps & Privacy | Google says location can support location-based advertising; some activity uses depend on account settings. Google location information | Ad personalization can be disabled, but Waze says ads may still appear. Waze Privacy controls |
These are providers’ descriptions of their products and controls, not independent audits of how the apps behave in every situation. Options can vary by app version, platform, account setup, and region.
What Apple Maps collects—and what its privacy features do
Apple says Maps may send the time of a request, device model and software version, input language, device location if permission is granted, the map area on screen, and interactions such as search terms, places viewed, and features used. A navigation request may include the starting or current location, destination, transport mode, CarPlay connection status, and a random identifier for that navigation session. So an identifier that is not tied to an Apple Account does not mean no location information reaches Apple.
Rotating identifiers and on-device personalization
For usage metrics, Apple says identifiers rotate multiple times per hour and are not tied to an Apple Account. Apple also says many personalized Maps features—including Visited Places, Parked Car, Time to Leave, Pinned Locations, and destination suggestions—are created using data generated on the device. Its Maps privacy notice says route geometry for Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations is sent to Apple, with steps taken within 24 hours so Apple does not learn that a route is preferred or predicted.

Search-location fuzzing and Significant Locations
Apple describes converting the precise location associated with a search into a less exact location within 24 hours, and says it does not retain a history of what users searched for or where they have been. Separately, Apple says Significant Locations & Routes sync between signed-in devices using end-to-end encryption, so Apple cannot read that synced information. Those protections do not mean the Maps service never receives location-related data. See Apple’s privacy feature description and Location Services notice.
Settings that can share data for service improvement
Apple’s optional Improve Maps feature is separate from end-to-end encrypted Significant Locations syncing. When enabled, Apple says it collects GPS coordinates from Significant Locations, correlates them with the street address associated with the Apple Account, and retains the resulting coordinates only anonymously. To review it, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Improve Maps. Apple’s description is in its Improve Maps & Privacy notice.

Apple also says camera and motion-sensor data used for Enhanced Navigation Accuracy, Refine Location, or AR Walking is not stored and does not leave the device. If Improve AR Location Accuracy is enabled, camera data about building size, shape, and other physical features may be sent to Apple. Apple describes Maps ads as selected using context such as current search terms and map view, and, with permission, approximate device location; it says location is not shared with advertisers and ad interactions use a rotating random identifier. These are Apple’s statements about its systems, not an independent verification.
Google Maps: Timeline is only one location control
Google says Timeline is off by default. If enabled, it regularly saves precise device locations on eligible signed-in mobile devices, including when Google apps are not open. Google lets users review, edit, delete, or set Timeline to auto-delete after 3, 18, or 36 months. Those durations apply to Timeline’s auto-delete option, not necessarily every location-related record across Google services.

Turning Timeline off does not turn off every other location-related control. Google specifically distinguishes Timeline from Search Services History and Web & App Activity, and says location information may be used by other products. Review each of those settings, the Maps app’s location permission, and the device’s location settings separately. Details are in Google’s location information documentation.
Waze: privacy controls for visibility, history, and ads
Waze offers controls for ad personalization, Go invisible, navigation history, recent locations, and account details. Go invisible hides your visible identity or presence from other Waze users; it is not a setting that stops Waze from collecting information for its own service. Turning off ad personalization can make ads less tailored, but does not remove ads.

Waze says users can delete individual drives or all navigation history and remove recent locations. Deleting an account removes saved places and navigation history. Waze says some contributed information, including map edits and statistical drive data, is not removed, though it is no longer linked to the account. See Waze’s privacy control instructions.

- Choose Apple Maps if you value Apple’s described use of rotating identifiers, on-device personalization, search-location fuzzing, and end-to-end encrypted syncing of Significant Locations. Check Improve Maps and other optional features rather than assuming every setting is private by default.
- Google Maps may fit if you rely on its features and are comfortable managing Google’s account-level activity controls. Timeline is optional, but it is not the only setting relevant to location information.
- Waze may fit if you want controls over public visibility, navigation history, recent locations, or ad personalization. Invisible mode addresses what other users can see, not Waze’s collection for providing the service.
There is no comparable, source-backed privacy score establishing one of these apps as the overall winner. A useful comparison is the data you want to limit: account-linked history, service requests, advertising use, or visibility to other users.

iPhone checklist for reviewing mapping-app privacy
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and review each navigation app’s access. Apple says an app must ask before using Location Services, and you can revoke access. See About privacy and Location Services in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.
- Choose the location access level the app needs—such as While Using or Always—and consider whether approximate location is sufficient. Available choices depend on the app and operating-system version.
- In Apple Maps settings and Location Services, review Visited Places, Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations, and related features.
- To limit Apple’s optional service-improvement sharing, review Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Improve Maps.
- In your Google Account, review Timeline, Search Services History, and Web & App Activity individually, along with Maps’ device permission.
- In Waze, review ad personalization, Go invisible, navigation history, recent locations, and account deletion controls.
Apple notes that third-party app practices are governed by each provider’s terms and privacy policy; changing iPhone permissions does not replace reviewing the provider’s account and in-app controls. See Apple’s Location Services guidance.
