Apple discontinued macOS Server on 21 April 2022. Existing customers could continue downloading and using it with macOS Monterey, but Apple does not establish compatibility with newer macOS releases. Profile Manager has also passed key push-notification deadlines, so administrators should plan a migration instead of treating the app as a supported platform.

When did Apple discontinue macOS Server?

Apple’s support page says macOS Server was discontinued on 21 April 2022. The last version reported by MacRumors and Macworld was 5.12.2. Macworld dates the product’s beginnings to 1999, meaning it lasted more than two decades.

Apple said existing customers could continue to download and use the app with macOS Monterey. That is the stated compatibility boundary; Apple’s statement does not promise that macOS Server will work on later macOS versions. See Apple’s macOS Server support page, MacRumors’ report, and Macworld’s report.

What changed when the app was discontinued?

macOS Server had already lost individual services over time. By the 2022 discontinuation, Apple said that its popular Caching Server, File Sharing Server, and Time Machine Server features were included with macOS High Sierra and later. Those services do not require the discontinued Server app.

Apple 2020 Mac Mini with Apple M1 Chip, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD Storage - Silver (Renewed)
  • Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
  • 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
  • 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
  • 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
  • 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid

The app’s remaining management role centered on Profile Manager and Open Directory. Apple’s support page lists services removed in earlier versions and their alternatives, so the right replacement depends on which specific workload an organization still runs.

Is Profile Manager still usable?

Profile Manager’s push-notification capabilities have expired on Apple’s published schedule: it could no longer create or renew push-notification certificates after 29 October 2024, and it could no longer send push notifications after 14 April 2025. Apple directs administrators to choose another mobile device management (MDM) solution and provides migration planning guidance on its support page.

Because push notifications are central to ongoing device management, organizations still relying on Profile Manager should treat migration as necessary, not as a future compatibility experiment. Use Apple’s migration guidance to plan the transition and select an MDM platform appropriate to your devices, policies, and administrative needs.

What should replace each macOS Server workload?

There is no single replacement for every Server feature. Map each active service separately, then compare options for operating-system compatibility, administration effort, security-update responsibility, scale, and total cost.

Workload Replacement or status
MDM and Profile Manager Another MDM solution; Apple recommends migrating to one.
File sharing File Server functionality built into macOS. A dedicated NAS is another architecture option for larger deployments, but it is not an Apple-endorsed replacement.
Time Machine Time Machine service in macOS; a NAS may also be considered as part of a backup architecture.
Caching Caching service in macOS.
FTP SFTP/SSH.
DNS BIND, Unbound, or KnotDNS.
VPN OpenVPN, SoftEther, or WireGuard.
Websites Apache HTTP Server, Nginx, or Lighttpd.
DHCP bootpd built into macOS.
Mail Dovecot/PostfixCourier, Kerio Connect, or another mail platform.

These service alternatives are listed in Apple’s macOS Server service-status documentation. The best fit depends on whether you need device management, file and backup services, or network and web infrastructure; an MDM product will not replace those other roles.

How to plan a migration

  1. Inventory what the Server app actually does. Record each enabled service, the devices or users that depend on it, and any workflows tied to it.
  2. Separate the workloads. Treat MDM, file sharing, backups, caching, DNS, VPN, web hosting, DHCP, and mail as distinct requirements rather than searching for one all-in-one successor.
  3. Choose a replacement for each requirement. For Profile Manager, follow Apple’s MDM migration guidance. For other services, use the alternatives in Apple’s service-status documentation as starting points and assess compatibility, scale, administration, security maintenance, and cost.
  4. Test before switching users or devices. Validate the replacement with representative clients and workflows, then schedule the transition so you can identify and resolve problems before retiring the old setup.
