Choose based on the devices you already use
Apple Home suits an Apple-centered household
Apple presents the Home app as a way to control accessories across Apple devices. If your household already uses Apple devices and you want to manage smart-home accessories within that environment, Apple Home is the natural starting point. For away-from-home access and automations, Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs. Confirm that the specific hub and accessory meet your needs before relying on a feature.
Google Home is a practical option for Android and mixed-device homes
Google’s Matter setup instructions cover both Android and iPhone/iPad, and its compatibility information includes Google products, partner devices, and Matter accessories. That makes Google Home worth considering when household members use different phone platforms or when the planned device is already listed as compatible. Phone compatibility alone does not establish that every smart-home feature works equally across platforms.
What Matter does—and what it does not
Matter is an interoperability standard: a compatible Matter accessory can be controlled through multiple certified smart-home apps. Google specifically says a device can be controlled simultaneously through apps such as Google Home and Apple Home. That does not mean every Matter product, category, setup process, or accessory feature is supported identically in both ecosystems. Platform support for device categories changes on different timelines.

Before choosing an accessory, check its exact model and the functions you care about—such as automations or category-specific controls—in the intended app. Apple’s published Works with Apple Home categories include air purifiers, blinds and shades, bridges, fans, lights, locks, outlets, robot vacuums, sensors, switches, and thermostats, subject to certification and interoperability testing. Google lists Matter categories including lighting and electrical, HVAC and climate, safety and security, and window coverings. Those category lists are guides, not guarantees for every model or feature. See Apple’s accessory information and Google’s compatibility information.
Do you need a hub?
Apple Home
Apple names HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs. Apple says a home hub enables remote access and automations. Check the current requirements for the hub and accessory you intend to use: “Matter-compatible” does not by itself answer whether a particular connection type or feature is supported.

Google Home
Google requires a Matter-enabled hub to add Matter accessories, control them locally, and control them remotely while away. Supported hub types include speakers, displays, Wi-Fi routers, and streamers. A Thread accessory additionally needs a hub with a built-in Thread border router; a hub that supports only the wrong connection type will not meet that requirement. Google’s setup guide lists its current examples and requirements.
Check your network before buying Matter devices
For Google’s Matter setup, the home Wi-Fi network must have IPv6 enabled. The hub must also match the accessory’s connection: Google explains that Wi-Fi and Thread devices have different requirements. Thread devices need a compatible Thread border router. These details can determine whether setup works, so check the router, hub, and specific device rather than relying only on a Matter logo.

Apple says Home accessories are controlled by Apple devices instead of the cloud and that communication is end-to-end encrypted. Google says Matter commands can travel locally over the home network rather than through Google or a manufacturer’s cloud. It contrasts this with some non-Matter Works with Google Home integrations, where commands may pass through Nest cloud services and a partner’s cloud. This describes the documented paths for those setups; it is not a blanket privacy assessment of every integration. Check the current terms for the particular services and accessories you will connect. Google explains the distinction in its Matter overview.
