Apple announced the iPhone 17e and a refreshed iPad Air with M4 on March 2, 2026. The iPhone 17e is a smartphone starting at US$599 with 256GB of storage; the iPad Air is a tablet available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, starting at US$599 for Wi-Fi models. Both went on sale March 11 after preorders opened March 4. They serve different roles, so the useful comparison is what each device adds and which form factor fits your needs.
What Apple announced
The iPhone 17e joins the iPhone 17 family as its lower-priced member. The M4 iPad Air is a tablet refresh available in two screen sizes. Apple announced both on March 2, 2026; preorders began March 4, and availability began March 11 in more than 70 countries and regions. Availability and prices outside the United States vary.

These are U.S. launch prices, not current retail quotes. The products are not direct substitutes: choose the iPhone for a pocketable phone with cellular connectivity, and the iPad for a larger workspace, media screen, or tablet-based creative setup.
What is new in iPhone 17e?
A19 chip and C1X modem
Apple says the iPhone 17e uses its A19 chip and C1X cellular modem. Apple describes C1X as up to twice as fast as the C1 modem in iPhone 16e; that is Apple’s comparison, not an independently established result. The phone has a 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine, according to Apple’s specifications.

48MP Fusion camera
The 48MP Fusion camera records 4K Dolby Vision video and offers what Apple calls optical-quality 2x telephoto framing. This is a framing option from the Fusion camera, not a separate physical telephoto lens. Apple’s specifications also list optical image stabilization.
6.1-inch display and satellite features
The phone has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with Ceramic Shield 2. Apple lists satellite messaging, emergency, roadside assistance, and Find My features for use outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Satellite functionality and service availability can depend on region and other conditions; check Apple’s current support information for the feature you need.

Storage, finishes, and charging accessories
Apple announced 256GB and 512GB configurations in black, white, and soft pink. MagSafe and Qi2 support are included, and Apple announced MagSafe Silicone and Clear cases. At launch in the U.S., each case was listed at US$49; that is not a current price.
What is new in the M4 iPad Air?
M4 performance and memory
The M4 iPad Air has an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, 12GB of unified memory, and 120GB/s memory bandwidth, according to Apple. Apple says it adds 50% more unified memory than the previous generation.

Apple claims the M4 model is up to 30% faster than iPad Air with M3 and up to 2.3 times faster than iPad Air with M1. Apple says it conducted the comparison testing in January and February 2026. Its footnote identifies the M3 comparison unit as a 13-inch model with an 8-core CPU and 8GB of unified memory. These are manufacturer figures, not independently reproduced benchmarks, and they do not establish a fixed speed increase for every app or workflow.
Two sizes, storage options, and connectivity
The tablet comes in 11-inch and 13-inch versions, with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage. Finishes are blue, purple, starlight, and space gray. Wi-Fi models start at US$599 for 11-inch and US$799 for 13-inch; Wi-Fi + Cellular models start at US$749 and US$949, respectively. Cellular versions use Apple’s C1X modem.

Apple says the N1 wireless chip enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Wi-Fi 7 availability depends on country or region support. Apple also claims C1X provides up to 50% faster cellular data performance than the prior iPad Air with M3 and uses up to 30% less modem energy for active cellular users. These are Apple’s comparisons, not independent test results.
Apple Pencil and keyboard compatibility
The M4 iPad Air supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), as well as Magic Keyboard. The 11-inch and 13-inch tablets use different keyboard sizes, so the accessory must match the tablet. At announcement, U.S. prices were US$129 for Pencil Pro, US$79 for Pencil (USB-C), US$269 for the 11-inch keyboard, and US$319 for the 13-inch keyboard. Apple sells these accessories separately; check current pricing before buying.

Which device should you choose?
- Choose iPhone 17e if you need a smartphone and value its 256GB starting storage, A19 chip, MagSafe support, and 48MP Fusion camera.
- Choose the 11-inch iPad Air if a more portable tablet is your priority and you want access to M4, Apple Pencil, or keyboard workflows.
- Choose the 13-inch iPad Air if you prefer a larger display for multitasking, drawing, documents, or video.
- Decide between Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models based on whether you need tablet connectivity away from Wi-Fi; the cellular configurations cost more at launch.
Because the iPhone and iPad fill different jobs, the right choice depends less on which chip is newer and more on whether you need a phone or a larger-screen tablet.
