Apple’s 50-year journey began with a partnership formed in 1976 and grew through a sequence of personal-computing products, mobile devices and services built around a large installed base. The “$3.5 trillion” figure belongs to anniversary-period reporting in 2026—not a live valuation—and the company’s founding date is distinct from its later incorporation.

Apple’s start: a 1976 founding and a 1977 incorporation

Apple dates its founding to April 1, 1976. The Associated Press describes the venture as a partnership among Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne, with early work connected to Jobs’s parents’ home in Los Altos. “Garage startup” is a familiar shorthand, but it should not be taken to mean that every early company activity happened in a garage. Apple’s anniversary account and the AP’s history of the company describe the founding and early story.

Apple Investor Relations lists January 3, 1977, as the date Apple was incorporated in California. That is a separate legal milestone, not a replacement for the 1976 founding date. Apple’s investor FAQ distinguishes the dates.

Apple II turned the venture into a product company

The Apple II, released in June 1977, was an early commercial milestone. The AP reports a launch price of $1,298. Its importance to Apple’s story is the move from an initial partnership to a personal computer that could be sold as a product, giving the young company a platform for further growth. The price is the reported launch figure; it is not adjusted here for inflation. AP’s anniversary report provides the date and price.

Macintosh made the interface part of the story

On January 24, 1984, Apple unveiled the first Macintosh. The AP describes its public introduction of a mouse and graphical interface as a notable shift in how people interacted with a computer: users could point and select on screen rather than rely solely on typed commands. This was a defining moment in Apple’s product history, not evidence that Macintosh was the first computer ever to use a graphical interface. The AP timeline dates the unveiling.

Jobs’s departure and return were major turning points

The AP reports that Jobs resigned in 1985 after a power struggle and returned to Apple in 1997. Those events mark a rupture and a return in the company’s leadership history, but the timeline alone does not prove that they caused Apple’s later growth. The company’s subsequent product milestones included the iPod, iPhone and iPad, each extending Apple’s reach beyond the personal computer. AP’s anniversary report covers the leadership dates and product sequence.

The IPO established a public-market milestone

Apple went public on December 12, 1980, at an offering price of $22 per share. Apple says five subsequent stock splits make that price equivalent to $0.10 on a split-adjusted basis. The adjusted amount compares share prices across the splits; it is not a total-return figure and does not include dividends or account for the timing of an investment. Apple Investor Relations provides the IPO and split information.

Apple expanded from devices into an ecosystem

Apple’s portfolio now reaches well beyond the computer. Its anniversary statement names the Mac, iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro alongside services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud and Apple TV. The company presents its approach as combining technology and the liberal arts; that is Apple’s stated philosophy, not independent proof of why it succeeded. In the same announcement, CEO Tim Cook said, “Thinking different has always been at the heart of Apple.” Apple’s 50th-anniversary announcement lists the milestones and describes its philosophy.

Reuters’ anniversary-period analysis describes services as a growth driver connected to Apple’s installed base of devices. That relationship helps explain the shift in the business: hardware brings customers into the ecosystem, while services add ongoing offerings around those devices. It is reported analysis, not a guarantee that services growth will continue at any particular pace. Reuters’ report via Investing.com discusses services and Apple’s next chapter.

What the $3.5 trillion figure means in 2026

The Los Angeles Times reported Apple’s market value above $3.5 trillion in coverage published around the company’s 50th anniversary in March 2026. It also described Apple as the world’s second-largest company after Nvidia at that time. Market capitalization and rankings move with share prices, so those figures describe the anniversary period—not Apple’s value or rank today.

The same Los Angeles Times report cited $416 billion in revenue and $112 billion in net income for the fiscal year ending in September, and more than 2.5 billion active devices. These are figures reported in that 2026 anniversary coverage, not current-period updates. Revenue, net income and market capitalization are different measures: the first two describe a fiscal-year operating period, while market capitalization is a share-price-based valuation at a point in time. The Los Angeles Times anniversary article supplies the period and figures.

Apple’s next challenge: competing in AI

Reuters frames Apple’s next chapter around both services growth and competition over AI capabilities. That is a strategic challenge discussed in anniversary-period reporting, not a settled outcome: the evidence cited here does not establish how successfully Apple will compete or what its future valuation will be. Reuters’ analysis sets out that context.
