Yes. Two flaws in Apple’s outbound iCloud Mail processing let an authenticated iCloud user make a message appear to come from an arbitrary @icloud.com address, without taking over that person’s account. Security consultant Timo Longin of SEC Consult says Apple’s final fixes were verified on December 9, 2025. The technical disclosure was published on October 1, 2026.

What the iCloud Mail flaws allowed

The flaws were in Apple’s outbound email pipeline: the systems that process messages sent through iCloud Mail. A person sending a crafted message from an authenticated iCloud account could cause its visible From: header to name another @icloud.com address. The apparent sender did not need to have their account compromised.

Email has more than one sender identity. The visible From: header is part of the message, while the SMTP envelope sender—set with MAIL FROM and often reflected in a delivered message’s Return-Path—is separate. Because mail applications commonly emphasize the visible From address, a mismatch can mislead a recipient about who sent a message.

SEC Consult described the issue as a form of “header smuggling”: different components interpreted crafted email data differently. The two reported techniques shared that underlying problem; they were not two ways to log in to a victim’s account or access a recipient’s mailbox.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How the two techniques differed

Technique Parsing discrepancy Effect
Carriage-return manipulation An initial parser ignored a malformed From: header during sender validation; a later component stripped or normalized the carriage-return characters and processed a different header. The message could pass the sender check and be processed with a forged visible From: address.
Dot-stuffing and dot-peeling After Apple changed the first behavior, SEC Consult reported inconsistent handling of SMTP dot-stuffing across parsers. Subsequent testing found interim changes had not fully stopped spoofing. A second parsing discrepancy again let the message pass sender validation and be interpreted differently downstream.

These are descriptions of the reported behavior, not instructions for crafting a spoofed message.

Why SPF, DKIM, and DMARC could still pass

SEC Consult demonstrated messages with a forged visible identity that passed SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. The message traveled through Apple’s legitimate sending infrastructure, and, according to the disclosure, DKIM signing occurred after the affected parsing stage. Because the visible From domain remained icloud.com, domain-alignment checks could also pass.

A pass result therefore did not establish that the person named in From: had authored the message. It showed that the message passed authentication checks as processed by the provider. This incident does not mean that every message passing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC is unsafe; it shows why authentication results alone could not rule out this specific provider-side parsing flaw.

What recipients and email investigators should check

A spoofed message could still leave clues in its full headers. When investigating suspicious mail, compare the visible From: address with Return-Path and review the authentication results and other delivery information. A mismatch can be a useful signal, though a header check by itself is not a substitute for evaluating the message and its context.

  • Be cautious with unexpected requests for passwords, payments, or urgent action, even if the sender’s name looks familiar or authentication indicators say “pass.”
  • Verify sensitive requests through a separate, previously known contact method—not by replying to the suspicious message or using contact details it supplies.
  • For organizational investigations, preserve and examine the complete message headers rather than relying only on the From address shown in the mail app.

What is not established

The reviewed incident reports do not establish confirmed attacks in the wild, a count of affected users, or the prevalence of the flaw. They document a demonstrated spoofing weakness in Apple’s outbound processing and the researcher’s verification of remediation; they do not show that attackers could access victims’ accounts or read their mailboxes.
