Which one is better for navigation?
Choose by the apps you already use
CarPlay supports Apple Maps and compatible third-party navigation apps, including Google Maps and Waze. Apple says compatible third-party navigation apps can also appear on the CarPlay Dashboard. That gives iPhone users more than one navigation option, but availability depends on the app, region, vehicle, and software version. Apple’s CarPlay page describes the supported experience.
Google’s Android Auto materials establish that the system supports navigation and directions, but do not provide a directly comparable, exhaustive app list. Confirm that your preferred navigation app works with Android Auto where you live and on your vehicle’s display. The available product information does not establish that either platform has categorically better routes or greater navigation accuracy.
What matters in the car
For either system, consider whether you can see the map clearly on your display and control it using the vehicle’s screen, steering-wheel buttons, or voice features. Those details depend on the vehicle and its equipment; official product descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison of ease of use or reliability.

Which one is better for music and other audio?
Both systems provide access to compatible audio apps through the car. CarPlay includes Apple Music and other audio apps. Android Auto supports compatible media apps for music and podcasts through the car speakers; some services may require a subscription or premium account. Google’s media help page explains its app-based approach.
These capabilities do not establish a winner for music. Check that the service you use supports the relevant in-car system, and account for any subscription or premium-account requirement. The cited product guidance does not compare music catalogs, sound quality, or usability.

Phone projection requires support from both the phone and the particular car or stereo. A USB port alone does not show that a vehicle supports Android Auto or CarPlay. Verify the exact make, model year, factory stereo or head unit, phone model and operating system, and the wired or wireless mode you intend to use.

- Check the vehicle: Look up your exact make, model year, and stereo in the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information. Confirm whether it supports CarPlay, Android Auto, or both, and whether support is wired, wireless, or both.
- Check the phone: Confirm that your iPhone or Android phone and operating system meet the current requirements for the intended system. Google’s getting-started material specifies Android 9.0 or later and an active data plan, but requirements can vary by configuration and change; check the current guidance for your region and device. Google’s getting-started page lists setup information.
- Check the apps: Confirm that your preferred map, audio service, and messaging app support the system in your region. Check account or subscription requirements for audio services.
- Choose the connection: CarPlay can connect by USB or wirelessly when the vehicle supports it; wireless setup requires appropriate vehicle support and Wi-Fi settings. Apple’s instructions describe its setup. Android Auto can connect by USB, or wirelessly with compatible hardware; wireless setup involves initial Bluetooth pairing, with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services recommended during setup. Google’s setup guide gives the connection steps.
- Check the controls: Confirm how the system works with your display and steering-wheel controls, and whether the features you want are available on that specific vehicle.
For wired Android Auto, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable. For either platform, check the vehicle’s connection instructions and make sure the cable’s connector and data capability match your devices.
If your car does not support the system
An aftermarket head unit may add CarPlay or Android Auto in supported configurations. Apple says its system can be added to a current car using an aftermarket system and reports more than 800 compatible vehicle models; that is Apple’s count, with no year stated on the reviewed page, and it is not an independently verified count of compatible model years or a comparison with Android Auto. Google also says Android Auto can be used with an aftermarket unit. Apple and Google describe these options.

Quick Recap
How to decide
- You use an iPhone: Check CarPlay support in your exact vehicle first; then confirm your preferred navigation, audio, and messaging apps.
- You use an Android phone: Check Android Auto support in your exact vehicle and verify your preferred apps and connection mode.
- You are choosing a vehicle or stereo: Compare the phone support you need, the exact navigation and media apps, voice messaging behavior, and whether the system works wired or wirelessly. Neither platform has an established universal advantage for routing, audio quality, reliability, or ease of use.
