If your iPhone or iPad has not updated, open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest security update offered for that device. Apple says the DarkSword-related fixes first shipped in 2025, so this was an expansion of availability—not the first patch.
What changed on April 1?
Apple released iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 on March 24, 2026. On April 1, Apple enabled the update for more devices. Its security advisory says users with Automatic Updates enabled could receive the expanded protections automatically.
The distinction matters: April 1 was a wider availability date, not the date DarkSword was first addressed. Apple says the associated fixes first shipped in 2025. Contemporary reporting described the expansion to additional devices as an unusual backport or availability choice; that is a characterization by reporters, not a policy rationale Apple stated.
What is DarkSword, and why does the update matter?
Apple describes the update as providing safeguards against web attacks called DarkSword. Lookout’s March 18, 2026 analysis characterized DarkSword as a full iOS exploit chain and infostealer targeting iOS 18.4 through 18.6.2. According to Lookout, the attack used a hit-and-run approach to steal sensitive information quickly, including credentials and cryptocurrency wallet data.

Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) reported observing multiple commercial surveillance vendors and suspected state-sponsored actors using DarkSword in separate campaigns since at least November 2025. GTIG described targets in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Malaysia, and Ukraine. “Suspected state-sponsored” is not a definitive attribution of those campaigns to a government.
Does your iPhone or iPad get the update?
Apple’s iOS 18.7.7 release listing includes iPhone XR, XS and XS Max; iPhone 11; iPhone SE (2nd generation); iPhone 12 and 13; iPhone SE (3rd generation); and iPhone 14, 15, 16, and 16e models. The listing also covers iPad mini, iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Pro families, but the exact generations, chips, or sizes matter. For example, Apple’s listed names include iPad mini (5th generation – A17 Pro) and iPad (7th generation – A16); do not infer that every model in a seemingly continuous range is included.
Check the exact model against Apple’s iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 security release listing, or use the update screen on the device. The update screen is the practical check for what Apple currently offers that particular device.

Do you have to upgrade to iOS 26?
No. The point of the expanded iOS 18.7.7 availability is that eligible devices remaining on iOS 18 can receive the update without first moving to a newer major iOS version. This does not establish that every older device can install iOS 18.7.7, or that all devices have identical update choices. Follow the newest security release offered for your exact device.
How to protect your iPhone or iPad from DarkSword
- Check for the offered update: open Settings > General > Software Update on an iPhone or iPad. Review the version shown for your device.
- Install the latest security update offered: follow the on-screen prompts. If 18.7.7 is offered while the device remains on iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, install it; if a newer security update is offered, install that instead.
- Keep Automatic Updates enabled if it fits your preferences: Apple says the expanded availability could deliver automatically to users who had Automatic Updates turned on. You can check the Automatic Updates controls from Settings > General > Software Update.
MacRumors reported that devices on older iOS 18 versions could also receive a critical-security alert. If an alert appears, review it and use Software Update to apply the available release.

What should organizations do?
Organizations managing company iPhones and iPads should incorporate prompt installation of the latest offered security release into their fleet update process, while checking model eligibility and deployment status. Lookout recommends updating supported devices. It also describes Safe Browsing and Device Compromise Detection as protections for its customers; those are optional organizational layers, not substitutes for Apple’s software update.
The established remedy in Apple’s advisory is installing the applicable software update. An antivirus app, VPN, case, or other purchase is not a replacement for that update.
