There is no blanket Apple schedule showing that named devices will lose all support in 2026. “Losing support” can mean a device cannot install the newest major operating system, no longer receives security updates, is no longer eligible for hardware service, or cannot run a particular app. Those are separate questions. Apple’s published compatibility information sets the current major-OS cutoffs; its security-release list shows updates for particular older OS versions and device groups.
What Apple devices can run the current major operating systems?
Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report says iOS 26 compatibility extends back to iPhone 11 (2019), iPadOS 26 to iPad (8th generation, 2020), and macOS Tahoe to MacBook models from 2019. These are compatibility cutoffs for those releases—not promises that the devices will support future major versions.
| Operating system | Oldest compatibility identified by Apple | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 26 | iPhone 11 (2019) | Models older than iPhone 11 are outside the stated iOS 26 compatibility range. |
| iPadOS 26 | iPad (8th generation, 2020) | Models older than the 8th-generation iPad are outside the stated iPadOS 26 compatibility range. |
| macOS Tahoe | MacBook models from 2019 | Use Apple’s model-by-model list; a year or product-family name alone may not establish compatibility. |
For Macs, check the exact model against Apple’s macOS Tahoe compatibility list. It distinguishes configurations that can sound nearly identical: for example, the list includes MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) and MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports), as well as MacBook Air (M1, 2020). A purchase year or the label “MacBook Pro” is not precise enough to confirm eligibility.
Does an older device still get security updates?
Not being eligible for the newest major OS does not, by itself, prove that a device has stopped receiving security updates. Apple sometimes publishes updates for older OS branches. Its security-release listing includes iOS 18.7.10 and iPadOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and iPad (7th generation), alongside iOS 26.6.2 and iPadOS 26.6.2 for newer listed device families.

Those entries are dated, version-specific examples—not a guarantee that every older device or OS branch will continue to receive updates. Check Apple’s live security releases list for the installed OS version and the device group named in the entry. The list changes over time, so a past update is not evidence of ongoing coverage today.
How to check your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
- Identify the exact device model. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > About and note the model information. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. For a Mac compatibility check, compare the precise model and configuration with Apple’s Tahoe list.
- Check major-OS eligibility. Compare the identified model with Apple’s current compatibility information. The 2026 Environmental Progress Report gives the broad starting points—iPhone 11, iPad (8th generation), and MacBook models from 2019—but the Mac list is model-specific.
- Check security releases separately. Open Apple’s security releases page and look for the installed OS branch, release date, and supported device group. Do not infer that a device is unsupported merely because it cannot install the newest major OS.
- Check the support question that matters to you. Hardware service classification and whether a particular app or feature works are separate from OS compatibility and security updates. The compatibility and release lists do not settle those questions; verify them independently for the device and service you need.
What the adoption figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report says that by February 2026, more than 74 percent of iPhone devices introduced in the previous four years had updated to iOS 26, and over 66 percent of iPad devices introduced in that period had updated to iPadOS 26. These figures describe adoption among devices introduced in that four-year window; they do not establish the support status of an individual older device.

Availability and options depend on location and eligibility. These are possible end-of-life routes, not a recommendation to replace a device that still meets your needs.
