Apple announced Apple Intelligence on June 10, 2024, describing it as a personal intelligence system that combines generative AI with context from a user’s device. It was designed for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with processing split between on-device models and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. The announcement was not the same as a full feature launch: Apple’s first public features arrived on October 28, 2024, and current device and language requirements have since changed.
What Apple announced on June 10, 2024
Apple introduced Apple Intelligence as a system that could understand and create language and images, take actions across apps, and use personal context to help with tasks. The announcement placed it in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Apple CEO Tim Cook described the idea as combining generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver helpful intelligence.
The announced capabilities included Writing Tools to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text; image creation; photo search and editing; and a more capable Siri intended to draw on personal information and take actions across apps. Apple also announced an optional ChatGPT integration. These were announcement-era plans, not a promise that every capability would be available immediately or on every device.
What shipped first—and what applies now
The first public release
The first public feature set arrived October 28, 2024, in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Apple listed Writing Tools, notification and message summaries, Siri changes, Clean Up in Photos, and other features in that release. See Apple’s October 28, 2024 release notice.

Current requirements as of September 14, 2026
Apple Support says the next generation of Apple Intelligence is automatically available on eligible devices updated to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27, subject to language and region support. The current eligibility list includes:
- iPhone: iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.
- iPad: iPad mini with A17 Pro, and iPads with M1 or later.
- Mac: Macs with M1 or later, and MacBook Neo with A18 Pro.
- Apple Vision Pro: supported.
- Apple Watch: Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
These are device eligibility requirements, not a guarantee that every feature works on each listed product. Apple says feature support varies by platform, language, and region. Its Apple Intelligence requirements and feature availability page, published September 14, 2026, is the current place to check a specific model and feature.

Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
Under Apple’s September 2026 requirements, supported iPhones include iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone Air, with an eligible operating system installed. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are not included in that list. An older phone may still run an iOS version that includes some non-AI features, but that does not make it eligible for Apple Intelligence.
Does my iPad or Mac support Apple Intelligence?
Apple lists iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPads with M1 or later, plus Macs with M1 or later and MacBook Neo with A18 Pro. Check the exact model and the current support page rather than relying only on a product family name: hardware generation matters. Apple also lists Apple Vision Pro and certain Apple Watch models, though Watch eligibility depends on pairing with an enabled iPhone.

Is Apple Intelligence available in my language and country?
Apple’s September 2026 support page lists English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. Availability can also differ by platform, region, and individual feature.
Apple says Apple Intelligence does not currently work on supported devices purchased in mainland China. It also does not currently work on supported devices purchased elsewhere when the user is in mainland China and the Apple Account country or region is also mainland China. Check Apple’s feature-level availability information for the current status of a particular tool or location.

How Apple says the system handles requests and privacy
Apple describes a hybrid architecture: many models run on the device, while more demanding requests can use larger models on Apple silicon servers through Private Cloud Compute. In its 2024 privacy announcement, Apple said server data would be used only to fulfill the request and not stored. Apple also said independent experts could inspect server code and that a device would communicate only with software publicly logged for inspection. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy claims; the cited materials do not establish an independent audit result.
For ChatGPT, Apple announced an optional integration that asks before sending a question or document. At launch, Apple said people could use ChatGPT without an account or connect an existing ChatGPT account; use with a connected account was governed by OpenAI’s data-use policies. Those details describe the 2024 announcement and should not be treated as confirmation of current settings or behavior.

Storage and usage limits
Apple’s current support page lists storage requirements that vary by device group: up to 8GB or 14GB, and up to 1.5GB for Apple Watch. The precise requirement depends on the supported device; consult the current page before freeing space or updating.
Apple says some server-based features have daily usage limits and that expanded access will be offered for a fee in the future. The cited information does not specify a price, start date, or subscription model.
Do you need AirPods?
No. AirPods are not a general requirement for Apple Intelligence. Apple identifies AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later only in connection with particular Live Translation features when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Feature availability still depends on the supported device, language, and region.
