Apple’s AirPods speech-translation feature is no longer just a reported plan: Live Translation is an official feature. It can translate an in-person conversation through compatible AirPods, but the earbuds do not work independently. You also need a supported iPhone, current software, Apple Intelligence, and downloaded language models.
What happened to the reported AirPods translation feature?
In August 2025, 9to5Mac reported that an iOS 26 beta asset hinted at an AirPods gesture associated with Translate. That was a report about a possible feature, not confirmation of how it worked or which devices would support it. Apple announced Live Translation the following month, and its September 15, 2026 support document now explains the current AirPods compatibility and setup requirements.

Apple’s initial announcement described English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with more languages planned. The feature later expanded to the EU, and Apple’s current support page lists a broader set of languages.
Which AirPods support Live Translation?
Apple’s support document, published September 15, 2026, names these compatible models:

Compatibility with AirPods is only one part of the requirement. Apple says you also need an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, the Translate app, the latest AirPods firmware, and downloaded models for both languages. Check Apple’s AirPods Live Translation support instructions for the current setup guidance.
What do you need before starting?
- A supported AirPods model paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
- iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence enabled on the iPhone.
- The Translate app and the latest firmware for the AirPods.
- Downloaded language models for both languages in the conversation.
The iPhone handles the translation processing. The AirPods provide a way to hear the translated speech; they are not a standalone translator. Apple says the downloaded language models are processed on the iPhone and that conversation data stays private there. That is Apple’s description of the feature, not an independent privacy audit.

How to start an in-person translated conversation
- In the Translate app, open the Live tab and download the language spoken by the other person and the language you want to hear.
- Select those two languages for the conversation.
- Start Live Translation from the Live tab, ask Siri, use the iPhone Action button if it is configured for Translate, or use a supported AirPods gesture.
- Listen to the other person’s translated speech through your AirPods. You can show them a transcript in their language or play the translated response through the iPhone speaker.
In a noisy setting, Apple says moving the iPhone closer to the speaker can let the phone’s microphones help pick up speech. Apple does not publish a numerical translation-accuracy, latency, or noisy-environment performance result in the cited materials.
When both people have compatible AirPods
If both participants have compatible AirPods and each starts Live Translation, Apple describes each person listening to the other’s translated response through their own AirPods. For a conversation with someone without compatible earbuds, the iPhone can show or play the translated response instead.

Which languages does AirPods Live Translation support?
Apple’s current support page lists English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, simplified Chinese (Mandarin), traditional Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, and Korean. You need to download both languages before starting. Apple cautions that language and regional availability may vary, so check the Translate app and Apple’s current support information for availability where you are.

No. Apple also connects Live Translation with Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, but those experiences may have different requirements and language availability. Do not assume that a language or device combination supported for an in-person AirPods conversation automatically works the same way in a call or message. Apple’s announcements describe the feature’s rollout and scope in its September 2025 Apple Intelligence announcement and its November 2025 EU expansion announcement.

What are the limitations?
Apple warns: “Live Translation uses generative models, and outputs may be inaccurate, unexpected or offensive. Check important information for accuracy.” Treat the translation as assistance, not a substitute for confirming medical, legal, financial, or other consequential information with a qualified person.
Apple’s support page also notes that availability can vary by region and language. The cited materials do not establish that one compatible AirPods model translates more accurately or faster than another.
