Yes—police forensic tools could recover some deleted or disappearing-message previews from an iPhone’s local notification database. Apple says it fixed the retention flaw in iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2, released April 22, 2026, and backported the fix to older supported versions. Update your device and review whether message previews appear on its lock screen.
How deleted message previews could remain on an iPhone
Deleting a message in an app or setting it to disappear does not necessarily remove a notification preview already retained elsewhere on the device. In the reported case, FBI forensic tools recovered previews of Signal messages from an iPhone’s local notification database. The messages had been deleted or configured to disappear, and Signal had reportedly been removed from the phone.

The issue involved notifications that exposed message text to the operating system. It was a local-device retention problem: a preview could persist in the notification database even after the underlying message or app was gone. Apple described the impact as: “Notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device.”
Which update fixes the notification-retention flaw?
Apple identifies the vulnerability as CVE-2026-28950. The company says it addressed a Notification Services logging issue with improved data redaction. The main release containing the fix is iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2, released April 22, 2026. Apple also issued the fix for older supported software branches.

Apple’s security bulletin lists iPhone 11 and later and specified iPad generations for the 26.4.2 release. The applicable update depends on your device and software branch; install the latest security update Apple offers for that device. See Apple’s security releases for release information.
How to reduce notification-preview exposure
- Install the applicable security update. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available update for your device.
- Review notification previews. Open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose when previews should appear, or choose Never if you do not want message text displayed in notification previews.
- Check sensitive messaging apps individually. In Settings > Notifications, select an app and review its alert and preview options. App notification controls can affect what text is exposed to the operating system and shown on the lock screen.
Turning off previews can reduce the amount of message text displayed, but it is not a substitute for installing the operating-system fix. The incident demonstrates that app deletion or disappearing-message settings alone did not guarantee removal of notification data already retained on the device.

Does this mean Apple gave police access to its servers?
No. The reported extraction came from a seized iPhone’s locally retained notification database; it is not evidence of direct access to Apple servers. Apple’s government-request page says, “We have also never allowed any government direct access to Apple servers. And we never will.” Device-level forensic access and server access are distinct issues.
