The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 in the US, while Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 from $1,899.99 before trade-in—a $600.99 higher listed starting price for the Fold8. The bigger decision is the design: the iPhone is a conventional large-screen phone; the Fold8 opens into a 7.6-inch display for a more tablet-like workspace. Choose based on whether you value a familiar single-screen phone or the foldable’s larger canvas, not a specification tally alone.
Price and availability in the United States
Apple announced a $1,299 US starting price for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and said availability would begin September 18, 2026. Apple lists 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options. Samsung’s US product page lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 from $1,899.99 before trade-in. That makes the Fold8’s listed starting price $600.99 higher, calculated from those two US base prices.
The difference is a list-price comparison, not a promise about what either phone will cost at checkout. Retailer and carrier promotions, trade-in offers, taxes, and storage configuration can change the amount. Tom’s Guide’s September 30, 2026 review listed the Fold8 at $1,899.99 for 256GB/12GB RAM, $2,099.99 for 512GB/12GB, and $2,499.99 for 1TB/16GB; Samsung’s current US product page is the better reference for its present base price.
Form factor and display: slab phone or foldable workspace?
| Specification | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy Z Fold8 |
|---|---|---|
| Display configuration | One 6.9-inch OLED display | 5.5-inch cover screen and 7.6-inch inner screen |
| Resolution and refresh rate | 2,868 × 1,320 pixels, 460 ppi; adaptive refresh up to 120Hz | Not stated in the cited Samsung specifications |
| Weight | 249g | 201g |
These screen sizes describe different ways of using the devices. The iPhone gives you a single large display at all times. The Fold8’s outer screen is for using the phone while folded; open it to get the larger 7.6-inch canvas, which may suit reading, video, or side-by-side tasks. Its inner display is not simply a larger version of the iPhone screen: it is part of a book-style folding device.

Camera hardware: the iPhone has a dedicated telephoto lens
| Camera detail | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy Z Fold8 |
|---|---|---|
| Rear cameras | 48MP main with variable aperture, 48MP ultra-wide, and 48MP telephoto | 50MP wide and 50MP ultra-wide |
| Zoom specifications | 4× optical zoom; up to 8× optical-quality telephoto framing and 40× digital zoom | 2× optical-quality zoom and up to 30× digital zoom |
| Dedicated telephoto lens | Yes | No, according to Tom’s Guide |
The clearest spec-sheet difference is the iPhone’s dedicated telephoto camera and its stated 4× optical zoom. The Fold8’s listed rear setup does not include a separate telephoto lens. These specifications alone do not establish which phone takes better pictures: megapixels, lens count, and zoom labels are not a substitute for a controlled side-by-side camera test, and none is established here.
Performance, software, and ecosystem
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy Z Fold8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Apple A20 Pro | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy |
| Platform and AI features | iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI | Galaxy AI |
The listed platforms point to different ecosystems, not a proven performance winner. If you already rely on Apple devices, services, apps, or accessories, that continuity may favor the iPhone. If your devices and routines are built around Samsung or Android, the Fold8 may fit more naturally. These are buyer-fit considerations; the cited specifications do not establish a comparative benchmark result.

Battery: published figures use different methods
Samsung lists a 4,800mAh battery and up to 26 hours of video playback for the Galaxy Z Fold8. Tom’s Guide recorded 12 hours and 19 minutes in its own 5G web-surfing battery test. That test figure is a third-party result under a specific web-browsing method; it is not the same as Samsung’s video-playback claim.
Apple says its battery testing was conducted in August 2026 on preproduction units under a representative usage profile. That methodology differs from Tom’s Guide’s 5G web-surfing test, so the figures should not be read as a direct head-to-head comparison. Apple also describes the iPhone 18 Pro Max as delivering its “largest battery-life increase ever on iPhone”; that is Apple’s product claim, not an independent comparative result.

Build, water resistance, and S Pen support
- iPhone: Apple specifies IP68 resistance under IEC 60529, with testing for up to 6 metres for 30 minutes under specified conditions. This rating describes a defined test, not a guarantee against damage in every situation.
- Galaxy Z Fold8: Samsung describes Armor Aluminum, Corning Gorilla Glass, titanium layers beneath the display, and an Armor FlexHinge. These are manufacturer descriptions of its materials and construction, not evidence that it is more durable than the iPhone.
- S Pen: Samsung explicitly says the Galaxy Z Fold8 does not support S Pen.
The available specifications do not establish comparative long-term foldable-screen failure rates, repair costs, or overall ruggedness, so those are not sound grounds for a definitive durability ranking.

Include trade-in terms, warranty, tax, and any promotion when comparing real checkout totals. For accessories, confirm the exact model designation: a Galaxy Z Fold case should not be assumed to fit across generations. Samsung references official magnetic cases, and Apple announced model-specific MagSafe cases alongside the iPhone; check the seller’s compatibility details for the precise phone before ordering.
